Starting point is 00:00:00 The White House is working on a new rescissions package that includes cuts to education funding. President Trump met with the President of the Philippines today and announced a new trade deal. And here in Washington, D.C., the Epstein Files continue to cause a bit of a stir and some drama. I'm Virginia Allen in for Tony Kinnett. It is Wednesday, July 22nd, and this is the Daily's top news intent. The White House plans to introduce a new rescissions package that will claw back federal education funding. The Daily Signal's White House correspondent Elizabeth Mitchell broke this news on Tuesday afternoon. After talking with sources that are familiar with the situation, the Trump administration has repeatedly discussed needed reforms to education and to the education department department.
Starting point is 00:00:51 And has discussed eliminating the department altogether. Trump signed an executive order back in March that authorized secretary of the Department of Education, Linda McMahon, to do everything in her power to dismantle the department. The department has already laid off 1,300 career employees. Right now, it's not clear what this rescission package will cut from the previously approved education funding. What we do know is that the revision package will also include cuts that extend beyond just the Department of Education. White House Deputy Chief of Staff James Blair told reporters on Friday that the next rescission package can be expected soon. Blair said, we've got a number of items we're looking at also. obviously talking to the senators too.
Starting point is 00:01:37 They're going through the appropriations process. We don't know what's important to them, but you know you'll obviously see that very soon. Congress passed Trump's first rescission's package last week. That package cut $9.4 billion in funding for public radio station NPR and PBS, as well as some foreign aid funding. This marks the first time in decades that Congress has approved a president's request to rescind previously authorized funds.
Starting point is 00:02:04 funding big moves in Washington, D.C. Speaking of big things happening in Washington, President Trump met with the president of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the White House on Tuesday. Trump announced a new trade deal between the two countries and said that the U.S. will impose a 19 percent tariff on goods from the Philippines. That is just a little bit lower than the anticipated 20 percent tariffs. Trump and Marcos spoke very positively of the relationship that their two nations share while sitting side by side in the Oval Office. Take a listen.
Starting point is 00:02:37 You want to say it's an honor to have you. We're going to talk about trade today, and we're very close to finishing a trade deal, big trade deal actually, and we do a lot of business with you. It's a lot of income coming in for both groups, but I was surprised to see the kind of numbers. They're very big, and they're going to get bigger under what we're doing and what we're proposing. Of course, we're all very happy to be here to once again reaffirm the very strong ties between the Philippines and the United States, ties that they go back over a hundred years.
Starting point is 00:03:11 And considering the context in which we live these days, especially in my part of the world, this has evolved into as important a relationship as is possible to have. We must remember that the United States is our only treaty partner in the Philippines. And that has, that has stood us in good stead over the years.
Starting point is 00:03:38 Trump took questions on various topics in the Oval Office. During that meeting, one of the big topics to come up was the Epstein Files. In the latest on the Epstein File news, President Trump said it seems appropriate for the Justice Department to contact Epstein's associate Galane Maxwell. Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in prison back in 2022 for conspiring with Jeffrey Epstein to sexually abysm, to sexually abuse minors.
Starting point is 00:04:05 Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche says he has plans to meet with Maxwell and ask her about potential other sexual abusers. The news of the possible new questioning of Maxwell comes amid renewed interest over Epstein and the alleged Epstein files. Blanche said in a statement that was shared on X, this Department of Justice does not shy away from uncomfortable truths, nor from the responsibility to pursue justice wherever the facts may lead. Blanche said President Trump has told us to release all credible evidence.
Starting point is 00:04:40 If Gleine Maxwell has information about anyone who has committed crimes against victims, the FBI and the DOJ will hear what she has to say. And speaking of Maxwell, a House Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee voted on Tuesday to subpoena Maxwell, the vote gained support from some Republicans and Democrats. House Speaker Mike Johnson has opposed motions from Democrats and some Republicans to try to compel the White House to release information on Epstein. The Daily signals George Codwell asked Johnson, if there is more that the House Judiciary Committee and House Oversight Committee can do to bring the truth about Epstein and those who may have been involved with him to light. Take a listen. Of releasing documents, isn't there more that the Judiciary Committee or Oversight can do to subpoena? accomplices of Epstein and get their thoughts? There is, and they may.
Starting point is 00:05:35 So we'll see how that develops. We've got to allow them time to do their work. Are you sure? Is this working as a lot of taking place on the local level in California? Johnson says Democrats are seeking to prioritize the Epstein investigation. Epstein drama appears to have led House leadership to announce that it will go on recess one early this week. The House was scheduled to begin its long August recess on Thursday, but has moved that up to
Starting point is 00:06:00 Wednesday. Johnson has made it clear that he does not want members of Congress to act in haste on this issue. Johnson told the press on Tuesday, we want maximum transparency. We also understand the other part of that duty is we have to protect innocent victims. In a rare public statement, former President Barack Obama has responded to Trump's accusations against him in the 2016 Russiagate situation. Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, released a significant amount of intelligence last week that appears to suggest that the Obama administration was involved in claims that Russia influenced the 2016 election in favor of Trump. Now, Trump claimed on Tuesday that Obama was the ringleader of Russia Gate. Obama spokesman Patrick Rodenbush issued a statement saying, out of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not need. normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a
Starting point is 00:07:04 response, but these claims are outrageous enough to merit one. Roden Bush continued, these bizarre allegations are ridiculous and weak attempt at distraction. Nothing in the document issued last week undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election, but did not success. manipulate any votes. These findings were affirmed in a 2020 report by the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee led by then chairman Marco Rubio. With that, we're going to leave it right there for today.
