I'm Samantha Escheris, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Monday, September 18.
Here are today's headlines.
The president's son, Hunter Biden, sued the IRS today.
The lawsuit says, despite clear warnings from Congress that they were prohibited from disclosing the contents of their testimony to the public in another forum,
Mr. Shapley and Mr. Ziegler's testimony only emboldened their media campaign against Mr. Biden.
Shapley and Ziegler refer to two IRS agents, Gary Shapley and Joseph Ziegler.
The lawsuit also says, and finally, since their public testimony before the House of Representatives on July 19, 2023,
the agents have become regular guests on national media outlets and have made new allegations and public statements regarding Mr. Biden's confidential tax return information that were not previously included in.
their transcripts before the Committee on Ways and Means.
The Associated Press reports that Hunter Biden's suit says
the IRS hasn't done enough to halt the airing of his personal information.
It seeks to force compliance with federal tax and privacy laws
and damages of $1,000 for every unauthorized disclosure.
Hunter's lawsuit comes just days after he was indicted
on three drug-related gun charges, as we reported on last week,
show. We will keep you updated on this story. The U.S. Senate will no longer have a dress code.
Axios reports that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York,
directed the Senate's sergeant-at-arms to no longer enforce the Chamber's informal dress code
for its members. Schumer told Axios in a statement that senators are able to choose
what they wear on the Senate floor. I will continue to wear a suit.
Townhall.com editor and Fox News contributor Katie Pavlitch posted on X, formerly known as Twitter,
that Schumer proves once again he is an absolutely horrible majority leader.
What a disgrace and disrespect to the institution.
Get dressed for work people. It's not that hard.
The Daily Wires Michael Knowles also weighed in, posting on X,
the senator from Pennsylvania is so incapacitated that his colleagues changed Senate rules,
rather than even attempt to have him dress like an adult.
Knowles is referring to Pennsylvania Democratic Senator John Federman,
who often wears shorts and sweatshirts.
Five Americans and five Iranians have been freed
following a deal negotiated between the Biden administration and Tehran.
The Biden administration also approved the release of $6 billion of Iranian oil revenue
as part of the deal.
President Biden issued a statement today saying,
today five innocent Americans who were in prison in Iran are finally coming home.
Biden went on to say, reuniting wrongfully detained Americans with their loved ones has been a
priority for my administration since day one. We have now brought home dozens of our fellow
citizens, including from Afghanistan, Burma, Haiti, Russia, Rwanda, Venezuela, West Africa,
and more locations globally. Still, too many remain unjustly held in Russia, Venezuela,
Syria, and elsewhere around the world. Not everyone was on board with the deal, however.
Earlier today, Arkansas Republican Senator Tom Cotton said on X, that two of the five Iranians
released as part of this terrible deal will stay in the U.S. Joe Biden's embarrassing appeasement
not only makes Iran stronger, it makes America less safe. Republican Tennessee Senator
Marsha Blackburn also weighed in, saying on X, on the anniversary of 9-11, Joe Biden
handed over $6 billion to Iran.
Under this administration, our enemies are getting stronger.
The Defense Department recently clarified its gender-neutral language policy.
The Heritage Foundation's Dakota Wood and Cooley Stimson previously wrote for the Daily Signal
that on September 1st, we exposed the little-noticed update to the Defense Department's
manual of military decorations and awards, DOD Joint Decorations and Awards.
Wood and Stimson also wrote,
The change effective August 7th
required the six top joint awards
to use the nonsensical and grammatically incorrect word
themselves instead of the pronouns himself or herself
for each award.
Just last week, the Daily Caller News Foundation
reported that a defense official told the outlet
that the policy incorporating gender neutral language
into award citations
will be amended to clarify
that it does not ban using him
himself or herself. The official told DCNF that the change in the DoD manual was not intended to
restrict the use of the citation pronouns. However, in order to avoid confusion in the future,
we are adding a clarifying comment that themselves can be replaced with himself or herself as
appropriate. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will be visiting the U.S. this week,
starting tomorrow. The New York Times reports that Zalunsky, who spoke to a joint session of
Congress last December, we'll attend the UN General Assembly meeting and then travel to the
nation's capital to visit the White House and meet with congressional leaders.
Zelensky's visit comes after President Joe Biden asked Congress for an additional $24 billion
in funding for Ukraine last month.
The Washington Examiner reported today that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from
California, said Republicans in the House don't have plans to include the Ukraine aid
in their proposed stopgap spending bill that is making its way through the lower chamber.
We will, of course, keep you updated on Zelensky's visit.
And that's going to do it for today's episode.
