I'm Elizabeth Mitchell, and this is the Daily Signals top news for Tuesday, August 13th. Former President Donald Trump sat down with Tesla CEO and owner of ex Elon Musk last night for an interview. The two-hour-long conversation that was streamed on X started about 40 minutes late because of what Musk said was a massive hack attempt on the site. The Daily Signals, Fred Lucas, tuned in last night. Fred, what were some main takeaways from the conversation?
Starting point is 00:01:12 Well, one thing I thought was pretty interesting, and it didn't get as much coverage immediately, was that, and it was the talk of a government efficiency commission. And it's something that Elon Musk really stressed any kind of pin Trump down on this. A lot of conservatives have talked about one of Trump's weak points when he was president in the first term was that he was not a very strong fiscal conservative, spent a lot of money, signed a lot of big budget bills and so forth. He has not, I mean, Trump's been consistently against any entitlement reforms and so forth. So we did see something, I thought that was interesting in terms of an interview from the right, which Trump was really pinned down on that because Musk brought us the ideal up of an efficiency
Starting point is 00:02:02 commission, talked about how it was government spending that's driving inflation. He brought it up a couple of times before Trump seemed to sort of commit to it. And then Musk said, if you do something like that, I would like to be a part of that. And that's when Trump said, you're great at making cuts, you're great at firing people and so forth. So that got a little bit more of attention the next day. But I thought in terms of a policy proposal, that was something that was interesting that jumped out. And Musk pledged his support for Trump while discussing the assassination attempt last night. Is that correct?
Starting point is 00:02:41 Yeah, yeah. He did. He, and this was interesting because Musk, a lot of people know, he was a Ron DeSantis supporter during the Republican primary season. Going back further than that, he was an enthusiastic Barack Obama supporter. I think he reluctantly voted for Joe Biden in 2020. But he'd been a Trump critic in the past. But he's on board now. He admired the way Trump handled the shooting in Pennsylvania on July 13th.
Starting point is 00:03:14 And he got him Trump to talk a little bit more about that early in the interview. And what did Trump say about how the assassination attempt changed his perspective? Two soundbats came out of that. I thought that were pretty interesting. One is that he talked about his faith in God. He said, I was a believer before, but I'm more of a believer now. And you can imagine why someone would be. I mean, a lot of that was just the sheer fortune of, like, turning his head a certain way
Starting point is 00:03:44 because that the shooter could have nailed him pretty easily. Had he just a centimeter here, centimeter there difference. Also, along those same lines, he talked about the chart that he was pointing to. The chart dealt with illegal immigration. That is, of course, one of Trump's big major points. and he somewhat comically said, illegal immigration saved my life. So that was kind of an interesting takeaway from the idea. Yeah, that's a funny moment.
Starting point is 00:04:13 Is there anything else that we should know about this conversation last night? Yeah. In terms of policy, I mentioned the fiscal commission a little bit earlier, but policy Trump did talk about Iron Dome. He wants an Iron Dome for the United States similar to what Israel has. and he did talk a lot about, he worries about the threat of a nuclear war. He mentioned that we don't have to worry about global warming as much as we have to worry about nuclear warming. And he was very critical of the Biden administration. He thought that they put us in a situation closer to that.
Starting point is 00:04:48 So we did have a mix of actual policies, conversation, and some really colorful sound bites last night. Wow, it sounds like a really interesting conversation. Thanks for reporting on this. Yeah, thanks for having me on. According to former president Donald Trump, Microsoft informed the Trump campaign that Iran had hacked it. The FBI is investigating the hack and leak of documents from campaign official Roger Stone's email.
Starting point is 00:05:18 At the end of July, Politico started receiving internal campaign documents from an anonymous AOL email account under the name Robert. The emails included Trump campaign research on Senator J.D. Vance's, quote-unquote, potential vulnerabilities. Trump campaign spokesman Stephen Chung said in a statement that the documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, intended to interfere
Starting point is 00:05:43 with the 2024 election and so chaos throughout our democratic process. Chung said the Iranians know that President Trump will stop their reign of terror, just like he did in the first four years in the White House. A Chicago judge denied anti-Israel protesters' request for more space to protest outside the Democratic National Convention next week. The demonstrators argued it was a First Amendment rights violation to deny their request for parade permits to march outside the convention. The Daily Signals, Tim Kennedy, has been following this story. Tim, who are these anti-Israel groups? Well, Elizabeth, I've been following this group March on the Deals.
Starting point is 00:06:25 DNC, 2024 for about a month now, and it's a coalition of 200 pro-Palestine and other radical left-leaning groups who got together in, I believe, November of this past November, to file a petition to formally protest and march on the Democratic National Convention set to start later this month on August 19th. They got together to just after the October 7th attacks on Israel in which hundreds, if not thousands of Israelis were murdered by Hamas terrorists. And they got together and have subsequently been protesting the Biden administration's supposed complicity of the, quote, genocide, end quote, in Gaza. Wow, and protesters will still be allowed close to the United Center, one of the convention locations. Tim will be covering protest at the DNC on the ground next week in Chicago. Despite this judge's ruling, what do you expect from these Palestine protests?
Starting point is 00:07:40 Oh, I mean, like we've already seen in our nation's capital, for instance, this past summer, the government can come in and say that you can't be in this space or you have to follow this path, But as we've seen organizers within March on the DNC already say is that demonstrators will likely not even follow the guidelines. They'll see a street in front of them. And I'm quoting one of the organizers, the chairman of the U.S. Palestinian Community Network, who said last week that if protesters see a road in front of them that's wide open, they're going to go down it. And they will get arrested by police. and he placed the blame solely on the police, not on the protesters violating the law. So the city has been quite specific and quite clear in what they're expecting of the protesters,
Starting point is 00:08:28 but I would not be surprised if they did not follow along with what the city has planned for them. Well, thanks for reporting on this, and we look forward to following your coverage next week. Thank you, and you can follow me at Tim Kennedy Jr. 1, and our other co-worker, Tony Kinnett, will be there as well. A U.S. federal prosecutor says that a Romanian real estate tycoon hired Hunter Biden in order to influence U.S. government agencies. Special counsel, David Weiss, who is investigating the president's son, said last Wednesday that Romanian Gabriel Popovich hired Hunter to leverage his connection to the Obama administration. Hunter reportedly lied about his work for Popovich. He failed to register as a lobbyist for a foreign power to protect his father. Instead, Hunter labeled his business as real estate management advice. According to Special Counsel Weiss, Popovich hired Hunter because he faced bribery charges in Romania
Starting point is 00:09:24 and hoped the son of the Venn Vice President could end the investigation. Joe Biden handled the Eastern European portfolio for the Obama administration at the time. Popovich wired Hunter more than $3 million, but Weiss said that Hunter did almost no work in exchange. Republicans have slammed Kamala Harris' running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walls, for his management of the 2020 riots in Minneapolis following the death of George Floyd. Republican Vice President nominee J.D. Vance said Walls allowed rioters to burn the streets of Minneapolis. Trump campaign spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said in a statement that Governor Walls allowed Minneapolis to burn for days, despite President Trump's offer to deploy soldiers and cries of help from the liberal mayor of Minneapolis.
Starting point is 00:10:08 The Washington Post, however, writes that then-President Donald Trump praised Walls at the time and blamed the looting violence and burning on Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. In response, Walls thanked Trump for his strategic guidance. Frey maintained that he was not at fault. Walls waited a day after Frey requested assistance to send in the Minnesota National Guard. That was three days after Floyd's death. According to the Washington Post, some activists have called Wall's delayed response to the rioters compassionate, As Wall said, he sympathized with the concerns of the rioters.
