Starting point is 00:00:01 I'm Virginia Allen, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Wednesday, March 6th. Here are today's headlines. Nikki Haley is officially exiting the race. Via Fox News, here's the former South Carolina governor's announcement. It is now up to Donald Trump to earn the votes of those in our party and beyond it who did not support him. And I hope he does that. At its best, politics is about bringing people into your cause. not turning them away, and our conservative cause badly needs more people.
Starting point is 00:00:49 This is now his time for choosing. I end my campaign with the same words I began it from the book of Joshua. I direct them to all Americans, but especially to so many of the women and girls out there who put their faith in our campaign. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid. Do not be discouraged, for God will be with you wherever you go. In this campaign, I have seen our country's greatness.
Starting point is 00:01:21 From the bottom of my heart, thank you, America. God bless you. Now, Haley did not endorse former President Donald Trump. And before Haley announced her decision to leave the race, Trump posted this on true social. He said, Nikki Haley got trounced last night, referring to Super Tuesday, in record. setting fashion, according to Trump. He continues despite the fact that Democrats, for reasons unknown, are allowed to vote in Vermont and various other Republican primaries. President Joe Biden praised Haley in a statement, on the other hand, per the Hill, saying Nikki Haley was willing to speak the
Starting point is 00:02:01 truth about Trump, about the chaos that always follows him, about his inability to see right from wrong, about his cowering before Vladimir Putin. And the president added, Donald Trump made it clear he doesn't want Nikki Haley's supporters. I want to be clear there's a place for them in my campaign. After yesterday's slew of primaries on Super Tuesday, Trump now has 995 delegates and Haley has 89. In related news, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. says that his presidential campaign has qualified for Nevada's general election ballot this November. Kennedy said in a Tuesday press release that today marks the end of the primary and the beginning of the general election. Kennedy also added nearly 70 percent of Americans don't want a Trump-Biden rematch from 2020.
Starting point is 00:02:56 They want to vote for someone who represents hope and healing for someone with an inspiring vision for America. Kennedy went on to say that he looks forward to taking on presidents Biden and Trump on the issues that matter most to Americans. from making housing and health care affordable to ending the forever wars and unraveling corporate capture of our government. On Tuesday, President Trump won 14 out of the 15 state primaries, GOP, primaries that is, and President Joe Biden won all 15 of his. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has officially endorsed former president Donald Trump for president.
Starting point is 00:03:38 Of course, McConnell recently announced he would be stepping down from his long. longtime leadership position as head of GOP Senate. In a statement, the Kentucky Republican said it is abundantly clear that former President Trump has earned the requisite support of Republican voters to be our nominee for President of the United States. It should come as no surprise that as nominee, he will have my support. McConnell also discussed what he and Trump had done during Trump's time as president, saying during his presidency, we work together to accomplish great things.
Starting point is 00:04:12 for the American people, including tax reform that supercharged our economy, and a generational change of our federal judiciary, most importantly, the Supreme Court. I look forward to the opportunity of switching from playing defense against the terrible policies the Biden administration has pursued to have sustained offense geared towards making a real difference in improving the lives of the American people. Well, House Speaker Mike Johnson also weighed in, on Super Tuesday, discussing the results, per the Hill, saying the race is set now. It will be a rematch, and we like that rematch. And from my perspective, I think President Trump, what his message is resonating with the American people,
Starting point is 00:04:59 because this is not an untested theory. We know that President Trump delivered, according to the House Speaker. Johnson endorsed Trump in November. New York Governor Kathy Hokel announced on Wednesday that she will deploy nearly 1,000 New York National Guardsmen to patrol and monitor the New York Subways. This order comes according to the New York Post in response to the escalating crime and violence that's hit New York's public transportation system. According to Hockel, soldiers will carry out bag checks and other operations alongside NYPD to crack down on the violence. The governor said that no one headed to their job or to visit family or go to a doctor's appointment should worry that the person sitting next to them possesses a deadly weapon. They shouldn't worry about whether someone's going to brandish a knife or gun.
Starting point is 00:05:59 That's what we're going to do with these checkpoints. NYPD Transit Chief Michael Kemper said that the number of arrests in the subway system rose by 45% this year, to a report from ABC News. There has been a wave of violent assaults and murders in recent months. For instance, NYPD recently arrested three men in connection to a killing of a 45-year-old subway rider, William Averas, in late February. According to NBC News 4, Alvarez likely died of either a gunshot or a puncture wound to the chest. As part of the governor's five-point plan to stop crime in the subway,
Starting point is 00:06:41 Hockel said that the NYPD and district attorneys will have to create a new early warning system for repeat offenders. According to Hockel, we know who they are. They'll flag the criminal history at the time of arrest so it can be fully considered when decisions regarding charges and bail are made. The New York governor did not say when the guardsmen would be deployed. Stay tuned. And with that, that's going to do it for today's episode. for joining us here on the Daily Signal's top news.
