Starting point is 00:00:00 A Democratic aide has been found to be promoting the Chinese government. I'm Elizabeth Mitchell, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Tuesday, September 3rd. On Tuesday, a former aide to Democratic New York Governor Kathy Hokel was indicted for acting as an agent for the Chinese government. Linda Sun allegedly acted on behalf of the Chinese government and the Chinese Communist Party. A federal court in Brooklyn charged Sun for violating and conspiring to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act. Visa fraud, alien smuggling, and money laundering conspiracy. Sun allegedly committed these crimes while working as deputy chief of staff for Hockel. Sun's husband was also charged with money laundering conspiracy, conspiracy to commit bank fraud,
Starting point is 00:00:54 and misuse of means of identification. A spokesperson for Hockel's office said in a statement that the administration fired Sun after discovering evidence of misconduct. Sun and her husband were arrested Tuesday morning. Their schemes earned them millions of dollars. acting assistant director Christy Curtis said in a statement that Sun wielded her position of influence among executives to covertly promote the People's Republic of China and the Chinese Communist Party's agenda, directly threatening our country's national security.
Starting point is 00:01:26 Republican nominee Donald Trump says reports about his staffer's altercation at Arlington National Cemetery last Monday are a made-up story. NPR reported last week that two members of Donald Trump's campaign had a verbal and physical altercation with a cemetery official. In a Tuesday Truth Social Post, the former president said, There was no conflict or fighting at Arlington National Cemetery at last week. It was a made-up story by Comrade Kamala and her misinformation squad. She made it all up to make up for the fact that she and Sleepy Joe have blood on their hands for the incompetent Afghanistan withdrawal, the most embarrassing day in U.S. history.
Starting point is 00:02:04 Trump visited Arlington to mark the three-year anniversary of the Kabul airport attack that killed 13 U.S. service members amid the Biden-Americans. administration's withdrawal from Afghanistan. The mother-in-law of a dead soldier who invited Trump to join her family at the graveyard told CNN she was happy to welcome him. Christy Shamblin said the visit had no press presence but was a private celebration of deceased loved ones. Shamblin said families of fallen soldiers invited the Biden-Harris administration to join but
Starting point is 00:02:31 didn't hear back. However, First Lieutenant Jimmy McCain, the son of late Republican Senator John McCain, told CNN he viewed Trump's visit to the cemetery as a violation. Jimmy McCain, a registered Democrat who has expressed support for Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, accused Trump of using the cemetery as a campaign backdrop. Illegal immigrants make up around 75% of arrests in Midtown Manhattan for crimes like assault, robbery, and domestic violence, according to a report from the New York Post. Virginia Allen covers immigration for the Daily Signal.
Starting point is 00:03:05 Thanks so much for joining us, Virginia. It's great to be on this side of the microphone, Elizabeth. Thanks for having me. Virginia, why are migrants flooding the criminal justice system? That is a great question. And honestly, the answer is in some ways simple. In other ways, it's a little bit more complicated. But you have to think about the sheer numbers of illegal aliens that have crossed the border
Starting point is 00:03:25 just in the past four years under the Biden administration. We're looking at roughly about 10 million illegal aliens that have arrived on America's borders. Well, we know from comments made behind closed doors to Border Patrol agents, by Homeland Security Secretary a la Hander Margarcus that roughly about 85% of that 10 million have been released into the U.S. So then that puts the number within the U.S. roughly around 8.5 million people.
Starting point is 00:03:53 Well, consider the fact that just among the American population, according to a study that was done by the University of Georgia, about 8% of the U.S. population has felonies. So that's U.S. citizens, about 8%. So then if we were just to take 8%, percent of that 8.5 million illegal aliens within the U.S. and say, okay, those are probably individuals with a criminal record who are maybe willing to commit a crime again. That's 680,000 people. That's a lot of people. And where are the majority of these people going? They're going to U.S.
Starting point is 00:04:28 cities that have sanctuary laws that protect them from deportation. And that's not even adding in just the really the perfect storm of situational factors. that make crime a lot more appealing because we know it's obviously much harder for illegal aliens to get jobs. They're coming to the United States often with very little. Those are situations that make people very desperate to do things like commit minor crimes or even more serious crimes. Wow. So the immigrants are desperate. And New York is a sanctuary city. So police aren't allowed to work with ICE on cases where they believe suspects are in the country illegally. How is this affecting the ability of police to do their jobs.
Starting point is 00:05:10 It's very frustrating for them. You know, local law enforcement really has their hands tied by these sanctuary laws within the city of New York. And it's gotten to a point where now even Democratic Mayor Eric Adams has expressed openness to reversing these sanctuary policies. We've seen legislation introduced combined from Democrats and Republicans in New York, lawmakers saying, hey, we need to rethink the sanctuary law. because they're not serving the people of New York.
Starting point is 00:05:41 The New York City Chief of Patrol, John Shevel, he says that he wants New York City to change its sanctuary city laws because the hands of police really are tied when they cannot enforce ICE policies to detain these criminals. And obviously, if they can't be detained, well, then it's a lot harder for ICE to find them and actually deport them. So it really is a perfect storm. That makes a lot of sense.
Starting point is 00:06:07 Thanks so much, Virginia. Thanks, Elizabeth. Always great to be with you. Former Democratic New York Governor Andrew Cuomo will testify next week about his COVID-19 nursing home policies. Cuomo will appear on September 10th before the House Select Subcommittee on the coronavirus pandemic about how his administration handled the virus. The former governor controversially forced nursing homes to accept patients who had tested positive for COVID-19 and prohibited homes from requiring COVID-test for admission.
Starting point is 00:06:36 Cuomo's administration reported that 4,800 New Yorkers died of COVID-19 in nursing homes between March and May of 2020. Ohio Republican Representative Brad Winstrup said in a statement that the Democrat owes answers to the 15,000 families who lost loved ones in New York's nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Winstrip said, on September 10th, Americans will have the opportunity to hear directly from the former governor about New York's potentially fatal nursing home policies.
