Starting point is 00:00:01 Donald Trump was dealt a new indictment. I'm Elizabeth Mitchell, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Wednesday, August 28th. Special counsel, Jack Smith, filed a new indictment against former president Donald Trump on Tuesday, but it contains no new charges. Smith's new indictment is a revision of his previous four charges that accused Trump of interfering in the 2020 election after losing. Trump pleaded not guilty to all four of those original charges. The prosecutor narrowed his approach after the Supreme Court ruled. that former presidents have broad immunity from criminal prosecution.
Starting point is 00:00:47 Heritage Foundation legal experts John Malcolm and Zach Smith say the amended indictment is simply an attempt to get in front of likely legal arguments from Trump's legal team, asking Judge Tanya Chetkin to dismiss all or certain of the Washington charges against him on this basis. In his Washington, D.C. case against Trump, which was related to Trump's conduct in the aftermath of 2020 presidential election, Smith on Tuesday sought and received a superseding indictment. Smith filed his brief with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, asking that the court overturned Judge Eileen Cannon's dismissal of his indictment in the classified documents case against Trump.
Starting point is 00:01:22 Cannon dismissed that indictment because she found that Smith had been unconstitutionally appointed to his position and as a result did not up the power to bring the indictment at all. The charge focuses on Trump's role as a political candidate seeking re-election, rather than as the president at the time. The indictment says Trump's actions were motivated by his personal desire to maintain power, rather than his capacity as a president. Trump's running mate, Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio, called the new indictment a classic example of lipstick on a pig. Trump called the indictment ridiculous in a truth social post and said it should be dismissed immediately. Israeli troops launched
Starting point is 00:02:01 a large-scale military operation Wednesday in the West Bank. Terrorist organization Hamas said 10 of its fighters were killed. In what Israel called a counterterrorism operation, the Israeli military launched a series of coordinated raids against four cities involving air strikes, ground forces, and bulldozers. The Israeli army said it killed nine Palestinian terrorists. They reported no Israeli casualties. This comes a day after Israeli soldiers rescued a 52-year-old hostage from an underground tunnel in southern Gaza. Two days ago, Israel and Lebanese military group Hezbollah had their biggest round of cross-border strikes since the war began. Israel struck southern Lebanon and Hezbollah launched rockets and drones at Israel. Israel said the attack was a preemptive strike to prevent a larger escalation.
Starting point is 00:02:47 Hillary Clinton called former President Donald Trump disrespectful after he went to Arlington National Cemetery to lay a wreath at soldiers' graves. Clinton said this after NPR reported that two members of Donald Trump's campaign staff had a verbal and physical altercation with a cemetery official. Clinton said, has any presidential candidate shown less respect to our veterans than Donald Trump? Trump visited Arlington Monday to mark the three-year-old. anniversary of the Kabul airport attack that killed 13 U.S. service members amid the Biden administration's withdrawal from Afghanistan. Trump's campaign communications director Stephen Chung denied there was any physical altercation. He said in a statement, the fact is that a private photographer was permitted on the premises and for whatever reason, unnamed individual, clearly suffering from a mental
Starting point is 00:03:31 health episode, decided to physically block members of President Trump's team during a very solemn ceremony. Two congressmen are demanding answers about if diversity, equity, and inclusion measures in the U.S. Coast Guard are undermining readiness. The Daily Signals, Bradley Devlin, broke this story. Thanks so much for joining us. Of course. Representatives Matt Gates and Eli Crane wrote to the Coast Guard about their concerns with, quote-unquote, indoctrination training in the military branch. What does the letter say?
Starting point is 00:04:02 The letter obtained by the Daily Signal reads in part, quote, we have heard from service members concerned with trainings and events they believe to be extraneous to mission critical tasks, specifically sexual orientation and gender identity, inclusivity training programs. The letter later continues that USCG has reported that it is about 4,800 members short and has missed its recruiting targets for the past four fiscal years. Now, this is a giant problem for the Coast Guard because it ends up being a vicious cycle where the lack of recruitment leads to more stress testing on the sailors, which leads to distractions
Starting point is 00:04:45 from mission critical tasks and the inability to continue to do the mission necessary. And those missions are often seizing drugs that are coming across the border from Mexico, but on the coasts. That's pretty scary to hear. can you describe what the Coast Guard DEI initiatives in question are? One of the DEI initiatives pushed by the Coast Guard was a transgender shipmates inclusion training. And this was a flyer promoted through official Coast Guard channels per Craning Gates that says the training is for people who want to be an ally to trans people and understand the trans experience
Starting point is 00:05:23 or if a sailor themselves have questions about their gender identity. Wow. Incidents like this aren't new. Are they, where else are we seeing DEI in the military? Well, of course, you've heard Mark Millie in the past, who's now retired, that sailors and service members are struggling with their white rage. But it's not only in the armed services run by Mark Millie and his ilk, but in the schools run by the military on bases around the world, a July report revealed that Pentagon schools
Starting point is 00:05:53 were guilty of pushing DEI propaganda on the children of armed service members stationed abroad. So as President Donald Trump likes to say at his rallies, the military itself is not woke, and it is the brass that is the problem. And Crane and Gates' letters seemed to testify to that fact because they're receiving this information from sailors and service members in the Coast Guard. As this moves forward, I think you'll see more challenges to this type of indoctrination and this type of training in federal settings in. military settings because it's a fast track through the court process. I think that they can provide the kind of check on the liberal brass at the military if we decide to be more forceful in nipping this type of training in the butt. We'll be sure to keep following your reporting on this. Thanks so much. Thanks.
Starting point is 00:06:49 Kamala Harris's running mate, Sam Wals, has connections to a nonprofit that is tied to the Chinese Communist Party. The Daily Collar News Foundation first reported that the The Minnesota Governor has attended several events hosted by members of the Chinese American Association of Minnesota and related organizations. One of these events was a 2022 fundraiser for his gubernatorial campaign. The Chinese American Association of Minnesota was a host of the St. Paul branch of the Overseas Chinese Service Center program. The OCSC program is overseen for the Chinese government's United Front Work Department. The Daily Color News Foundation reported.
