The Republican presidential ticket is now set. I'm Elizabeth Mitchell, and this is the Daily
Signal Top News from Monday, July 15th. Donald Trump officially accepted the Republican presidential
nomination and announced Senator J.D. Vance as his vice presidential running mate. Trump is now
the presidential nominee for the third election cycle in a row. Trump's running mate, Vance,
is a Republican senator from Ohio. The former president announced his pick on truth social at
3 p.m. on Monday. Trump wrote, After lengthy deliberation and thought and considering the
tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the
position of vice president of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio.
J.D. honorably served our country in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State University in two
years, Summa Cum Laude, and is a Yale Law School graduate, where he was the editor of the Yale Law
Journal and President of the Yale Law Veterans Association.
Born in Middletown, Ohio, Vance wrote the best-selling memoir, Hillbilly Elegy in 2016,
which captured the struggles of Middle America.
In 2021, he launched a political campaign for Ohio's open Senate seat.
He was endorsed by then-President Trump and went on to defeat the Democratic nominee,
Representative Tim Ryan, in 2022.
Vance shares Trump's fervor for border security.
He repeatedly has warned about the Constitution.
consequences of legal immigration and has loudly supported funding the completion of Trump's wall along the U.S. Mexico border.
Vance has also opposed experimental transgender medical interventions for minors. He introduced the Protect Children's Innocence Act to make interventions such as puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and transgender surgeries a felony when performed on minors.
The Ohio Senator has indicated that he would support a federal ban on abortions after 15 weeks gestation, although he,
he more recently said that abortion laws should be kept up to the states.
Vance has three children with his wife, Usha, whom he married in 2014.
Today kicked off the first day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The convention will run from Monday through Thursday, and according to the city of Milwaukee's
website, an estimated 50,000 delegates, media, law enforcement staff, and visitors will
attend the convention and related activities in Milwaukee.
The Daily Signal team is there on the ground, including Virginia Allen.
Virginia, how are things looking in Milwaukee?
Hey, Elizabeth.
It's great to be with you.
The energy is definitely high.
You know, there might not be 50,000 people here yet, but we're getting pretty close.
There's a lot of folks that are streaming in.
Security is very, very tight.
And for good reason, obviously, it's always tight with these things.
But, of course, because of the attempted assassination of former president Donald Trump on Saturday,
security measures are even tighter. But what we're seeing is that folks seem really excited to be here.
I've been both in the media area today and lots of folks streaming through for interviews
and then also been over at the Heritage Foundation Policy Fest with a really big crowd of individuals
who are eager to hear about what are the main policy issues facing our nation right now
and what solutions do conservatives have to those issues. So it's going to be a very, very
full week on the ground here. But I think everyone is really excited to see what unfolds. And
man, Monday has already been a wild news day. And I think that energy is just going to continue
to build over the course of this week. What's the atmosphere like at the RNC surrounding
Trump's recent announcement about who his vice president pick will be? Well, that literally,
that news just broke for the time we're recording this. It just broke a few minutes ago. And
all around me, there are folks doing interviews on talk radio and TV. And I think the energy is
really high. I'm curious to see tonight as the evening goes on what is said. I think people
starting maybe around noon today, I think Vance definitely became the key lead and people thought,
okay, in all likelihood, it's probably going to be Vance. And there's a lot of energy around
Vance, I think folks like him a lot. But I'm excited to see here at the RNC what the response is from
just attendees on the ground, not necessarily the media or those involved in politics, but just
those attending. Do they think this is the right choice and the best choice?
Interesting. We'll be sure to touch back on that tomorrow. And who are some of the guests
on the ground today? Oh my goodness. What a full house on the ground. The big,
main stage speeches are coming later this week, but we have had at the Heritage Foundation
Policy Fest kicked off today with Vivek Ramoswamy, and it's closing this evening with Tucker
Carlson. And everyone is looking forward, of course, to Trump's remarks on Thursday. And there
are so many lawmakers. I had the conversation earlier today with Tennessee Congressman Ogles,
and he's actually joining the podcast tomorrow morning, so excited for that conversation.
But really, everyone involved in the world of conservative politics is here
and has a very, very firm message about the future of the country and where we need to go.
That's really exciting.
What can we expect to see from the RNC the rest of this week?
Man, it's hard to know how we're going to top today, right, with that VP announcement.
and this morning hearing that the classified document case against President Donald Trump was dismissed.
It's already been a blockbuster day.
But I think the rest of this week, there is going to continue to probably be a lot of really big news.
And I think as we see some appearances from folks like Trump, like Vance, that energy is just going to build.
Awesome. Well, thank you so much for joining us, Virginia.
Yeah, we're excited to keep bringing you all updates from the RNC this week.
Thanks, Elizabeth.
Judge Eileen Cannon dismissed the classified documents case against former President Donald Trump Monday because she said the prosecutor was illegally appointed.
Trump faced charges of illegally retaining classified government documents after leaving the White House and trying to withhold them from government officials who sought their return.
Heritage Foundation legal expert Culley Stimson is sitting down with us to discuss what this means for the former president.
Thank you so much for joining us today.
Great to be with you.
Are you surprised by the Florida federal judge's decision, and do you think she made the right call?
I do think she made the right call, and I'm pleasantly surprised, because remember that this was not even an issue until recently when our boss, Ed Meese, and Mike Mukase and others filed a friend of the court brief, not only in her case, but also in the Trump against United States Supreme Court case, claiming that Jack Smith wasn't appointed concurrent or consistent with the court case.
appointment's clause under the Constitution. And it was only Justice Thomas, who in his concurrence,
in that opinion, noted that when they send the Trump, the U.S. case back to the district court here
in D.C., he wants that judge or would like that judge to look into that. And clearly, Judge
Cannon and Florida had already been thinking about that, and Trump's lawyers had pushed this
issue. And so this is really a fundamental out-of-the-gate issue.
Was the person who was appointed to prosecute you validly appointed?
If he is, he can go forward.
If he's not, the case doesn't even exist.
And this is what the judge said.
Interesting.
And what is the significance of this case being dropped just two days
after the assassination attempt against Trump?
I wouldn't draw any connection between the two.
It's just when the court had her order ready, she released her order.
And so I wouldn't draw a connection between them.
at all. It's just the timing. It's just timing. And what does this mean for the future of Trump's
presidential campaign? Well, look, I think that the lawfare launched against Trump in several
jurisdictions has, oddly enough, buoyed people to his cause and has emboldened him. And then when
you add in this what could have been an historically horrible,
thing of the assassination of a former president. I don't think that her dismissing these charges
is going to hurt him politically. I don't do politics. I do law and policy. I think when you
read this case, and we'll have a Daily Signal blog post on it shortly because it just spread the whole
opinion, you'll see that it was a very methodical journeyman opinion. She walked
through the history of the separation of powers and why it's important as a
protection against liberty. She also noticed something really interesting and I
thought it was very wise of her to do in the beginning. She said if Garland had just
appointed any one of the 93 Senate confirmed US attorneys around the country,
we wouldn't even be having this discussion because that's a valid appointment.
But he picked a civilian and he gave them all the powers and more than a standard
U.S. attorney, and that's why it was an invalid appointment. Wow, that's really interesting.
Thank you so much for joining us today. Thank you. Donald Trump told the New York Post,
it's a miracle he's alive. He said in an interview with the post Michael Goodwin,
I'm not supposed to be here. I'm supposed to be dead. The former president was wounded in the
ear and narrowly missed being fatally shot in the head when a would-be assassin shot at him at about
6.10 p.m. Saturday at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, about 33 miles north of Pittsburgh.
Trump said,
The doctor at the hospital said he never saw anything like this. He called it a miracle.
While flying on his private plane to Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention,
Trump told the New York Post reporter that he would likely be dead if he hadn't slightly
turned his head to read a chart on illegal immigration.
The former president and now Republican presidential nominee said,
By luck or by God, many people are saying, it's by God, I'm still here.
Trump said he wanted to keep speaking after getting shot, but Secret Service agents insisted he go to the hospital.
Trump praised the agents for immediately coming to his rescue like linebackers.
Former fire chief, Corey Comparatore, was shot and killed during the assassination attempt as he was shielding his wife and daughters from the gunfire.
Two other people were wounded.
When asked if he had given any thought to attending the funeral of the funeral of the gunfire, he was shielding his wife and his wife,
Comparatore, Trump said yes.
Trump then told his aides behind him he wants to go to the hospital and call all the families
of those injured.
The Secret Service will privately brief House Oversight Committee members on Tuesday on the
assassination attempt on Donald Trump's life, Politico has reported.
Oversight Chairman James Comer, a Kentucky Republican, also invited Secret Service Director
Kimberly Cheedell to testify publicly next week.
The committee expects Cheetahle to oversee.
appear for the hearing. The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee is also
investigating the assassination attempt. President Joe Biden picked Cheatel to lead the Secret Service in
August 2022. Cheatel has been a forceful advocate of diversity in the Secret Service and the
security industry in general. She spoke about it in a 2022 interview with the website Women in
Security while still working at PepsiCo. She said, achievement in a male-dominated industry was not
lost on me. I kept a photo on my desk of the first five women sworn into the service, and I
used that to remind me that these women created opportunities for me, and I can help others grow and
lead as well. In a CBS news interview in 2023, Cheetah addressed some of the issues in the Secret
Service and said diversity would be a major priority. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said
lawmakers would conduct a full investigation of the shooting on Saturday. Democrats say efforts to oust
President Joe Biden, as the Democratic nominee, have lost momentum.
According to an NBC report, allies of the president said the efforts to replace Biden are
over after the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump on Saturday.
One Biden ally said, I think it's over. You just lose all momentum.
Four House Democrats had called for Biden to drop out of the race after his press conference
at the conclusion of the 75th NATO summit last week in Washington. That brought the number
of Democratic members of Congress who have withdrawn their support for the president up to 20.
