I'm Elizabeth Mitchell, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Wednesday, August 7th. Though former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi claims Kamala Harris's VP pick, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, is moderate. He has a radical pro-abortion background.
Starting point is 00:01:01 Under Walls's leadership, Minnesota babies born alive and botched abortions were left to die. Walls also appears to have connections to the Minnesota Freedom Fund. which bailed out violent Minneapolis rioters in 2020. The Daily Signal Senior Reporter, Mary Margaret Olahan, has been covering Walses' policies on the unborn. Mary Margaret, could you tell us about Wals' record on abortion? Sure. So under a 2015 Minnesota law, the state was formerly requiring doctors to say
Starting point is 00:01:28 whether abortions resulted in the live birth of a baby. What actions were taken to preserve the life of that baby and whether the baby survived. And so due to these requirements, we know that between January 1st, 2021 and December 31, 2021, five babies survived abortions and were then allowed to die. Now, not only did Walls fail to protect the lives of babies born alive in botched abortions, but he also removed reporting requirements about this. Is that correct?
Starting point is 00:01:57 Yes, that's correct. So basically, he stripped the state's requirement that measures be taken to preserve the baby's life and health and merely replaced it with a kind of nebulous requirement for, care. So now the state's not reporting on any of these measures that were supposedly taken or the number of babies that are born alive. Thanks so much for coming on. Thanks for having me. Presumptive Democratic nominee Kamala Harris urged followers to contribute to the Minnesota Freedom Fund to help bailout rioters in Minneapolis following George Floyd's death in police custody. Walls too has connections to the Minnesota Freedom Fund. He tapped the fund's executive director
Starting point is 00:02:34 for the state's sentencing guidelines commission. Her name is Tonny. The Daily Signals managing editor, Tyler O'Neill, uncovered this. Tyler, could you tell us about Hansi? Yeah, my pleasure. So Tanya Hansi, who was one of the public members of the Sentencing Commission, she spent time in jail for possessing controlled substances. And she's kind of this activist for looking at sentencing guidelines and changing the way that they are.
Starting point is 00:03:03 So the Minnesota Freedom Fund hired her as its executive director. And she was leading this organization, bailing out rioters, bailing out people who'd been convicted of sexual abuse and who may have posed a threat to the community. And they're sending this money. And so I asked Wals's administration if he checked to make sure that they weren't releasing potentially violent people. And he didn't get back to me. Wow. What else should Americans know about the Minnesota Freedom Fund? Yeah, so the Minnesota Freedom Fund, you know, has been letting these potentially violent people accused of crimes out on paying their bail because it doesn't believe in the cash bail system.
Starting point is 00:03:48 But Tanya Hansi, who was the executive director there, who was tapped by Walz's administration, she had reportedly falsely claimed to be a Native American and have Native American heritage. So the Minnesota Freedom Fund fired her unceremoniously, naturally, came out with a statement. That statement, interestingly, has been deleted from their website now, but it was preserved by the Internet Archive. And the interesting thing is, Wals' commission didn't get rid of her. She stayed on the commission throughout her term, and then it looks as though Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan wrote a letter of recommendation for her even after this scandal broke. Now, I'm not entirely certain when the letter of recommendation was written, but Tanya Hansi appears to have touted. it as recently as 2023, and the lieutenant governor's office did not respond to my request for comment about it. Wow. Well, thank you so much for covering this fascinating saga.
Starting point is 00:04:46 Yeah, my pleasure. Thanks for having me. Republicans are thrilled with Kamala Harris's choice of Tim Walz as VP due to his radical background. Following the announcement, Republican nominee Donald Trump posted on truth social saying thank you in all caps. He went on to say, this is the most radical left duo in American history. There has never been anything like it and never will there be again. Crazy, cum, blah is indeed crazy. I hear there is a big movement to bring back Crooked Joe. That's former President Donald Trump on Tim Walls as the VP pick. Kellyanne Conway, a former Trump senior counsel, posted on X, Tim Walls, what a relief. Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio said
Starting point is 00:05:32 Walls offers a lot for Republicans to seize on to show the radical differences. The Ohio Republican told Axios that Walls is a weak choice and really surprising. Some Republicans say that popular Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro would have been a stronger choice. Speaker Mike Johnson told the Hill on Tuesday, it makes it easier for us. He is a far-left candidate in choice. I frankly thought that she might try to choose a moderate, but obviously she has proven once again who she is. However, progressive Democrats are also pleased with the pick. Representative Alexandria Ocasia Cortez, a Democrat from New York and member of the squad,
Starting point is 00:06:11 said Harris made an excellent decision in picking walls. Far-left squad member, Representative Cory Bush, lost her primary last night. The St. Louis, Missouri Democrat has come under fire for her vocal opposition to Israel. In her concession speech, she expressed her continued support for Palestine, which is governed by the terrorist organization Hamas. Here's Bush last night. We will keep supporting a free Palestine. Bush called the Israeli a retaliation against Hamas' October 7th attack
Starting point is 00:06:49 killing more than a thousand people an ethnic cleansing campaign. She wrote on social media soon after the attack that Israel's collective punishment against Palestinians for Hamas' action is a war crime. Bush is one of two squad members ousted this year after a pro-Israel group spent millions on campaign ads to defeat them. In her heated concession speech, Jamal said she'd tear the American Israel Affairs Committee's kingdom down. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas celebrated Bush's defeat in a statement on X. Cruz said, she's a radical anti-Semite who has led the push to defund the police.
Starting point is 00:07:26 Crow Palestine Vandals defaced the headquarters of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or A PAC, in Washington, D.C, on Monday morning. Daily Signal News producer Tim Kennedy has been covered. anti-Israel escalations like this. Tim, what happened? Anti-Israel vandals used red spray paint to write F. Israel on the front and side of the building. Palestine action took responsibility for the defacement.
Starting point is 00:07:53 I mean, we've seen a lot of occurrences like this in D.C. this past summer. I mean, we'll go all the way back to June, where you had thousands, tens of thousands of pro-Palestine activists and protesters flooding Lafayette Park for our listeners that aren't familiar. Lafayette Park is right outside the White House defacing statues like the Andrew Jackson statue, which rose to prominence during the BLM riots in 2020. They then also took out their anger on places like Union Station and Columbus Circle outside just this past July, late July the 24th. is one instance in a sea of them this past summer.
Starting point is 00:08:39 Wow, absolutely. And in its statement claiming responsibility, Palestine action said that APEC, which is the Israel group that was vandalized, is a corrupt foreign organization that plugs and plays the morally bankrupt American politician like a game of monopoly. Will American taxpayers pay for the weapons that are being dropped in Gaza? D.C. police are investigating the attack. Tim, what do you think motivated Palestine, action to carry out this destruction of property on Monday?
Starting point is 00:09:09 Like said before, I think there's an emboldening of these pro-Palestinian protesters, everywhere from the violence outside Lafayette Park or outside the White House in June of this year to the violence that we just saw with American flags being torn down and burnt and Palestinian flags risen in their stead outside Union Station in Columbus Circle Park here in Washington, D.C. on July 24th. Law enforcement, especially in the National Park Services, to the best of our knowledge, are not taking the necessary procedures to prosecute or fine the groups behind these protests. It's no surprise, but Jamal Bowman lost his primary this past summer at the hands of what many people attributed to being APAC at the time, the group that was vandalized this past week. Corey Bush just lost her primary, another famed member of the squad this week as well,
Starting point is 00:10:11 directly after this vandalism. So proponents of these individuals definitely tie their failure to this pro-Israel lobbying group in the United States. Wow, well, thank you so much for telling us about this, Tim. Anytime. Russia accused Ukraine of entering and attacking its territory. Russian officials said Ukraine launched a massive attack on Tuesday. I'm sitting down with the Heritage Foundation, foreign policy expert, Victoria Coates. Could you tell us a little bit about what really happened here?
Starting point is 00:10:44 Well, good to be with you, Elizabeth. It's still a very fluid situation. There are a lot of things in play at Ukraine right now. We've had the first American F-16s arrive in country. They're training the Ukrainians on those. Our question has always been, why is this a good idea now? It wasn't a good idea two years ago. So President Zelensky has said he needs as many as 130 of those F-16s at a price tag of some $10 billion, not sure what we're going to do with that.
Starting point is 00:11:10 There are additional reports that the Russians asked the United States to pull Ukraine back from an attempt to assassinate President Putin earlier in July, not clear how that all worked out, and that the Russians are making significant gains in eastern Ukraine. So that's where the news cycle was Monday night when we all went to bed. we woke up this morning to discover Ukraine has made a significant offensive move onto Russian territory into the Kersk region, which abuts eastern Ukraine, and are apparently also making significant gains. And so we're not entirely sure what end this will lead to, why Ukraine is going into Russia proper rather than trying to take back its own territory, or if any of this was coordinated with Washington.
Starting point is 00:11:59 Interesting. And this appears to be one of the largest incursions into Russia since the conflict started in February 2020. Is that correct? Yes, it is. I mean, really, Ukraine has been all about defending its own borders. The Biden-Harris administration has been very clear that they don't want the Ukrainians using any American material to attack Russia proper. So it's, as I said, not clear just how this is being authorized or what the goal is. And Putin said he met with his top defense and security officials after the alleged attack to coordinate assistance. What do you expect to come from that? Well, I mean, the Russians are going to have to do something to defend their territory. And I must say, I don't have a great deal of sympathy with them. They haven't been very respectful of Ukraine's boundaries.
Starting point is 00:12:46 So, you know, if the Ukrainians feel there is a strategic advantage to be gained by putting the Russians back on their heels, you know, certainly to bring this war to a success, you know, what we would consider a successful conclusion from a Ukrainian and American position is what we've always wanted at the Heritage Foundation. But it's just the strategy from my perspective right now is really unclear and just how far Russia will go to repel this incursion has to be the question that we'll be asking over the next 24 hours. Well, thank you so much for joining us.
