Starting point is 00:00:25 We'd love to talk, business. Hunter Biden's criminal trial has come to a close. Now, it's up to the jury to decide Hunter's fate. I'm Virginia Allen, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Monday, June 10. Just hours ago, closing arguments took place in Hunter Biden's criminal trial. Hunter is facing three felony charges, including charges related to purchasing a gun while he was actively using cocaine. The prosecution argued during the trial that Hunter knowingly lied on paperwork to purchase the gun, because he claimed that he was not using drugs at the time. The prosecution pointed to Hunter's own book in which he discusses using drugs during that
Starting point is 00:01:16 period of his life, and they also relied on text messages that Hunter sent that indicated he was using drugs within days of making the gun purchase. Hunter has pled not guilty to all the charges. Hunter's attorneys rested the case without calling Hunter to testify. As of Friday, it had been unclear whether or not Hunter was going to take to the stand in own case. The case now goes to the jury, and we do expect to have a decision from the jury this week, likely sooner rather than later. If found guilty on all charges, Hunter Biden could face up to 25 years in prison. Thousands of pro-Palestine protesters gathered around the White House on Saturday. They held up long stretches of red fabric, what was meant to represent a red line to President Joe
Starting point is 00:02:03 Biden. This is what the crowd sounded like outside the White House per Forbes-Brick. news. There, the protesters are shouting, globalizing in Tifada. But the protesters did not stop at anti-Semitic chants. The protest turned into a riot as participants defaced statues in D.C. In Lafayette Square, across from the White House, rioters put red paint on a statue of Andrew Jackson and his horse, and they use paint and markers to write things like boycott Israel products on the statue. Another statue in Lafayette Square of a French army commander who fought alongside George Washington was also defaced. Protesters wrote on the base of the statue things like Free Gaza, Genocide Joe, and Shame on You Joe.
Starting point is 00:03:03 The Washington Post reports that as of 3 p.m. on Sunday, the National Park had successfully removed most of the graffiti from the statue of Andrew Jackson. But paint and stickers could still be seen on three other statues in the park. But the pro-Palestine protest was not the only protest in D.C. over the weekend, LGBT enthusiasts celebrate gay pride month during June. And on Saturday, thousands of marchers took to the streets of D.C. for their annual gay pride parade. And just outside D.C. on Sunday in Montgomery County, Maryland, LGBT activists held a kids' pride parade and street fair. Yes, a gay pride parade specifically for children.
Starting point is 00:03:47 The Daily Signal's Elizabeth Troutman was there and covered this parade for kids. And she joins us now. Elizabeth, thanks for being here. Thank you so much for having me. Elizabeth, while you were at this gay pride parade for kids, you spoke to a mom who was at the parade. She was marching in the parade. She had her two and a half year old in a stroller that she was pushing. What did she say to you when you ask her? Why are you here?
Starting point is 00:04:10 I ask a number of parents I saw with small children ranging from, I would say, a couple month old babies to elementary schoolers, some tweens and teenagers. And this particular mom with the two-and-year-old in the stroller told me that she believes pride is for everyone. I asked her what she would say to people who think pride is not for children. And she said that's the whole point of pride is that it's inclusive and it's for everyone. And I understand that there was also a drag queen there that was taking pictures of children, correct?
Starting point is 00:04:40 Yes, there was a drag queen named Tara Hoot present. And I went up to him and asked him a few questions. and he revealed that he has been a teacher in D.C. for 26 years. So that's kind of interesting. He's a drag queen by night, teacher by day. Fascinating. Okay, there were a number of displays at this parade, books being sold. There was also an image that you shared in the story that you wrote covering this parade
Starting point is 00:05:06 of like a poster called Gender Galaxy. What is the Gender Galaxy? So there were a number of booths for parents and kids to explore. One of them was from a counselor who focuses on LGBT kids and adults, and she was displaying both the gender galaxy and the sexuality galaxy. On the gender galaxy, we have one kind of planet group that is for assigned sex, which includes male, female, and intersex, and then another one with gender identity, which includes transgender, agender, gender, queer,
Starting point is 00:05:42 third gender, cisgender, gender fluid, non-binary. In some other words, I haven't even seen before. So it was definitely an interesting new representation for kids that was displayed at that booth. What was the overall atmosphere at the parade? It was very interesting to see so many families so excited to teach their kids about radical gender ideology at such young ages. I didn't really realize how widespread this indoctrination of children is until seeing it with my own eyes. So that was definitely an eye-opening experience. Yeah, certainly is.
Starting point is 00:06:20 Well, thank you for being there for reporting on it. And you can check out today's show notes for a link to Elizabeth Story if you want to read more about the gender parade for kids. The European Union may have just taken a big step to the political right. The European Parliament is the legislative body of the European Union. There are 720 seats in the European Parliament, and over the weekend, about 185 million voters cast their votes in Europe across 27 countries to elect members of the European Parliament, and Europe's conservatives won big. I spoke with the director of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom here at the Heritage Foundation,
Starting point is 00:07:01 Nile Gardner, about the elections, and I ask if the conservative wins were surprised. Here's what he told me. Well, I think that the expectation in advance was that conservative parties would make significant gains, but the sheer scale of the victories that we've seen by, by partners on the right across Europe exceeded expectations. And I would describe the election results over the weekend as nothing short of a political revolution. within Europe. In response to this political revolution, France's president, Emmanuel Macron, has called for snap legislative elections at the end of this month and the beginning of July. According to Gardner, this is a very risky move on Macron's behalf, as he is essentially
Starting point is 00:07:51 giving his nation the choice to further embrace a conservative government, which would make him a lame duck president. And at the ballot box last week, French voters said they had enough of Emmanuel Macron. So let's see what happens with the parliamentary elections that are coming up at the end of June and also into July. And we'll see whether Macron ends up as a lame duck president. There's a strong possibility of that. You can catch my full conversation with Nile Gardner on the parliamentary elections in Europe and what those results mean for the U.S. on the Tuesday morning edition right here on the Daily Signal podcast. And for a little more international news today over the weekend, four is really.
Starting point is 00:08:33 hostages were rescued from Gaza. The IDF carried out the high-stakes mission in daylight and successfully brought home hostages to their families in Israel. In the process of the rescue, one IDF soldier was killed. Over 270 Palestinians are reported to have been killed in the rescue, though those numbers have not been confirmed. The hostages rescued include 26-year-old Namgamani, 21-year-old, Amalg-Mejan, 27-year-old, Adre Kutslav, and 40-year-old, Shal-Maziv. About 120 hostages remain in Gaza. Tensions appear to be running high in Israel as the war carries on. On Sunday, a member of Israel's war cabinet, Benny Gantz, announced his resignation.
Starting point is 00:09:20 He has a longtime arrival of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Gaunt's resignation was not necessarily a total shock. Several weeks ago, he gave Netanyahu a deadline to come up with a plan to replace Hamas' rule in Gaza by June 8th. The deadline came and went. Gaunt said during his speech Sunday that Netanyahu is preventing us from reaching real victory. The president of Eurasia Group, Ian Bremmer, joined CNN after the rescue of the hostages and Gantz's resignation to discuss the news. But Bremer was critical of the interview on X after the fact. Why? Because CNN called the rescue of the hostages a release in the text that appeared at the bottom of the screen, known as the Chiron.
Starting point is 00:10:06 Bremer wrote, disappointed to see CNN Chiron of hostage release during my interview today when Hamas did no such thing. Bremer noted that this sort of mistake repeated by UN officials and others today is maddening. With that, that's going to do it for today's episode.
