Starting point is 00:00:25 We'd love to talk. Business. Vice President Kamala Harris oversaw the certification of the 2024 presidential election results in Congress today. I'm Virginia Allen and this is the Daily Signal Top News in 10 for Monday, January 6th. This afternoon, Congress certified the results of the presidential election. This act formally clears the way for President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration on Monday, January 20th, as is tradition and policy. The vice president oversees that certification and announces the result. of the election. And in this case, of course, that's Vice President Kamala Harris.

Starting point is 00:01:11 The state of the vote for the President of the United States, as delivered to the President of the Senate, is as follows. The whole number of the electors appointed to vote for President of the United States is 538. Within that whole number, the majority is 270. The votes for President of the United States are as follows. Donald J. Trump of the state of Florida, has received 312 votes. Kamala D. Harris. Harris received 226 electoral votes. Congress's certification of the election went a little bit differently than four years ago. Today is, of course, January 6th, and on this day in 2021, the certification was interrupted when a crowd entered the Capitol building, some of whom were intent on stopping that certification

Starting point is 00:02:07 of the president. There were no interruptions today. however, there was a strong security presence in and around the Capitol grounds, and a snowstorm in the nation's capital also made for a rather quiet day in the city. President Joe Biden has awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Leftist billionaire George Soros. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation's highest civilian honor, and George Soros is a major funder of Democrat campaigns and leftist causes. So why did Biden award such a controversial? figure the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Daily Signal's Tyler O'Neill has been covering this story. He joins us now. Hey, Tyler. Hey, Virginia. How are you? Oh, you're doing well. It's a snow day here in Washington, D.C., but the news stops for no one. So thanks for being with us to cover this story.

Starting point is 00:02:59 It was Saturday that Biden announced that the Presidential Medal of Freedom was going to be awarded to 19 people. And of course, one of those people on that list was George Soros. And it's really no secret that the political right and even many moderate Democrats take. issue with Soros and the groups that he's funded. So, Tyler, why do you think that Biden chose him to receive this honor because he is so controversial? Yeah, I think that this decision marks, you know, it's a fitting, if rather disgusting end to a very far left woke administration. Because, you know, Biden campaigned famously as a moderate. He had a little bit of a moderate track record when he was in the Senate, although he also did things like go after orchestrate the quote-unquote

Starting point is 00:03:45 high-tech lynching of Clarence Thomas. So even then, you know, Biden's always been a little bit of a questionable figure. But as president, he has pushed a lot of these all of government woke initiatives, from LGBTQ issues to climate, to, you know, he likes to slosh this money around with these climate initiatives. And one of the biggest figures on the left, when it comes to the, what I call the woketipus, the massive influence campaign that the left has through all these different NGOs, infiltrating and impacting the federal government. George Soros is really, you know, a mastermind behind these groups, sending out money through his Open Society foundations. And it's quite fitting that his son, Alex, accepted the award

Starting point is 00:04:35 from President Biden in his father's place because Alex is now the one who's running. the Open Society Foundations. Wow. Roots go deep. Who are some of the other names on that list of a presidential medal of freedom recipients that stood out to you? Yeah.

Starting point is 00:04:52 So we had climate alarmist, essentially TV actor, Bill Nye was one of the recipients. And of course, there's a really revealing moment, a photo where you have Hillary Clinton, who was another recipient. I think somebody said

Starting point is 00:05:08 this was her participation trophy. But she's sitting there smiling and clapping as Alex Soros receives the Presidential Medal of Freedom. There's also a big LGBT donor by the name of Tim Gill, who infamously said of conservatives, he said, we're going to punish the wicked. And that was a reference to banning so-called discrimination, many of these religious freedom cases, like with Jack Phillips, Tim Gill considers people who are not going to celebrate the LGBT identity and events along that identity. He says, if you don't celebrate that, you are the wicked. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today that he's stepping down, both as the leader of his party and as prime minister. Trudeau has been the leader of the Liberal Party in Canada for over 10 years. He will stay as the leader until a new leader is chosen by his party.

Starting point is 00:06:36 Polls have indicated that the popularity of Trudeau's leader, Liberal Party is slipping significantly. Signs have pointed to Canada's Conservative Party easily defeating the Liberal Party in the next election later this year. A reality that Trudeau acknowledged influenced influence his decision to resign. This country deserves a real choice in the next election and it has become clear to me that if I'm having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election. A new prime minister, and leader of the Liberal Party will carry its values and ideals into that next election. President-elect Donald Trump has been critical of Trudeau's leadership.

Starting point is 00:07:21 Trump responded to the news on social media today, writing many people in Canada love being the 51st state. The United States can no longer suffer the massive trade deficits and subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this and resigned. If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be totally secure from the threat of the Russian and Chinese ships that are consistently surrounding them. Together, what a great nation it would be. Now, there is no indication that Canada has any interest in becoming the 51st state, but Trump's post did garner a lot of attention in the news today.

Starting point is 00:08:03 Conservative Party leader Pierre Paul Yves called Trudeau's decision, to step down a political maneuver. And he added that nothing has changed, explaining that the party's politics have not changed. They were just as pleased with Trudeau's lack of popularity. Now let's hit our news flashes for the day. First up, it's official. President Biden has announced a ban on new offshore gas and oil drilling. The ban includes drilling along the entire Atlantic coast and eastern Gulf of Mexico, the Pacific coast of the U.S. and a section of the Bering Sea of Alaska. That's according to the BBC.

Starting point is 00:08:44 Biden's action is a blow to Trump, since the type of ban will be challenging for the Trump administration to quickly undo. But Trump did not appear dismayed today. He put out a statement saying, Fear not, these orders will all be terminated shortly, and we will become a nation of common sense and strength. Also today, President Biden signed a bill

Starting point is 00:09:10 to up Social Security payments to those who have had careers in public service, such as teachers and police officers. But his actions raise concerns because there is already a strain on Social Security trust funds. According to PBS News, the annual Social Security and Medicare trustee report released last May said the program's trust fund will be unable to pay full benefits beginning in 2035. So paying out more to some recipients will mean that Social Security trust funds will be unable to pay recipients the full amount that they have been promised even sooner.
