Starting point is 00:00:00 Mark your calendars for September 10th. That's the only confirmed presidential debate right now. I'm Virginia Allen, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Friday, August 9. Vice President Kamala Harris reportedly won't agree to a Fox News debate with former President Donald Trump on September 4th. That's according to ABC Senior White House correspondent Selena Wang. Harris will, however, debate Trump on September 10th, and that debate will be hosted by ABC News. Wang says the Harris campaign is willing to have conversations about more debates following that September 10th one. This news comes after Trump's press conference yesterday, during which he called on Harris to participate in three debates. Trump said that the first one should be hosted by Fox on September 4th, followed by the September 10th debate and finally a September 25th debate.
Starting point is 00:01:02 But for right now, we only have confirmation on the September 10th debate. Podcaster Joe Rogan informally endorsed independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. on his show yesterday. The Joe Rogan experience is the number one podcast on Spotify. And during a conversation with Bob Glyman yesterday, Rogan said that Kennedy stands out from both Trump and Harris. That's just what they do. That's politics. They do it on the left. They do it on the right. They gaslight you. They manipulate you. They promote narratives. And the only one is not, doing that is Robert F. Kennedy Jr. You a fan? Yeah, I am a fan. Yeah, he's the only one that makes sense to me. He's the only one that he doesn't attack people. He attacks actions and ideas,
Starting point is 00:01:48 but he's much more reasonable and intelligent. I mean, the guy was an environmental attorney and cleaned up the East River. He's a legitimate guy. Kennedy responded to Rogan on X, writing, from one legitimate guy to another. Thank you, Joe Rogan for always putting substance first. And Kennedy added, this election is not about left versus right. It's about Americans of Goodwill coming together to end the tyranny of corruption in our system so that we can once again have a government and economy that works for all people. Let's head overseas for a moment where the Israeli Youth Ultimate Frisbee team has been banned from competing in a major competition in Belgium. The Israeli teams traveled from Israel for,
Starting point is 00:02:38 the competition and arrived in Belgium on Monday. They were set to compete in the under 17 European Youth Ultimate Championship this week. The organizers of the tournament, the European Ultimate Federation, had expressed some concerns over pro-Palestine protests that was even before the Israeli team arrived in Belgium, and these security concerns had led to an agreement for the Israeli team to compete on a different field that was about 25 minutes south of where the other team. teams were playing and viewed as safer. But early on Tuesday morning, the field complex where the Israeli team was supposed to compete was vandalized with red paint and anti-Semitic graffiti. That's when the European Ultimate Federation told the Israeli team that they were not allowed to
Starting point is 00:03:25 compete in the tournament or even attend because of a risk of violent demonstrations. I spoke with one of the coaches of the team, Daniel Ben David, and he said that he and his team are broken-hearted that they're not able to compete. And he told me that his team felt safe, competing even given those security risks and wish that they would have been given the chance to do so. We have a security. And our security, like, you know, Israel,
Starting point is 00:03:54 we have great intelligence, we have great security. And they check everything. And they told us, the minute we feel something is wrong, even if it's in the middle of a game, we will take you from there and we will not come back. And we told that to the organizers, and they still did this. Ben David told me that the team of 16 young men that he coaches has been playing together for three years,
Starting point is 00:04:16 and they were ready and feeling confident that they could win this championship this year. He noted that Israel has been competing in this tournament for over 20 years, and other nations participating, including Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Switzerland, and Sweden, many of those teams have expressed their sympathy to Israel, They've reached out to say that what they see is happening is unfair and wrong. Because the community is really standing for us. It's just the organizers and the city of Ghent, which are anti-Semitic. Ghent Belgium is about an hour from Brussels and is where the tournament is taking place this week.
Starting point is 00:04:55 The Israeli team is still in Belgium, and I spoke with one of the moms that's traveling with the team, whose son plays on the team, Marina Gelfand Kaplan, and she said that it's been really hard. on the players to not be allowed to compete. They're devastated. You know, it's their sportsmanship, I think, that holds them together. But they're devastated, disappointed, heartbroken. Coach Ben David says, now they're working to take legal action against the city of Ghent and the organizers of the tournament. The Daily Signal did reach out to the mayor of Ghent and the mayor of Ghent and the city.
Starting point is 00:05:38 the European Ultimate Federation for comment, but didn't hear back. It's a rainy Friday night in some parts of the country as Tropical Storm Derby continues to peter out on the East Coast. So if you're looking for maybe a good movie to watch on a rainy Friday night like this one, my colleague Tony Kennett is going to try to convince you to see the movie Twister, not the new one, the original. So last Friday, we talked here on the show and reviewed the movie Twisters, the new movie that's out in theaters right now. And I have since seen that film,
Starting point is 00:06:16 and I can confirm that it is solid, in my opinion. And it also is surprisingly clean. But the 1996 original is also gaining a lot of attention right now, since the new one is performing really well in box offices. So that original film was also rated PG-13, and it has just under a two-hour running time. So Tony, I would love to get your thoughts. First, thanks for being here. Can you compare without, I mean, I don't want to give any major spoilers since, you know, the new one is out and also a lot of people like me have not seen the original. But give us a little bit of a comparison in the premises between this new film and the original. So the best way to describe Twister is if you've ever tried perhaps a packaged meal of some sort, maybe a food that you've never tried before.
Starting point is 00:07:08 you weren't really going to, you know, you didn't have an idea of how it would taste, but you tried it and you liked it. And then your friend comes up to you and says, well, if you like that packaged version that, you know, you got from the store, wait until you try the homemade, home style meal version that my mother makes.
Starting point is 00:07:26 That is what Twister is compared to Twisters. Really? You think the original is that much better. It's, oh, it is not even comparable. Wow. Plot is, you know, funny. It's not meant to be the most serious movie of all time, but it does still grip you. It's, again, kind of a very funny but weather style take on a horror movie.
Starting point is 00:07:48 It is just phenomenal. It has a wonderful cast. Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jamie Gertz, you've got so many stellar people. And I have to say, the cinematography, despite having some CG in a few places, that is just a touch dated. I mean, oh man, the acting and the way the movie is set is just stellar. I mean, it's a cult classic for a reason. Okay. Well, then if you're saying that the original is that much better, if folks haven't seen the new one or the original, what's the order you should be watching these then? Well, it's not really necessary that you watch one before the other because the sequel
Starting point is 00:08:33 is only kind of loosely based, loosely referencing the first one, although it does definitely reference the first one. In fact, the Twisters spends the entire movie setting up a character reveal from the first movie that never actually happens that we found out after that movie came out. But Twister is such a good movie that upon finding out my brother-in-law had not seen it after we saw Twisters, we went to the house. We got a brand new TV. So he could see it on a large screen for the very very,
Starting point is 00:09:03 first time and he loved it. Wow, that's commitment, Tony. I appreciate that level of commitment to an OG film. Now, I will say the Rotten Tomatoes score for the original, specifically the audience score is 58%, which is pretty low. And the new movie has an audience score of 91%. So I don't know if that's just an indicator of maybe we're less critical about movies now. Or, yeah, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:09:30 But I'm going to have to test this out and see for myself. Which is the better movie? It depends on what you're going for. If you're going for, a lot of people were expecting a very serious weather movie when they originally went to see it. And Twister is not where you have the scientist bent over the computer tracking like the day after tomorrow, for example, is a weather movie that is taken so seriously. And this is about a bunch of storm chasers. And if you have ever actually spent any time around storm chasers, which being from the Midwest, I have to say that I have.
Starting point is 00:10:05 There is a level of of cavalier goofiness that you, of course, see in Twisters, since I know that you've seen that one. That is, it really plays well here. And may I also say, the music scoring of this movie has no business being as phenomenal as it is. This is great, great music. I will absolutely agree with you there. Tony, for folks who have enjoyed our conversation and they want to hear, more from you. Tell us how they can find the Tony Kennettcast. You can find the Tony Kennedcast over at the Daily Signal who now nationally syndicates it. So head over there, watch the live stream. It's on 7 p.m.
