A Maryland sheriff told the Daily Signal that open border policies are to blame for the murder of an innocent woman.
I'm Elizabeth Troutman, and this is the Daily Signal top news for Monday, June 17th.
The suspected murderer of Maryland mother of five, Rachel Morin, was arrested Friday on charges of rape and murder.
23-year-old Victor Antonio Martinez Hernandez is an illegal alien from El Salvador.
He was arrested in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on charges of raping and murdering, Rachel Morin.
The illegal alien crossed the southern border in February 23.
Six months later, in August 2020,
Hernandez is suspected of attacking Rachel Morin
while she exercised on the M.A. and PA Heritage Trail in Bel Air, Maryland,
about 30 miles northeast of Baltimore.
Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gawler told the Daily Signal
the criminal was arrested after a 10-month investigation.
Gawler said he hopes he will pose a threat to no one else for the rest of his days.
He said, in a world of a billion people, we were able to narrow it down to a business in a barstool in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he was arrested by that police department.
The sheriff said this is the second time in two years that a Harford County woman has been killed by an illegal immigrant from El Salvador.
Here's part of my interview with him this morning.
We need to secure the border.
We need to stop the flow of drugs and stop the flow of individuals who are coming in with an intent to commit.
crimes, to take lives, to not contribute to what makes our country so great.
And that is that we are a wonderful place and a great melting of so many different cultures.
But there needs to be a legal pathway to citizenship.
And that currently does not exist.
Gawler said the majority of people trying to enter the country are not criminals, but good
people looking for better lives.
He told the Daily Signal that President Joe Biden's open border policies are the ones causing
criminals to mix with those good people.
Here's more of our conversation.
We need to have a fair, unified system that helps us screen for those who want to do us harm.
And Rachel's life should not have been taken in this manner by this person.
Biden needs to put forth a true bipartisan lead as the president of our country, according to
Galler.
He said the border was much more secure during the Trump administration.
In addition to being accused of murdering Rachel Morin, Martinez-Hernandez is accused of
killing a woman from El Salvador and attacking a nine-year-old girl and her mother during a home
invasion in Los Angeles last year. Guller said,
He came here to flee accountability for committing a heinous murder there and was allowed to walk
into our country or however he got in. And I still fear that we're going to stumble across
someone else who has been touched by this guy's violence. But he took Rachel's life and, of course,
he committed that violent act out in Los Angeles. That is the stuff that we need to
focus on when we're securing the border and make sure these kind of people don't make it in.
Maryland's Democratic governor, Wes Moore, joined the sheriff in calling for immigration reform
in response to Morin's death. Moore said, we have an immigration policy that needed to be dealt with
and was not. The consequences then fall on us as the leaders of our individualized jurisdictions.
The U.S. Surgeon General is calling for a warning label on social media platforms. The Surgeon General,
Vivek H. Murthy, penned in New York Times' offices.
bed on the dangers of social media. He wrote, the mental health crisis among young people is an
emergency, and social media has emerged as an important contributor. Adolescents who spend more than
three hours a day on social media face double the risk of anxiety and depression symptoms,
and the average daily use in this age group, as of summer 2023, was 4.8 hours. Additionally,
nearly half of adolescents say social media makes them feel worse about their bodies. He called
Congress to take action to require health warning labels. He said, it is time to require a
Surgeon General's warning label on social media platforms stating that social media is associated
with significant mental health harms for adolescents. The Surgeon General also wrote,
evidence from tobacco studies show that warning labels can increase awareness and change behavior.
President Joe Biden said he expects the winner of this year's presidential election will have
the chance to fill two vacancies on the Supreme Court at a fundraising.
event on Saturday in Los Angeles. Biden said the decision would be one of the scariest parts if
former President Donald Trump was re-elected. Biden said, the next president is likely to have two
new Supreme Court nominees. Two more. He's already appointed two that have been very negative in terms
of rights of individuals. Trump named three justices during his term, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh,
and Amy Coney-Barritt. Trump appointments are responsible for securing the conservative majority on the court
in overturning landmark abortion case, Roe v. Wade.
Biden did not explain how the two vacancies on the court would originate.
On Monday morning, the Democratic governor of Maryland
pardoned more than 175,000 marijuana convictions, Axios reported.
Wes Moore said the pardons of around 100,000
are the most far-reaching and aggressive executive actions
among officials nationwide.
Moore is one of 10 governors to issue pardons for marijuana convictions.
marijuana became legal in the state of Maryland last year.
Moore said on X that he was humbled to make history with the pardon.
He said,
This morning, with deep pride and soberness,
I will pardon over 175,000 convictions related to the possession of cannabis and cannabis paraphernalia.
He added,
this administration has stood up to what many believe is one of the most equitable and efficient
adult market cannabis rollouts of any state in history.
And yet we know that legalization does not turn back the clock.
on decades of harm caused by the war on drugs.
More continued,
we cannot celebrate the benefits of legalization
while forgetting the consequences of criminalization.
And that'll do it for today's episode.
