I'm Brian Gottstein, and this is the Daily Signal top news for Friday, March 22nd.
Here are today's headlines.
Daily Signal colleagues, Jared Stapman and Samantha Sherriss report that by a vote of 286 to 134
and over the objections of conservatives, the House of Representatives passed a $1.2 trillion
spending package late Friday morning, avoiding a partial government shutdown.
The bill now goes to the Senate where it's expected to pass.
The Hill reported that the 1,000-plus page package of bills includes funding for the Departments of State,
education, defense, labor, homeland security, and health and human services for fiscal year 2024.
It also contains funding for, quote, general government and foreign operations and the Internal Revenue Service.
The bill saw significant opposition from conservatives who blasted it before and after it passed.
101 Republicans and 185 Democrats voted for the legislation,
while 112 Republicans and 23 Democrats voted against it.
Twelve Republicans and Democrats didn't vote.
Florida Republican Representative Matt Gates said in a statement following the vote.
Today, I voted emphatically against yet another trillion dollar spending package.
I would rather die on the field politically than continue to surrender to America's defeat and demise.
Surrendering is precisely what this omnibus does.
It surrenders on the border, on the budget, and on the bureaucrats that are choking out the
economic freedom of our citizens. Montana Republican Representative Matt Rosendale, who also voted
against the legislation, said, once again, the D.C. cartel has unified against the American people.
We're now on the hook for another $1.2 trillion in spending. We call it the Uniparty for this reason
exactly. Not even a majority of the majority agreed with this bill. Heritage Action for America,
the grassroots arm of the Heritage Foundation issued a press release Thursday evening saying the
fails to cut spending and penalizes those struggling to afford the American dream. Heritage
Action said the bill keeps the government on a course toward financial catastrophe and keeps the
border crisis and inflation growing. Will House Speaker Mike Johnson be ousted from his position?
It's possible. Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Green filed a motion to vacate the
speaker's position earlier today. Green told reporters that she filed the motion to vacate after Johnson
worked to pass the $1.2 trillion minibus spending package,
claiming that Johnson betrayed the Republican conference and broke its rules.
She said that it was time for Republicans to go through the process of finding a new Speaker
of the House who will stand with Republicans in the Republican majority instead of standing
with the Democrats.
In a statement, a spokesman for Johnson said,
Speaker Johnson always listens to the concerns of members but is focused on governing.
He'll continue to push conservative legislation that secures our border,
strengthens our national defense and demonstrates how we grow our majority.
Johnson was elected as House Speaker on October 25th after former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted.
Former President Donald Trump may soon be a whole lot richer, roughly $3 billion richer.
The New York Times reports that the former president's social media company and the parent company of his digital communications platform true social,
merged with a shell company today.
The New York Times reports that investors in the shell entity Digital World Acquisition Corporation will now become shareholders of Trump Media and Technology Group, a three-year-old company that could begin trading on the stock market as early as Monday under the stock symbol, DJT.
The merger comes just days before Trump must post a $464 million bond in a fraud case.
His lawyer said earlier this week that getting that much money together was a practical impossibility.
If he doesn't come up with the money, New York Attorney General Letitia James could start
seizing Trump's assets unless an appeals court steps in.
And for some world news, Axios reports that Russia and China vetoed a U.S. drafted U.N. Security
Council resolution. They called for an immediate and sustained ceasefire in Gaza, along with the
release of all remaining hostages held by Hamas. This isn't the first time a ceasefire resolution
has failed. According to Axios, this is a fourth time since the war began in
October that the Security Council failed to agree on a resolution calling for a ceasefire.
China's UN ambassador said that if the U.S. was serious about a ceasefire, it wouldn't have
vetoed multiple other council resolutions and played a game of words while being ambiguous
and evasive on critical issues. Prior to the vote, Israel's ambassador to the UN weighed in
about a ceasefire saying, remember, Israel wants a ceasefire more than anyone else. In fact, Israel
demands a ceasefire. These are our children fighting in Gaza. Our troops are making the ultimate
sacrifice in our defense. But there's only one formula for an immediate ceasefire. Hamas must
release the hostages and turn themselves in. This is what the world should be demanding.
A ceasefire without any demands from the Hamas terrorists only serves to keep them in power.
