Conditions apply, details online. President Joe Biden delivered a speech in Normandy today that bore a striking resemblance to President Reagan's 1984 Normandy speech.
Starting point is 00:00:18 I'm Virginia Allen, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Friday, June 7. Today marked the fifth day of Hunter Biden's federal gun trial in Delaware. Hunter Biden is facing federal charge. charges for purchasing a gun while actively using drugs and allegedly lying about it on a form when he purchased a gun. The prosecution rested its case against Hunter today and after the prosecution rested, the defense called Hunter Biden's 30-year-old daughter Naomi to testify. Fox News described Naomi's testimony as emotional. Fox reports that under the cross-examination, Naomi was asked by prosecutor Leo Wise if she knew her father had been doing drugs. Naomi replied, yes, I knew that he was
Starting point is 00:01:12 struggling with addiction. And she added, after my uncle died, things got bad. She was then asked if she had ever seen her father using drugs. Naomi said, no, I never saw him use. Naomi was reportedly crying when she left the courtroom and hugged her father. Jill Biden was back in the courtroom today, along with the president's sister, Valerie Biden-Owens. Hunter may testify, in his own case next week, but that's yet to be determined. If convicted, the hunter could face up to 25 years in prison. The latest jobs report was released today. About 272,000 jobs were added to the U.S. economy in May. This is an improvement from the prediction that had estimated there would be 185,000 new jobs in May. Even with the new jobs, though, we did see a slight increase in the unemployment
Starting point is 00:02:04 from 3.9% in April to 4% in May. President Biden celebrated these latest job numbers with a post on X today. The president said, on my watch, 15.6 million more Americans have the dignity and respect that comes with a job. And unemployment has been at or below 4% for 30 months. And Biden pledged that he will keep fighting to lower costs for families. But Heritage Foundation economist E.J. and Tony said today's number of are not worth the significant celebration.
Starting point is 00:02:37 Antonio joined CNBC today and said millions of Americans remain unemployed. And Tony also raised concerns over the accuracy of the Bureau of Labor Statistics or BLS job numbers. Well, the reason the unemployment rate is so low is because there's over 5 million missing workers who don't have a job but aren't being counted as unemployed. That's according to BLS's own figures. And the weakness that we're seeing in the household survey began a couple of years ago, and that has continued to now. And we see this massive divergence between the two surveys, the survey of businesses and the survey of households. A lot of that has to do with people taking multiple jobs. But it also seems like there's something seriously wrong with the BLS's birth death model, which continues to add jobs, which frankly aren't there.
Starting point is 00:03:26 You can look at the quarterly census, for example, and you can see that last year, about a quarter of, quarter of all the jobs we thought were added never existed. And now estimates from Bloomberg, as well as the Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank, confirmed that. While part-time jobs are being added to the economy, the Heritage Foundation reports that full-time jobs are not being added. Next week, the Federal Reserve is planning to vote on interest rates. And even though the European Central Bank just lowered its interest rates this week, rates are not yet expected to be cut here in the States. President Biden is still in France. He gave a speech in Normandy yesterday on the 80th anniversary of D-Day,
Starting point is 00:04:06 and he gave a second speech today, calling on Americans to recommit to democracy and urge support for Ukraine. Biden said during his speech today that the Rangers who stormed the beaches of Normandy would want the U.S. to stand for freedom today per MSNBC. Does anyone doubt that they would want America to stand up against Putin? aggression here in Europe today. They stormed the beaches alongside their allies. Does anyone believe these Rangers would want America to go alone today? They fought to vanquish a hateful ideology in the 30s and 40s. Does anyone doubt they wouldn't move heaven and earth to vanquish hateful ideologies of today? These Rangers put mission and country above themselves. Does anyone believe They would exact any less from every American today.
Starting point is 00:05:02 Biden delivered the remarks in the exact same location that Reagan delivered his D-Day speech in 1984. The Biden administration was clearly trying to draw a parallel between the two leaders. Biden's speech bore a striking resemblance to President Ronald Reagan's speech. And some conservative groups and pundits like Young America's Foundation and Clay Travis criticized Biden for plagiarizing Reagan's speech. The Biden administration has indicted a doctor after he blew the whistle on sex change procedures against minors. Dr. A. Tom Heim joined us here on the Daily Signal podcast back in March and shared his story.
Starting point is 00:05:44 In 2022, Texas took steps to stop gender treatments on children. And Texas Children's Hospital in Houston told the public that they were not doing treatments on minors anymore. But in reality, they hadn't stopped. and Dr. Heim blew the whistle on the situation and alerted the public that the Children's Hospital was continuing with the procedures. Fast forward to June of 2023, and federal agents showed up at Dr. Heim's home. They told him that he was a potential leaker, and the federal agents served him a notice of a criminal investigation. Christopher Rufo, is the journalist who first broke the story and brought Dr. Heim's story into the public's attention.
Starting point is 00:06:25 And Rufo reported that now two years after Dr. Hime blew the whistle, U.S. Marshals showed up at Himes' home. They summoned him to court, according to Rufo, to face an indictment on four felony counts of violating the Health Insurance, Portability and Accountability Act, also known as HIPAA. Heim has been told to appear on Monday, and he will learn more about the charges against him then. One of Himes' attorneys, Marcella Burke, told Rufo that the doctor is eager to get to the trial so that he was told. that he can share his side of the story. Heim's attorney says that she's confident about the case. Stay tuned. And be sure to check out today's show notes
Starting point is 00:07:03 if you want to catch that conversation that we had here on the podcast with Dr. Heim and Marsh. As has become tradition here on the Daily Signal podcast on Friday, we're ending the week with a movie review. Godzilla minus one released at the end of 2023. It's rated PG-13. What separates this film from all of the other, Godzilla movies.
Starting point is 00:07:26 Here with us to talk about the movie to give a film review is movie expert Jim Carapano, who is also an expert in national security and foreign policy challenges here at the Heritage Foundation. Jim, tell us, why watch another Godzilla movie? Well, first of all, you can still watch this. It's just moved to Netflix. It's the best Godzilla movie since the original. And it really gets to the essence of why we like monster movies.
Starting point is 00:07:51 It has nothing to do with the monster. it has everything to do with the humans and how they respond to that. And this film is really about people dealing with World War II, the guilt of the war in the aftermath. It is awesome. It's the best film since the original. So you know there were two originals. One was actually done in Japan, which is really about kind of we poor victims, you know, America drops the atom bomb and then Godzilla wakes up Godzilla so, you know, Japan gets hammered twice.
Starting point is 00:08:19 The American version, they thought, was like two Japanese. so they took out stuff about blaming the Americans for the bomb. They added in Raymond Burr. They just cut him into the movie as an American. So a lot of Americans have actually not seen the original film. They're both great. The music's amazing. The story's great because it's about people, which is this.
Starting point is 00:08:37 But what makes this movie also amazing is it actually is a lot about geopolitics because the hero of the film who is a kamikaze pilot who survives World War II. That's an interesting oxymoran in itself. His guilt, but also how the Japanese is. people respond to the monster and essentially they kind of take care of it themselves. So they're so they're not victims. They own their future and they fight back to save their country. And this is about geopolitics because this is a movie about modern Japan and how it is moving past
Starting point is 00:09:09 the history of World War II and the notion that Japan must become a confident, self-reliant country and because it has to face the threat of China. It's about raising family, which of course is a problem in Japan because of declining demographics. The value of family, the value of tradition, the value of patriotism and loving your country and defending your country. And it's all about people. Monster's not bad, but it's all about people. And it's actually a really super entertaining film to watch. I don't think I would have ever guessed that you could get that much out of a Godzilla movie.
Starting point is 00:09:45 This is fantastic. It's a great family film. It's great for family. It's got great family values. The movie is Godzilla minus 1. How would you rate the production value, Joe? Oh, this is a really super well. And here's what I would do, seriously.
Starting point is 00:09:58 Watch it. You can watch it with the English stubs. Don't do that. Put the Chinese on and put on the English subtitles because you should never watch a Japanese film with like the English dubbing thing because you lose so much about the feeling of the film. So watch it with the subtitles just as good.
Starting point is 00:10:16 Okay, watch it with the subtitles. Got it. The movie is Godzilla. minus one. Check it out this weekend if you have a little free time. Jim, thank you so much for your time.
