I'm Virginia Allen, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Thursday, January 18th.
Here are today's headlines.
It has been over a year and a half since a gunman entered Rob Elementary School in Uvaldi, Texas and killed 19 children in two teachers.
You will remember that it took law enforcement over an hour to engage the shooter and stop the slaughter of innocent lives within the school.
The Justice Department launched an investigation after the tragedy to find out what.
What went wrong? Why did it take so long for police to respond? The DOJ released the findings of
that investigation today. And in the words of the Justice Department, there were a number of
cascading failures that contributed to 21 lives lost in Uvaldi, Texas on May 24, 2022.
The DOJ found that there were failures across multiple areas from leadership, decision-making,
tactics, policy, and training, all of which allowed the gunmen
to carry out his rampage for 77 minutes before he was killed by law enforcement.
Attorney General Merrick Garland was in Uvaldi today and unveiled the DOJ's findings per CBS News.
The law enforcement response at Rob Elementary School on May 24, 2022, and in the hours and days after,
it was a failure that should not have happened. We hope to honor the victims and the survivors by working together to try to prevent anything
like this from ever happening again here or anywhere.
According to the Hill, the investigative team spent extended time in Uvaldi and interviewed more
than 200 people from more than 30 organizations and looked over more than 13,000 pieces of
evidence as they conducted their investigation.
The Texas House of Representatives conducted a similar investigation, and both the DOJ and Texas
House found that nearly 400 officers who had a rocker.
on the scene at the school did not recognize that they were dealing with an active shooter situation.
The officers treated the situation as a barricaded shooter with a hostage crisis.
Because law enforcement didn't recognize that it was an active shooter situation, they failed to act swiftly.
The DOJ report states that an active shooter with access to victims should never be considered
and treated as a barricade subject. The report also found that the head of the Uvaldi School District's
police department was supposed to assume command and control of the response to an active shooter.
But the chief of police failed to perform that role and did not transfer the role to somebody else.
The police chief was fired after the shooting along with four other officers.
Heritage Foundation President Dr. Kevin Roberts spoke at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland today.
Heritage is, of course, the parent organization of the Daily Signal.
The World Economic Forum is an international organization focused on agendas related to politics, business, and other spheres of influence that shape society around the world.
They meet annually for a large meeting, and those who attend are often elites discussing issues like climate change.
That's why Dr. Roberts says that he was surprised to receive an invitation.
But he did, and was invited to speak on a panel today discussing what to expect if a repatriate.
Republican is elected as the next president of the United States.
Dr. Roberts was asked what the agenda might be that would be top of mind for a Republican president
should one be elected in 2024.
Here's what he had to say.
The kind of person, and I'll be candid here, because I think I've been invited here to be candid,
the kind of person who will come into the next conservative administration is going to be governed by one principle.
And that is destroying the grasp that political elites and unelected technocrats.
have over the average person. And if I may, I will be candid and say that the agenda that
every single member of the administration needs to have is to compile a list of everything that's
ever been proposed at the World Economic Forum and object all of them wholesale.
Anyone not prepared to do that and take away this power of the unelected bureaucrats and give it
back to the American people is unprepared to be part of the next conservative administration.

We have an update today in the legal case. Former President Donald Trump is facing down in Georgia.
Trump is facing charges of election interference in Georgia following the 2020 election.
Fulton County District Attorney Fannie Willis brought that case against Trump, but now accusations have been brought against Willis.
One of Trump's co-defendants in the Georgia election case is an attorney named Mike Roman.
While Roman claims that Willis had a romantic relationship with the top prosecutor that she hired for the case.
Georgia judge Scott McAfee has scheduled a hearing on February 15th to examine the claim.
The judge has told Willis she must respond to the allegations in writing by February 2nd.
Willis has not directly confirmed or denied the allegations in regards to relation.
with prosecutor Nathan Wade. She has, however, indicated that she believes race is playing a role in the accusations that are being made against her. Stay tuned.
The House Homeland Security Committee held its second hearing today of the impeachment proceedings against DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
The hearing was titled Voices for the Victims, the heartbreaking reality of the Mayorkas border crisis.
Two mothers shared their stories before members of Congress.
Emmy Noble's daughter was murdered by an illegal alien in 2022, who was also an MS-13 gang member.
Josephine Dunn lost her 26-year-old daughter in 2021 to fentanyl poisoning.
Dunn told members of Congress today that she feels Majorcas is partially responsible for her daughter's death
because of the Biden administration's open border policies that are allowing drug traffickers
to bring illicit fentanyl across the border.
The mother went so far as to say the U.S. is at war with the cartels.
We're losing our children.
We're losing a generation of children.
We're at war.
We need our military at the border.
That's what we need.
We don't need more border patrol.
We need our military at the border, stopping the drugs, stopping people from coming in.
They can't come in.
We're full.
We're closed.
That's it.
Following the hearing today, all 18 Republican members of the House Homeland Security Committee
announced their support for Mayorkas's impeachment by the House of Representatives.
While Mayorkas could face impeachment in the House, it's very unlikely that he would face removal
given Democrats' control of the Senate.
And with that, that's going to do it for today's episode.
