Trump's vice presidential pick will address the Republican National Convention tonight.
I'm Elizabeth Mitchell, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Wednesday, July 17th.
Today is day three of the Republican National Convention, which started Monday and ends tomorrow.
Tyler O'Neill is on the ground in Milwaukee with the Daily Signal team, and he joins us now.
Tyler, what were some highlights of last night's speeches?
Yeah, it's great to be here.
Elizabeth. So last night's speeches, we had a really interesting surprise appearance by Nikki Haley,
who came and endorsed Trump there on the floor. None of us were expecting that, and I thought it was a really big surprise.
I thought Nikki Haley did a good job, but the audience was not necessarily on her side. So she definitely got a few booze,
but she said what she needed to, and she moved on. Then there were other,
Trump rivals, you know, former rivals who came and spoke. One of them was obviously Ron DeSantis
and Vivek Ramoswamy. And Vivek did a really excellent job delivering a very important message
to black Americans, to young Americans, and to immigrants. I thought Vivek was really powerful
when he said, you know, for black Americans, we want for you the same thing.
we want for every other American, which is, you know, good housing, good opportunities, and a justice
system that treats everyone the same regardless of your race and regardless of your political
affiliation, which I thought was a really, really powerful line. But he also talked about
immigrants, and he said, you know, to legal immigrants, you're just like my parents. To illegal
immigrants, we will deport you, not because you're all bad people, but because you broke the law. And
America depends on the rule of law. So J.D. Vance is speaking tonight. What should we expect from him?
Yeah, I think we should expect a very, a very big, unifying, raw, raw speech, but also one that's
talking about the struggles that Americans like him have had. I think we're going to have a lot of echoes of
Hillbilly Elegie, and then we're also probably going to hear how strong we should be standing
against the Chinese Communist Party and supporting Israel. But Vance is going to, you know,
everybody here, I think, is excited for Vance. There's been a lot of energy, and everyone's
constantly talking about him. He's probably one of the number one questions that has all been,
you know, that the journalists have been raising and that people,
have asked me during interviews, and I think there's pretty much unanimous support for Vance
is the pick. He's a very natural ally of Trump's, and he delivers the same sort of message to the
forgotten man and woman in this country, which is, we know you, we understand your problems,
and we're going to do everything, you know, we're going to fight like hell to make your life better.
That's great to hear. And how did former President Donald Trump,
react to his previous rivals, Haley and Ron DeSantis giving speeches last night.
Yeah, yeah. So during DeSantis' speech, I believe it was, that was when he stood up and
applauded. During Haley's speech, he looked a little quizzical at first. But we all have to
remember, you know, Trump's the one who invited Haley there. And Haley made very clear at the beginning
of her remarks, like she was putting all of the fire of the campaign behind her. She is lining up
for Donald Trump because he represents the alternative to Joe Biden. And she was, she couldn't have
been clear that she's on the Trump train now. And, you know, Trump responded a little quizzically,
you know, you could see him talking with somebody else while she was announcing
her support, but I do think that he does, to some degree, respect and acknowledge her support and
value it because that's a really strong sign of unity in the party.
Awesome. Well, thank you so much for joining us, Tyler. Have a great rest of the day.
Hey, my pleasure. Thanks so much, Elizabeth.
Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheedell said Tuesday that her agency was solely in charge of security
at the rally Saturday night where former president Donald Trump was shot.
In a prior interview with ABC News, Cheatel had said that local law enforcement was responsible
for the building where the shooter opened fire.
The former president was wounded in the ear and narrowly missed being fatally shot in the head
when a would-be assassin shot him at about 6.10 p.m. Saturday in Butler, Pennsylvania,
which is about 33 miles north of Pittsburgh.
Cheathel told CNN on Wednesday that the Secret Service was solely responsible.
for security that night.
Let's listen to some of her interview.
At that particular site, we divided up areas of responsibility, but the secret service is
solely responsible for the design and the implementation and the execution of the site.
And that's what I was trying to stress was that we just divided up areas of responsibility.
She said no assets from the agency were diverted from the rally at all that day,
even though there were other events in the state on Saturday requiring some agency protection.
The Secret Service is doing an internal review of what happened and is looking forward to an external review, according to Cheatel.
The director dodged a question regarding if the security perimeter was too small when the Secret Service was aware of a credible threat from Iran to the president.
What we increased was what we felt was appropriate for the former president and for that particular event on that day.
We have been increasing the assets and the resources and the staffing that we have been providing to.
the former president since he was a presidential candidate, and then the presumptive nominee.
That's what I can tell you.
Cheedle said, if there are things the Secret Service needs to change about its policies,
procedures, or methods, it will do so.
The Biden administration has intervened to prevent the Secret Service from briefing
a House committee, which is investigating the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.
Representative Andy Biggs of Arizona, a Republican member of the House Oversight Committee,
emailed a statement to the Family Research Council saying that after the Secret Service agreed to brief members of the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday,
the Director of Homeland Security took over communications with the committee and has since refused to confirm a briefing time.
Big said,
The Oversight Committee has a long record of bipartisan oversight of the Secret Service,
and the unprofessionalism we are witnessing from the current DHS leadership is unacceptable.
Representative Michael Cloud, a Republican from Texas, confirmed the committee had scheduled its first briefing today,
but said that DHS has stepped in between the communications of the Secret Service and the Oversight Committee,
and are now trying to control the communication.
The briefing would precede a full committee hearing on the Trump assassination attempt with Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatel next Monday.
Cloud said Chairman James Comer issued subpoenas to assure Cheetah.
shows up. The Oversight Committee is one of at least three seeking to investigate the assassination
attempt. The House Judiciary Committee plans to question FBI director Christopher Ray next Wednesday.
The House Committee on Homeland Security plans to interview the leaders of the DHS, FBI,
and the Secret Service. NBC omitted the part of Joe Biden's recent interview with Lester Holt,
where the president scolded Holt for being a Trump enabler. Biden responded to Holt. Biden responded to
Holt saying that he looked confused in his June 27th debate with Trump.
Here's Biden, courtesy of Fox News.
Lester, look, why don't you guys ever talk about the 18 to 28 lies he told?
Where are you on this?
Why didn't the press ever talk about that?
28 times was confirmed he lied in that debate.
I had a bad, bad night.
I wasn't feeling well at all.
Holt responded to Biden's accusation saying,
we've reported many of the issues, to which Biden said, no, you haven't.
At one point in the interview, Biden exclaimed, what's with you guys? Come on, man, as he defended
his criticism of Donald Trump, despite calling on Americans to lower the temperatures
after the assassination attempt in a speech.
President Joe Biden is expected to endorse drastic changes to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Biden reportedly said in a call with progressive Congress members that he was about to announce a major initiative to limit the court, which could result in legislation setting term limits for the justices and enforceable ethics codes.
According to the Washington Post, Biden said, I've been working with constitutional scholars for the last three months, and I need some help.
This comes after multiple Supreme Court rulings came out against the administration.
In late June, the Fisher v. United States decision held that the Department of Justice abused the law to go after former President Donald Trump and his supporters over the January 6th Capitol riot.
The court issued another opinion in early July on Trump's presidential immunity appeal, finding that while in office, presidents have immunity from criminal prosecutions when it comes to their official acts.
