Starting point is 00:00:01 The Obamas pledged their support to Kamala Harris. I'm Elizabeth Mitchell, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Friday, July 26. Barack and Michelle Obama officially endorsed Kamala Harris for president. The Obama's called the vice president in a Harris campaign ad released Friday. Here are the Obamas. I can't have this phone call without saying to my girl Kamala, I am proud of you. This is going to be historic. We called to say Michelle and I,
Starting point is 00:00:41 couldn't be prouder to endorse you and to do everything we can to get you through this election and into the Oval Office. Harris responded that the endorsement meant a lot to her and that she looks forward to campaigning with them. The words you have spoken and the friendship that you have given over all these years mean more than I can express. So thank you both. It means so much. And we're going to have some fun with this too, aren't? This news puts rumors to rest about Michelle Obama running for president against Republican nominee Donald Trump herself. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fears Kamala Harris' public call for an Israel-Palestine ceasefire deal could threaten the negotiations, according to an Israeli official. After a 40-minute meeting with the prime minister, Harris gave an on-camera statement saying she was calling for a hostage and ceasefire deal.
Starting point is 00:01:32 Called for a two-state solution. As I just told Prime Minister Netanyahu, it is time to get this deal done. So to everyone who has been calling for a ceasefire, and to everyone who yearns for peace, I see you, and I hear you. This was Harris' first meeting with Netanyahu since she launched her presidential campaign. Israeli officials said Harris' statement was much more critical than what she said at the meeting. An official told Axios, when our enemies see the U.S. and Israel are aligned, it increases the chances for a hostage deal and decreases the chances for a region.
Starting point is 00:02:08 escalation. When there is such daylight, it pushes the deal further away and brings a regional escalation closer. We hope that Harris's public criticism of Israel won't give Hamas the impression that there is a daylight between the U.S. and Israel, and as a result, make it harder to get a deal. I'm joined by Heritage Foundation National Security and Foreign Policy expert Victoria Coates. Why is Netanyahu concerned that Harris's statement could threaten the deal? Well, Lizith, good to be with you. I think the prime minister really said in his remarks to Congress on the 24th, you know, why this is such a problem. He said that when the United States and Israel are standing clearly together, it's a win-we-win, you lose proposition to borrow President Reagan's
Starting point is 00:02:50 phrase. And when there's daylight between us, that's when the enemies of both Israel and the United States pounce. And I thought the vice president's statement was really shocking. It was the most overtly pro-Palestinian statement that we've seen since October 7th. although we have seen many, but this one really went another couple of feet over the line, as you might say, and it's extraordinary that it came the day after the pro-Palestinian protesters ripped down American flags and burned them while shouting al-Ahu Akbar. I mean, that's not just an attack on Israel. That's an attack on the United States.
Starting point is 00:03:30 And she spoke up in defense of them. Absolutely. That's very shocking. And how would foreign relations with Harris as president differ, from how they've been with President Biden? I think they would become more extreme. Vice President Harris' current national security advisor who reportedly will take a major role
Starting point is 00:03:48 in a prospective Harris administration is a man named Philip Gordon, who also worked for President Obama, and has extreme views on Israel and that he has repeatedly threatened Israel with isolation on the world stage if they don't comply. with the demands from first the Obama administration, then the Biden administration.
Starting point is 00:04:14 That's something Vice President Harris reiterated in her remarks on the 25th. Very interesting. Thank you so much for joining us today. Of course. Thank you. Left-wing media outlets are attempting to downplay Kamala Harris' role in the border crisis. Axios deleted a story referring to the vice president as borders are and added an editor's note saying it incorrectly labeled her as such. Axios published a piece Wednesday contradicting its previous reporting, headlined Kamala Harris was never Biden's border czar. Here's what she really did. A 2021 Axios report by the same author was headlined, Biden put Harris in charge of border crisis.
Starting point is 00:04:56 Time Magazine USA Today, the New York Times, New York Daily News, and Newsweek all said the Bordersar title was misleading. Though some of those publications wrote in 2021 that she she was in charge of the border. Director of the Heritage Foundation Center for Border Security and Immigration Center, Laura Reese joins us to clear up the truth about Harris' role in the border crisis. Is it true that President Biden put Harris in charge of the border? It is true, and there's plenty of video to show that. There is the video of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris sitting in the same room,
Starting point is 00:05:31 where he announces that he's putting her in charge of stemming, the flow from Mexico and Central America and to find the root causes and address them. She thanks him for having confidence in her and thanks him for the job. So the fact that she is now trying to erase that because she knows she's so vulnerable on border security issue shows that she is not being truthful. What was her track record like in the position? It was a failure. There have been over 10 million inadmissible alien encounters by U.S. Customs and Border Protection
Starting point is 00:06:18 while Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have been in office, plus another at least two million known godaways. And if you look at just the numbers from Mexico and the Northern Triangle countries, it's about 5 million illegal aliens. from those four countries are about 45% of the total inadmissible encounters by CBP. So she has absolutely failed at stopping the flow. And what's worse is now she's saying, nope, it wasn't me. I wasn't in charge of this, which is not leadership, but is the opposite of leadership. Absolutely. What would happen at the border if she implements the policies she's supported?
Starting point is 00:07:01 It will continue. If she wins election or is even made president and Joe Biden steps down from his current role, the policies will continue. The difference is that she has been much more open about her radical positions on all of this before she became a senator while she was a senator and beyond while she ran for president. She has very radical views about illegal aliens not being criminals, wanting to get rid of ICE, immigration and customs enforcement and start over, wanting to get rid of private detention centers, et cetera, et cetera. Wow. Thank you so much for joining us. Sure. A Mississippi congressman proposed a bill that would revoke Donald Trump's Secret Service detail. Now that Republicans are calling for his removal from the committee,
Starting point is 00:08:01 investigating the assassination attempt, the Democrat is downplaying how the bill would threaten the former president's safety. Representative Benny Thompson introduced the denying infinite security and government resources allocated toward convicted and extremely dishonorable former protectees act in April, which would revoke secret service protection for those sentenced following conviction for a federal or state felony with a prison term. After Trump was shot at a campaign rally on July 13th in Pennsylvania, Thompson said that even if the bill passed, it would not affect Trump. Thompson said, my bill would not have affected the Secret Services presence during this tragic event. It aims to clarify lines of authority when a protectee is sentenced to prison and is in the custody of
Starting point is 00:08:44 another law enforcement agency. The congressman said in a statement to the Mississippi Free Press, that does not apply to the former president. Thompson's bill states that if the convicted felon's offense is punishable for a term of imprisonment of at least one year, regardless of the actual sentence, the person's secret service protection is terminated. Trump is yet to be sentenced and it is unlikely he will receive jail time. But because the law, a jury convicted him of violating is punishable by imprisonment for at least one year,
Starting point is 00:09:12 regardless of his sentence, he would lose his secret service detail after sentencing. French trains are under attack at the Paris Olympics begin. Multiple malicious attacks, including arson, targeted France's high-speed train lines in a seemingly coordinated sabotage of a 2024 Olympic opening ceremony. today. Railway operator SNCF said train delays and cancellations Friday impacted approximately 800,000 people. International rail operator, Eurostar, said it would cancel a quarter of its services on Friday and over the weekend. Eurostar and SNCF advised travelers to delay or cancel travel if they are able. No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but the scale and
Starting point is 00:09:55 precision suggests that they were coordinated. And that's all for today's episode. Thank you so much for listening to The Daily Signal's top news.
