I'm Virginia Allen, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Monday, March 11th.
Here are today's headlines.
The House of Representatives is expected to vote on Wednesday on bipartisan legislation relating to the Chinese-owned app TikTok.
Wisconsin Republican Representative Mike Gallagher and Democratic Illinois Representative Rajna Krishnamorthy introduced the protecting Americans from Foreign Adversaries Controlled Applications Act.
that's a mouthful on March 5th is when they introduced that piece of legislation.
The legislation, according to its text,
aims to protect the national security of the United States from the threat
posed by foreign adversary controlled applications such as TikTok
and any successor applications or services
and any other application or service developed or provided by Bight Dance
or an entity under the control of Bight Dance.
But TikTok does not appear pleased with this legislation and says it's a violation of the First Amendment.
TikTok said in a statement that this bill is an outright ban of TikTok, no matter how much the authors try to disguise it.
And TikTok added that the legislation will trample the First Amendment rights of 170 million Americans and deprive 5 million small businesses of a platform they rely on to grow and create jobs.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee voted unanimously to advance the legislation last Thursday.
President Joe Biden expressed his support for the legislation on Friday when he told reporters,
if they pass it, referring to Congress, I'll sign it.
We will keep you updated on the vote which is expected to happen on Wednesday, so stay tuned.
The war between Israel and Hamas rages on.
The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that,
his forces would move forward with invading Rafa. Rafa is a city on the Gaza Strip
southern border and Hamas fighters are believed to still be in that city. Netanyahu's comments
come after President Joe Biden told MSNBC in an exclusive interview that Israel entering into
Rafa is a red line. Biden, however, followed up by saying, but I am never going to leave
Israel. Take a listen to this exchange via MSNBC's YouTube.
What is your red line with Prime Minister Netanyahu? Do you have a red line? For instance,
would invasion of Rafah, would you have urged him not to do? Would that be a red line?
It is a red line, but I'm never going to leave Israel. The defense of Israel is still critical.
So there's no red line, I'm going to cut off all weapons so they don't have the iron dome to protect
them. They don't have. But there's red line.
that if it crosses in the country,
cannot have 30,000 more Palestinians dead
as a consequence of going after.
There's other ways to deal, to get to,
to deal with the trauma caused by Hamas.
It's like I, well, look, the first time I went over,
I sat with them and I sat with a war cabin.
I said, look, don't make the mistake America made.
America made a mistake.
We went after bin Laden until we got him.
But we shouldn't have gone into Ukraine.
I mean, we shouldn't have.
shouldn't have got into the whole thing in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Wasn't necessary.
It wasn't necessary.
It just caused more problems than the race than it's been cured.
The German-based outlet Axel Springer, which is the parent company of Politico, asked Netanyahu about invading Ratha.
Well, Netanyahu replied, we'll go there.
We're not going to leave them.
You know I have a red line.
You know what the red line is?
that October 7th doesn't happen again, never happens again.
We will keep you updated should Israel move forward with its invasion of Rafa.
In other world-related news, Pope Francis is facing backlash after suggesting Ukraine should negotiate with Russia.
During an interview with a Switzerland-based broadcaster, RSI, Pope Francis said,
I think that the strongest one is the one who looks at the situation, thinks about the people,
and has the courage of the white flag, and negotiates.
Ukrainian foreign minister, Dmitro Kuleva, weighed in on Pope Francis's remarks,
saying, in an ex post on Sunday, that our flag is a yellow and blue one,
this is the flag by which we live, die, and prevail.
We shall never raise any other flags.
Kuleba added, we thank His Holiness Pope Francis for his constant prayers for peace,
and we continue to hope that after two years of devastating war in the heart of Europe,
the pontiff will find the opportunity to pay an apostolic visit to Ukraine to support
over a million Ukrainian Catholics, over 5 million Greek Catholics, all Christians, and all Ukrainians.
On Sunday evening, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said,
in his nightly address that Russian murders and torturers are unable to march farther into Europe
only because they are being held back by Ukrainians holding arms under the blue and yellow flag.
Zelensky went on to say there used to be many white walls of houses and churches in Ukraine,
but they have now been scorched and ruined by Russian shells.
This speaks volumes about who needs to stop for the war.
to end. Polish foreign minister Rados-Lasikorski similarly weighed in on Pope Francis's remarks
saying on X, how about for balance encouraging Putin to have the courage to withhold his army
from Ukraine? Peace would immediately ensure without the need for negotiations.
New York City firefighters booed New York Attorney General Letitia James at an event last week.
Now the Fire Department has issued a memo to the firefighters pertaining to that incident.
According to the New York Post, the memo said,
When you're not on duty, feel however you want about politicians.
Vote, protest, that's your right.
But don't do it on the job's time, on other members' time, or on their family's time.
Do it on your own time.
The New York Post reported that the controversy stemmed from a department's
ceremony Thursday at the Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn, where the crowd, including
the families of captains, battalion chiefs, and civilians up for promotion erupted in loud
jeers as James walked to the podium. Let's take a listen to some of that audio from the Thursday
event via the New York Post YouTube. I'd like to introduce our next speaker, Attorney General
Lettisa James. Oh, come on. We're in our house of God.
First, simmer down.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you for getting it out of your system.
I want to thank Commissioner Kavanaugh and Chief Hodgins for that recognition.
And today's, today we are making history,
swearing in our first African-American woman chaplain of FDNY.
Prior to the issuing of the memo, the New York Post had reported on Saturday that the fire department's chief, John Hogan's sent an email to other agency heads.
The Department's Bureau of Investigation and Trials is investigating this so they will figure out who the members are.
Hodgins also wrote, according to the post, that I recommend they come forward.
I have been told by the commissioner, it will be better for them.
if they come forward and we don't have to hunt them down.
Now, as far as James, you'll remember that she just won a multi-million dollar case in New York
against former President Donald Trump.
The case revolved around Trump allegedly inflating the value of his real estate holdings in New York.
The judge has ordered Trump to pay over $450 million in that case.
And as we wrap up the show this Monday, in case you missed it, the Oscars were held late last night.
And during his acceptance speech, Zone of Interest Director Jonathan Glazer commented on the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.
Here's what he had to say in his speech.
Thank you so much. I'm going to read. I'm afraid.
Thank you to the Academy for this honor and to our partners, A24, Film 4 Access and the Polish Film Institute to the Auschwitz Berkenau,
and State Museum for their trust and guidance to my producers, actors, collaborators.
All our choices were made to reflect and confront us in the present.
Not to say, look what they did then, rather look what we do now.
Our film shows where dehumanization leads at its worst.
It shaped all of our past and present.
Right now, we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness
and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation
which has led to conflict for so many innocent people.
Whether the victims of October the 7th in Israel
or the ongoing attack on Gaza,
all the victims of this dehumanization,
how do we resist?
Alexandra, Abistron Kolaadze H. Check, the girl who glows in the film as she did in life, chose to.
I dedicate this to her memory and her resistance.
Thank you.
Our colleague Tyler O'Neill reported on the comments, and he said that Glazer is not saying he refuted his Jewishness full stop.
I think his comment is shocking for what it does say, however, namely that Israel's actions are beyond the pale for some.
Jewish people like himself. Heritage Foundation research fellow Jason Bedrick also commented on
Glazer's remarks saying in a post on X, what an absolute clown, a moral midget preening like a peacock.
Well, with that, that seems like a good place to leave it for today's show. Thanks so much for being
