Starting point is 00:00:00 Hunter Biden can no longer practice law in D.C. after being found guilty. I'm Ferdinna Allen, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Tuesday, June 25th. The D.C. Court of Appeals suspended Hunter Biden's license to practice law in the District of Columbia. Hunter graduated from Yale Law School in 1996. The decision to strip him of his right to practice law in D.C. comes after the president's son was found guilty on all three. federal felony gun charges that he faced on June 11th. The jury decided that he violated laws meant to prevent drug addicts from owning firearms. Then last week, the office of the disciplinary counsel in D.C. sent a letter to the D.C. Court of Appeals calling for the suspension of Hunter's license. The court order says that his offenses are serious crimes as defined by D.C. Bar Rule 11. The order also instructed the DC Bar's Board of Professional Responsibility to conduct a formal proceeding to determine the nature of the offense and whether it involves moral turpitude. Moral turpitude refers to wicked, deviant behavior constituting an immoral, unethical, or unjust departure from ordinary social standards.
Starting point is 00:01:28 That's according to Cornell Law School. Hunter's guilty verdict marked the first time that the son of a sitting president, has been found guilty in a federal criminal court. President Biden's efforts to forgive student loans continue to hit roadblocks. Two judges appointed by former President Barack Obama struck down part of the Biden administration's student loan forgiveness plan on Monday. The White House said it would continue to vigorously defend its student loan forgiveness and repayment proposals.
Starting point is 00:02:01 Judge John Ross of Missouri and Daniel Crabtree of Kansas blocked part. of President Joe Biden's savings on a valuable education or save plan in response to lawsuits filed by Republican states. The save plan is an income-driven repayment plan and would limit student loan repayment to 5% of a borrower's discretionary monthly income instead of the current 10%. The plan would also forgive some student loan debt, but under the court's decision, the Biden administration cannot use the save plan to forgive any sort of. student loan debt until a final decision in this case is reached. Led by Kansas Attorney General Chris Kobach and Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, two Republican coalitions filed lawsuits
Starting point is 00:02:49 against the so-called safe plan. They accused Biden of unilaterally trying to impose an extraordinarily expensive and controversial policy that would not get through Congress. In April, when Attorney General Bailey filed the lawsuit, he said the president does not get to thwart the Constitution when it suits his political agenda. I'm filing suit to halt his brazen attempt to curry favor with some citizens by forcing others to shoulder their debts. The Constitution will continue to mean something as long as I'm Attorney General, according to Bailey. The judge's preliminary orders only halt the plan until a trial of the separate lawsuits. Both Obama appointees said that they thought that the Republican,
Starting point is 00:03:36 arguments would likely prevail at trial. The Biden administration is not allowed to exempt any more debtors from paying their loans under the plan until decisions are reached in both cases. A Republican Congresswoman from Texas succeeded in amending the annual National Defense Authorization Act to prevent the Pentagon from subsidizing abortions with taxpayer dollars. Representative Beth Van Dyne told the daily signal that her amendment would roll back Biden, a legal Department of Defense Abortion Travel Reimbursement Policy issued in a memo on October 20, 22, which she said was in clear violation of historic bipartisan norms and current law. Here's a clip of an interview that Congresswoman Beth Van Dyne had with us here on the Daily Signal that we ran as a bonus episode.
Starting point is 00:04:29 But if you didn't get a chance to catch the full episode, here's what she had to say. Really, we wanted to ensure that DOD dollars were being spent on national defense. This is just simply rolling back Biden's illegal DOD abortion travel policy. He issued it under in October 2022 in a memo, but this was going totally against the Hyde Amendment, which has been in practice for decades, I mean, literally over 50 years, that both Democrats and Republicans have agreed on. And again, we already have stretched DOD resources. So it just seems like underwriting abortions through funding for flights and hotels, it's just pandering to the abortion lobbyists and there's nothing to increase our national security.
Starting point is 00:05:16 Van Dyne also said that both Democrats and Republicans should support the bill. One Democrat, Henry Quayor of Texas, voted for her amendment. Well, one, it's following the law. I mean, you're holding an administration accountable for following the law. Two, this has been practiced. This has been agreed upon by administrations from both parties, from representatives from both parties for 50 years because it's common sense. Three, if you're really concerned about national security and supporting our military when you already have a stretched DOD budget, it does not need to be going to fund abortion. Van Dyne said many of her colleagues in the Senate may not support the bill if Democrats strip her amendment. Former President Donald Trump could be arrested after the debate on Thursday.
Starting point is 00:06:08 Special counsel Jack Smith asked Judge Aline Cannon to order Trump to stop saying the FBI was authorized to assassinate him and his family when agents searched his Mar-a-Lago estate in 2022. Trump defense lawyer Todd Blanche said that if the South Florida judge granted the special counsel's request and if Trump says something, during his CNN debate with President Joe Biden on Thursday that appeared to violate the order, prosecutors can get an arrest warrant, and if signed, they can arrest him. Blanche said the gag order would be extremely chilling to President Trump and what he's allowed to say. Judge Cannon rejected a request for a gag order against threatening statements about law enforcement last month. It's important to note that Cannon is a Trump appointee. Prosecutors said the order was necessary to prevent
Starting point is 00:07:02 Trump from inciting a violent act on law enforcement. Blanche argued Trump's comments created no danger for law enforcement agents. The case concerns Trump's handling of federal classified documents after he left office. Again, be sure to catch that debate on Thursday night.
