Starting point is 00:00:25 We'd love to talk. Business. President Trump meets with Zelensky of Ukraine and major European leaders in pursuit of a Russo-Ukrainian peace deal. And Democrats struggle to find diverse support for protests against National Guard deployments to Washington, D.C. I'm Tony Kinnett, host of the Daily Signals Tony Kinnett cast, syndicated nationally at 7 p.m. Eastern. It is Tuesday, August 19, 2025. This is the Daily Signal's top news in 10. Yesterday, President Donald Trump and President Volodemir Zelensky of Ukraine met at the White House for a series of negotiations and meetings after the president of the United States had previously met with Vladimir Putin of Russia in Alaska on Friday.
Starting point is 00:01:17 Now, Zelensky appears, at least according to some of the remarks made to press, ready to end the war at all due haste. And it appears that for perhaps the first time in this entire struggle that there's, is considerable progress being made. Check it out. I think we show that we are strong people and we supported the idea of the United States of personal health, President Trump, to stop this war to make a diplomatic way of finishing this war. And we are ready for trilateral as President said. This is a good signal about trilateral. I think this is very good. Zelensky also claimed that it depends on what the bigger countries in Europe, the United
Starting point is 00:01:57 States, others around the world, are. willing and able to do that it's not just the decisions that Ukraine is making, but also what others are able to suggest or provide for long-term peace reinforcement. It depends on the big countries, on the United States, on a lot of our friends. As Harry Enton over on CNN pointed out, Ukrainian support for continuing the war has diminished considerably and seeking an off-ramp and perhaps a peace solution has risen among the Ukrainian people. What are we talking about here? Ukrainians on the war versus Russia.
Starting point is 00:02:31 You go back to 2022, the start of the war. Fight until Ukraine wins. Look at this. The vast majority, about three-quarters, 73 percent agreed with that position. Negotiate to end the war as soon as possible? Only 22%. Look at where we are now. It's a complete flip.
Starting point is 00:02:44 It's the inverse. Now 69% want to negotiate to end the war as soon as possible compared to just 24% who want to fight until Ukraine wins. That's a 49-point drop in this position. Later at a press conference with a meeting of several major European leaders, Trump expressed a hopeful optimism for future peace talks. The Alaska summit reinforced my belief that while difficult pieces within reach, and I believe that in a very significant step, President Putin agreed that Russia would accept
Starting point is 00:03:13 security guarantees for Ukraine, and this is one of the key points that we need to consider, and we're going to be considering that at the table also, like, who will do what, essentially. I'm optimistic that collectively we can reach an agreement that would deter any future aggression against Ukraine. And I actually think there won't be. I think that's even overrated, largely overrated, but we're going to find out. According to sources yesterday evening close to German Chancellor Mertz, this being first reported by Fox News.
Starting point is 00:03:47 The German Chancellor has just told reporters that the President spoke with Vladimir Putin agreed that the Putin-Zalinsky meeting is going to happen with. within two weeks. So that's from Chancellor Mers. Listen, we've got more with the panel. Final thoughts about today's White House. The trilateral Trump, Putin, and Zelensky meeting will be happening within two weeks. This would mark the very first time that Putin and Zelensky have met together since at least before the war has began. It's been quite a long time indeed. President Trump praised not only the meaning that he had with Zelensky of Ukraine, but also the other European leaders who came to the United States to put together a united front,
Starting point is 00:04:24 of forward support for Ukraine, as well as buying certain material from the United States in the defense of Europe for the near and distant future. These included President Zelensky, of course, of Ukraine, Emmanuel Macron of France, Alexander Stubb of Finland, Prime Minister Georgia Maloney of Italy, Kirstarmer of the United Kingdom, Chancellor Friedrich Merth of Germany, President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and Secretary General of NATO Mark Rudi. in the White House, President Trump said, which ended in a further meeting in the Oval Office. During the meeting, we discussed security guarantees for Ukraine, which guarantees would be provided
Starting point is 00:05:05 by the various European countries, with a coordination with the United States of America. Everyone is very happy about the possibility of peace for Russia and Ukraine. At the conclusion of the meetings, I called President Putin and began the arrangements for a meeting at a location to be determined between Putin and Zelensky. After that meeting takes place, we will have a trilateral, which would be between the two presidents plus myself. Again, this was a very good early step for a war that has been going on for almost four years. Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Whitkoff, are coordinating with Russia and Ukraine. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Starting point is 00:05:44 Both the Italian and Finnish heads of state made quite a bit of effort to praise President Trump for getting closer to peace than any at that point. had previously thought possible. Something is changing, something has changed thanks to you, thanks also to the Stalin in the battlefield, which was achieved with the bravery of Ukrainians and with the unity that we all provided to Ukraine. In the past two weeks, we've probably had more progress in ending this war than we have in the past three and a half years.
Starting point is 00:06:19 And Democrats across the country are struggling to gain any kind of most. momentum in fighting back against the Trump administration deploying the National Guards to D.C., particularly any kind of momentum with voters. A lot of very good people in there, not all, but a lot of very good, very, very professional. And, you know, we have a big force. I think they said, 3,500. You know, they're always asking the mayor, who's a very nice woman, to kind of do the job. You know, we've worked with the mayor for six months, and she's been here for many years. And the numbers are worse than they ever.
Starting point is 00:06:55 Don't let anyone tell you than not. And the whole statistical charts of the day, the whole thing is a redeem. Despite the warnings by Bass and many of the other Democrat officials around the country. I'm very concerned about that. And not only that, I'm concerned about the way he is rolling that out in Washington, D.C., which is essentially going after young black and brown youth in Washington, D.C.,
Starting point is 00:07:21 imposing a curfew, saying that if they violate them, the curfew, the parents could be charged $500, saying that the kids could be detained and arrested. We've tried those policies before. They do not work. And it's my understanding that crime was going down in Washington, D.C. So what is the purpose of this? Some of the protests, for example, those in Washington, D.C., were sparsely attended and appear to only show middle-aged white individuals who appear to be from a certain suburban political class. Meanwhile, social media is flooded with videos from individuals of all stripes, creeds, colors, and backgrounds, praising the National Guard moving through Washington, D.C., and making the city safe for really the first time in ages. Here's a small compilation of some of those videos.
Starting point is 00:08:45 Yeah, you cannot tell me this is not benefiting us. It's definitely doing what it's supposed to do. I don't care what, who versus who, what they mean by what. baby is clean and beautiful like how we like do you not understand that this is what the residents won I'm not talking about the bougie upper echelons bougie blacks I'm talking about the everyday grandmas that have to deal with these homeless people peeing and pooping on their steps and then they have to clean it up they don't feel safe when they walk into their neighborhood the the the gangs and the drug the dope boys are just standing around the corner you know like do you not
Starting point is 00:09:29 understand this is what they want thoughts today we're talking about uh dc crime rates is it safe to live in dc do you agree with president trump federalizing for 30 days to sort of stamp down on crime what are your thoughts i agree with it i was born in race in the district and i've never seen the things that i see today with uh children it's it's it's it's as young as three years old being shot. I mean, where does that, you know, where does that happen? I think it's a bad idea to fear what this president is doing. I mean, he actually lives in the city now.
Starting point is 00:10:10 I mean, come on. He would be foolish, I think, to ignore things like that. A child, three years old being shot. Well, people being shot on the bus. I mean, that happened in Upper North. northwest Washington DC. So I mean, yeah, I think he's, I agree. People in Upper Northwest and like the areas, because it's hard finding actual D.C. residents here in this area. It's mostly like bureaucrats and whatnot. It's not the real D.C.
Starting point is 00:10:36 people. Do they generally support this? Do they feel like they want crime to be under control, or are they against it? I do. I believe that most people that live here, you know, that work hard every day and have families. they want the crime rate to be brought under control. Before you go, head down to the description and make sure you're subscribed to the Tony Kinnett cast.
