I'm Virginia Allen, and this is the DailyS legal top news for Monday, November 20th.
Here are today's headlines.
Former First Lady Rosalind Carter passed away on Sunday at the age of 96.
She died in her home in Plains, Georgia, with family around her.
She was in hospice before she died, and former President Carter is also currently in hospice.
She and Jimmy Carter were married for 77 years.
The Carter Center described the former First Lady as a passionate champion of mental health,
caregiving, and women's rights.
In a statement issued by the Carter Center, her son Chip Carter described his mother and the
former First Lady as a great humanitarian in her own right.
He added that his mother's life of service and compassion was an example for all Americans.
Mrs. Carter was passionate about helping people struggling with mental health issues.
down with C-SPAN about a decade ago. And in that interview, she was asked what she hoped her
legacy would be, and this is what she had to say. I hope my legacy continues more than just
first lady, because Carlison has been an integral part of our lives, they were thinking.
I'm at all the wayging peace, fighting disease, and building hope. And I hope that I have
contributed something to mental health issues and help improve a little bit, people, the life
of people living with mentally illnesses.
Ceremonies celebrating the life of Lady Carter
are set to take place from Monday, November 27th through Wednesday in Georgia.
Turning now to Israel, Israel Defense Force troops have continued
to search Gaza's largest hospital, Al-Shifa.
On Sunday, Israel released video of what Israeli officials say
are fortified tunnels beneath the hospital.
Hamas continues to deny.
that they have built tunnels underneath the hospital. Israel also released surveillance footage
of individuals that they say are hostages being taken into the hospital by Hamas terrorists.
The video footage reportedly showed two hostages, one Thai, and the other Nepali being escorted
into the hospital by armed terrorists. The location of those two hostages is now unknown.
And today we learned that 28 premature newborn babies have been evacuated from, from
Shiva Hospital to Egypt for urgent treatment.
John Kirby delivered remarks at the White House today regarding where exactly hostage negotiations
stand.
This is what he had to say.
President Biden and the team here is doing everything we can to help get the hostages
that Hamas took, get them released, including young children and, of course, Americans that are
in that pool, pool.
I think, I know this is of great interest to all of you.
I just want to let you know we're still working this.
by hour. I do not have an update for you on the hostage deal that we're trying to negotiate.
But as you heard the Deputy National Security Advisor say yesterday, we believe we're closer than
we've ever been. So we're hopeful. But there's still work to be done. And nothing is done
until it's all done. So we're going to keep working on this. Kirby added that the Biden
administration is also working to increase the flow of humanitarian aid into the region.
Well, the Hill reported earlier today that a new poll shows that former president Donald Trump
is leading Biden in the polls. A Harvard-Caps-Harris poll has Trump leading Biden by seven points.
48% of respondents said that they would back Trump, and 41% said that they would back Biden.
11% said that they were unsure about who they would support.
An NBC News poll reported over the weekend shows that Biden's approval rating,
has fallen to 40%.
One of the reasons for that low rating is reportedly Biden's foreign policy
and his handling of the war between Hamas and Israel.
The election is, of course, still a year away, so a lot can change.
Well, how about a little bit of good news on this Monday before Thanksgiving?
This morning, a turkey's life was spared in an annual White House tradition.
President Biden pardoned two big white-feathered turkeys out of the United.
outside the White House today.
The birds came all the way from Minnesota
to receive the presidential pardon.
Their names are Liberty and Bell.
I hear by pardon, Liberty, and Bell.
Congratulations, birds.
Today is also President Joe Biden's 81st birthday,
and he used the occasion to joke about his age
with the crowd present.
And by the way, it's my birthday today
and they can actually sign birthday.
I just want you know it's difficult turning
60. Difficult.
The first president to pardon a turkey was John F. Kennedy in 1963.
But the annual pardoning of the turkey didn't become a tradition until George H.W. Bush's administration.
But with that, we are going to leave it there for today's episode.
