Americans are casting their votes in the closest presidential election in modern history.
I'm Elizabeth Mitchell, and this is the Daily Signal's Top News in 10 for Tuesday, November 5th.
It's election night and Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are neck in
the polls. Polls indicate Trump and Harris are nearly tied in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada,
North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Within each swing state, several
counties are also too close to call, and they could be the deciding factors in who wins each state.
Control of the House of Representatives in the Senate also hangs in the balance this election,
with close races in several states expected to determine whether Congress will flip for the next two
years and if one party might enjoy control of both chambers.
The Daily Signal's political editor Bradley Devlin is here to discuss. Thanks for joining us.
Thanks for having me. What are you seeing happening in the swing states tonight?
Who the heck knows? I think.
that we'll see a lot of unanswered questions come Wednesday morning. I don't think that this
election is over any time tonight. So maybe the best thing for your mental health and your
physical health is to go to bed at a reasonable hour and wake up and see just how the votes have
come in. Because there's some outstanding questions in places like Michigan, for example,
with new voting laws there. How exactly are they going to count the ballots? Is it going to be
a mix of election day in mail-in ballots coming in? Is it going to be more mail-in? And then
election day and then flip back to mail-in.
And of course, all this varies state by state.
So while some states we might have cleared the mail-in ballots quickly and then we get to election
day counts, it could flip back to counting, you know, extra mail-in ballots in Nevada, for example,
come Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.
So it's going to be nip and tuck, as you said in the introduction.
I think some key counties to keep an eye on in the state of Georgia, for example, DeKalb County.
That's going to see how President Trump is doing with young African-American voters, in particular, young African-American men.
That's a demographic that he's been targeting to eat away at some of the margins in urban areas for Democrats.
You have Nash County in North Carolina, which President Joe Biden won by only 120 votes in the 2020 election and Donald Trump won, I believe, by 85 in 2016, is the swingiest swing county that there is in the United States.
it might give us some indication of how voters are turning out across the country, not only in the swing states, but across the country.
If, you know, that county, that Nash County goes red for President Trump, you should feel good about not only a victory in North Carolina, but across the country as well.
Then you get to Yuma and Maricopa in Arizona, for example.
And while Maricopa County accounts for, I think, about two-thirds when you take the Phoenix metro area and its suburbs, it accounts for,
two-thirds of the state's vote, it's a margin that Trump can easily eat into from 2020 compared
to now, especially with the hot issues of this campaign cycle, namely immigration, the economy,
etc. So those things bode well for President Donald Trump, but a lot of outstanding questions.
You know, can he make inroads in the areas that he needs in Pennsylvania, right?
Will his margin in Butler County be bigger than it was in 2020, not only because the assassination
attempt that occurred there, but also that's just been a massive indicator for Republicans.
They need to make sure that on that western side of the state that they run up some big numbers
in suburban slash rural counties. So a lot of questions yet to be answered. I don't think we'll have
all the answers tonight. And I don't know if either candidate's going to be able to declare
victory tonight as much as they might want to. Who knows when we'll get those results. Now, when it
comes to the Senate, there are 33 seats up for regular election in 2024. Democratic.
Democrats currently hold a narrow majority in the Senate, but Republicans have an advantage this election cycle as Democrats are defending 23 of those seats and Republicans are only defending 11.
What do Republicans need to win the Senate?
Yeah, Republicans basically haven't knotted up 50-50 right now because Jim Justice, the Republican candidate for Senate in West Virginia, is basically a shoe in.
They need to pick up one more seat across a number of winnable elections for Republican Senate candidates.
That is Tim Sheehe in Montana.
That is Bernie Moreno in Ohio.
That is Kerry Lake in Arizona, Sam Brown in Nevada even.
So all these candidates have just as good as any to be that 51 senator for the Republicans.
And you might think, well, 51 senators, that's not a big majority, especially when you think about maybe some of the Senate conference is not truly conservative or whatever.
The big thing for Republicans is taking back the majority from Chuck Schumer.
You've raised some very interesting points.
How can our listeners keep up with the Daily Signals election night coverage for the rest of the evening?
Go to the website.
Check out Tony Kinnett's show.
It's going to be broadcasting not only online, but all over radio networks across the country.
So see if you can't tune into it there.
And as always, you know, we've got Rob Blewey, our fearless leader on merit tonight.
He'll be on air all night long with Dr. Phil's network.
And we also will have Virginia.
She's going to be down in Marlago on the ground at the Trump victory party.
I think they're calling it a victory party a little prematurely.
I don't know.
She's going to be at the party.
And so I'm going to be calling her every 30 minutes, I think, to say, what's the vibes, what's the vibes?
And if you want to know what those vibes are, check out what the Daily Signal is doing.
Awesome.
Thanks so much.
Thank you.
Police are boarding up D.C. ahead of potential violence in the aftermath of the election.
Law enforcement put up new security fencing around the White House,
Vice President Kamala Harris's residents, and both campaigns watch parties,
according to a report from Politico.
Alex Worley, a spokesperson for the Secret Service,
said in a statement that these enhancements are not in response to any specific issue,
but are part of wide-ranging public safety preparations for Tuesday's election.
The Secret Service confirmed to Axios the security enhancements have been made to the Capitol
in preparation for Congress's scheduled certification of presidential electors on January 6th.
Several D.C. businesses are boarded up as well, including McDonald's, Pete's Coffee,
the U.S. Post Office, CNN's office, Panera Bread, and more.
Local police and National Guard units across the country are preparing to respond to any violence.
Axios reported, National Guard units are on standby in Washington State, Oregon, and Nevada.
According to the National Guard Bureau, the National Guard has mobilized more than 250 personnel in over a dozen states to assist with Election Day operations.
More than two dozen states have indicated they would be willing to send National Guard troops to Washington if requested after Election Day, according to Guard officials.
600 New York Times tech staffers went on strike this week and remain on strike on this election Tuesday.
The Tech Guild runs the New York Times website and posts all the election results in commentary,
so the strike could influence the New York Times' release of election night coverage.
The Tech Guild's members went on strike after not reaching a contract agreement after months of negotiation.
The Times Tech Guild wrote on X,
We are back out on the picket line today.
We know this is a hard day to be on strike for our members, but we want to be clear.
We are here because of the decisions of New York Times.
management. Here's a clip of the strike.
A Times Power, push out the power,
what's time the power? A Times software engineer on strike told Fox News Digital that a
presidential election is the Times peak traffic when we see the most people coming
to the site. She said that's why months ago we gave management a deadline saying we
wanted a contract by the election or were going on strike. The engineer continued, they
wouldn't give us what we were demanding and we've already made enough compromises. We're done compromising,
so we're out here until we get a fair contract. The Washington Post reported that other New York
Times Newsroom members have encouraged management to reach a deal with the tech staffers. The pledge says,
we can't do our jobs without the Tech Guild. Can you imagine if our election needle didn't work,
the app didn't open or the homepage went down? The election needle shows the likelihood of
Donald Trump or Kamala Harris winning the election.
The walkout could jeopardize the tool.
Now let's hit our news flashes of the day.
The Daily Caller reported that several left-wing district attorneys could find themselves out of work after Tuesday's election, including in three California jurisdictions.
With many progressive prosecutors on the ballot this election, polling and fundraising data shows that voters are rejecting soft-on-crime policies across the nation with their ballots and wallets.
according to multiple reports.
Elon Musk warned Monday that if Kamala Harris wins the presidential election, she might shut down X.
Here he is.
I think if Trump wins, we'll see probably most of the boycott lived.
But if Kamala wins, we'll see that boycott gets stronger.
And they'll frigging shut down.
There's no way that the sort of Kamala puppet regime would allow X to exist.
You really think that they'll be able to shut it down, though?
Is there a pathway to that?
Yes.
What would they do?
Well, I mean, they can just, they can stick the DOJ on, you know, and say like, you know,
they've had this whole thing about like hate speech, misinformation or whatever, except
that they're the ones pushing the misinformation.
But that doesn't stop them from filing massive, you know, lawsuits and using the DOJ.
That'll do it for this episode of Top News Intent.
