Today marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, and President Joe Biden is in Normandy to commemorate the event.
I'm Virginia Allen, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Thursday, June 6th.
80 years ago today on June 6th, 1944, the Allied forces stormed the beaches at Normandy, France.
It marked a huge turning point in the war.
On that day, 150,000 soldiers from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada stormed the beaches of Normandy.
On D-Day itself, over 4,400 allied troops were killed, including more than 2,500 Americans.
Fox News reported today that the National World War II Museum in New Orleans is preserving the stories of those veterans who served in World War II and who landed on the beaches of Normandy 80 years ago through AI technology.
18 World War II veterans were interviewed by the museum and their responses are part of an interactive exhibit.
that allows museum goers to ask the veterans questions, and then AI technology brings up the best
answer that matches the question. The museum's Vice President of Education and Access, Peter Crean,
explain the significance of the exhibit.
A hundred years from now that someone's grandchildren or great-grandchildren will be able to come
here and actually have a conversation with a World War II veteran. That's going to the source.
And it's becoming, of course, ever so much more important as we are, as that generation's beginning to fade from history.
On this momentous day, President Joe Biden was in Normandy, France, to deliver remarks on the 80th anniversary per Fox News.
We're not far off from the time from the last living voices.
Those who fought and bled on D-Day will no longer be with us.
So we have a special obligation.
We cannot let what happened here be lost in the silence of the years to come.
We must remember it, must honor it and live it.
We must remember the fact that they were heroes here that day
does not absolve us from what we have to do today.
Democracy is never guaranteed.
Every generation must preserve it, defend it, and fight for it.
And here at the Daily Signal, we want to take a minute to say thank you.
to all who served our nation during World War II.
I'm thinking today about my grandfather, Frank Horner,
who served in the Navy during World War II,
and like my grandfather, so many who served in World War II have passed on,
but we're forever in the debt to those soldiers and those families who served.
Thank you.
Illegal aliens are registering to vote in the United States.
This is according to a daily signal report by the manager
of the Heritage Foundation's election law reform initiative,
Hans von Spakovsky, and president of the Public Interest Legal Foundation, Christian Adams.
According to their report, one list shows that 19 aliens from Italy, Mexico, the Dominican Republic,
El Salvador, Haiti, the Philippines, Panama, South Korea, Poland, Guatemala, Nigeria, and Canada,
all were prosecuted and convicted in North Carolina for illegally voting in multiple state elections.
Somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000, illegal aliens were registered to vote by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation within the past 20 years.
Von Spakovsky and Adams write that this isn't a rumor. This is an admission by Pennsylvania election officials in litigation.
An illegal alien in Pennsylvania named Conroy is a great example. He registered as a Democrat on October 8, 2008, and later voted.
Conroy later wrote to election officials asking to be removed.
from voter rolls, saying that he didn't know he had to be a U.S. citizen to vote.
And it's not just in Pennsylvania, as Hans von Zikovsky and Adams say, this is happening across
the country and in states and cities like California, New Jersey, and Chicago.
The men testified before the House Administration Committee sharing this information,
but they said that Democrats did not seem to want to hear it.
You can read the full report by Hans von Swikovsky and Adams in today's show notes.
President Joe Biden says he has known Russian President Vladimir Putin for over 40 years.
He made the comments during an interview with ABC News. Take a listen.
I've known him for over 40 years. He's concerned me for 40 years. He's not a decent man. He's a dictator.
And he's struggling to make sure he holds this country together.
The issue, as the New York Post reports, is that there's no way Biden could have known Putin for over 40 years.
because Putin was working undercover as a KGB intelligence officer through the 1980s.
Putin did not become a public figure until 1999, 25 years ago.
The New York Post reports that Putin and Biden did meet while Biden was serving as vice president
and then half of course met again while Biden is president.
The governor of California is proposing cutting the public safety budget as the state is struggling
with a very large deficit.
This is according to reporting from Fox News.
The outlet reports that Governor Gavin Newsom has proposed a budget that makes difficult decisions that are necessary to address an estimated $27.6 billion deficit.
So what difficult decisions is Newsom talking about here?
His budget proposal includes a $97 million cut to trial court operations,
10 million to the Department of Justice's Division of Law Enforcement,
and more than $80 million to the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, according to Fox.
A News spokesperson told Fox News Digital that the budget proposes numerous ways to make government more efficient
and reduce costs for taxpayers, including cuts to inmate spending.
Since Governor Newsom took office in 2019, according to the spokesperson, the state has made record
investment in law enforcement, including $1.1 billion to tackle crime, support police,
and hold criminals accountable. But California's Department of Finance did acknowledge a 1.6% reduction
in the state's Department of Justice's overall proposed budget, according to Fox.
We're still learning more about the COVID-19 vaccine, but a new report indicates a troubling
trend of increased mortality rates after the widespread distribution of the vaccine.
BMJ Public Health is an open access and peer-reviewed journal.
They just released a 12-page report titled excess mortality across countries in the Western
world since the COVID-19 pandemic.
The report found that even after the COVID-19 vaccine was widely distributed across the
world, excess mortality has remained high within the Western world.
This raises serious concerns, according to the report, which notes that government
leaders and policymakers need to thoroughly investigate underlying causes of persistent excess mortality.
Excess mortality is the number of deaths from all causes during a humanitarian emergency, like COVID,
that exceed the number of deaths under normal circumstances, according to BMJ.
So excess mortality rates not only include lives lost to COVID, but also deaths that are
related to seeking to stop the spread of the virus or to treat it.
The report found that some of the unintended negative effects of social distancing and staying at home
orders cause people to not seek regular medical treatments or to delay those treatments.
There were also negative mental health effects from the extended periods of isolation.
And when it comes to the vaccine, the report found that there have been suspected adverse events
from those who took the vaccine.
Specifically, the study reported on analysis of COVID-19 vaccine Pfizer trials,
that show that those who received the vaccine, instead of the placebo, had a 36% higher risk of
serious adverse events. In the Moderna trial, those who received the vaccine had a 6% higher risk
of serious adverse events than those who did not receive the vaccine. There's a link in today's
show notes if you want to read the full report. But with that, that's going to do it for today's
