It is Tuesday, November 11th, Veterans Day, 2025.
This is the Daily Signals. Top News in 10.
As the Senate continues with a series of procedural votes to pass a continuing resolution that ends
the government shutdown, several of the eight Democrats who broke rank Sunday evening voting
against Chuck Schumer to advance and end to the Democrats' government shutdown are
criticizing Chuck Schumer and announcing that they ended the government shutdown because
they considered it a failure to keep the government closed when Americans needed it open.
Democrat Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois on this.
Many of my friends are unhappy.
They think we should have kept our government closed indefinitely to protest the policies of the Trump administration.
I share their opinions of this administration but cannot accept a strategy which wages political
battle at the expense of my neighbor's paycheck or the food for his children.
Mr. President, I yield the floor.
While Democrat Senator Tim Cain of Virginia would have had an opportunity to say that this was about making sure that his constituents in Virginia were brought back to work as federal workers, he didn't exactly take his time on camera to articulate this.
Do you wish that you would have started looking for this offer sooner?
You said that Republicans were never going to change in their position.
I didn't fully understand how Doug.
they were again because I was so focused on the Virginia elections I wasn't in this
discussion on the health care to see how dug in they were but I even as I was not
part of these discussions I was saying to Thune and others on the floor going back
listen I need you some of you heard me say this in the hall I need a moratorium
on mischief others are working on the health care thing I trust them others
are working on the probes thing I trust them I need a moratorium on mischief
because if we vote to open and then the immediate step next week is Donald
Trump fires a lot more people, it's going to blow up trust to get the full year deal.
And so I've been preaching this moratorium on mischief for a month.
But I think partly why did they finally give me the moratorium on mischief on riffs?
They needed my vote, but they also saw the election on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Senator Bernie Sanders went straight for the jugular.
Tonight, eight Democrats voted with the Republicans to allow them to go forward on this continuing
resolution and to my mind this was a very very bad vote what it does first of
all is it raises health care premiums for over 20 million Americans by
doubling and in some cases tripling or quadrupling people can't afford that
when we are already paying the highest prices of the world for health care number
two it paves the way for 15 million people to be thrown off of Medicaid and the
Affordable Care Act studies show, that will mean that some 50,000 Americans will die every
year unnecessarily. And all of that was done to give a trillion dollars in tax breaks to the
1%. As everybody knows, just on Tuesday, we had an election all over this country. And what
the election showed is that the American people want us to stand up to Trumpism, to his
war against working class people, to his authoritarianism. That is what the American
people wanted, but tonight that is not what happened. So we've got to go forward, do the best
that we can, to try to protect working class people, to make sure that the United States
not only does not throw people off of health care, but ends the absurdity of being the only
major country on earth that doesn't guarantee health care to all people. We got a lot of work
to do. But to be honest with you, tonight was not a good night. Thank you.
of California announced he'd lost all faith in Chuck Schumer.
So you're absolutely right.
I mean, look, this was the straw that broke the camel's back.
You had Chuck Schumer cheerleading into the war in Iraq.
You've had Chuck Schumer cheerleading for a blank check to Net Miyahu.
You've had Chuck Schumer betraying us on the first shutdown.
You then had Chuck Schumer given multiple opportunities after Zoran won the primary
to at least endorse him.
Even if it was a pro forma endorsement, he doesn't do that.
And now he's not even willing to fight to make sure that the ACA subsidies don't increase.
So to your earlier question about are there difficult questions on SNAP benefits and proof pay, of course there are.
And maybe if this was the only context, Chuck Schumer would have some grace and goodwill and say, okay, we disagree with this deal, but it's not enough to call for you to step down.
But this is the culmination of someone who just doesn't get it, who doesn't get how much people are hurting, who doesn't get where the base of this party is, who doesn't get how upset this party has been that we're giving all this money to overseas wars and not doing health care here, who certainly is never going to support Medicare for all.
He's just out of the time.
She's not the future of the party.
As did Massachusetts representative and candidate for U.S. Senate, Seth Moulton.
Do you think that Chuck Schumer should step aside now and let someone else lead Democrats in the Senate?
I think it would be better. I think it would be better than the status quo. And I hear this from Democrats all across Massachusetts.
Everywhere I go, people say there's a leadership vacuum right now in the Democratic Party. We need new leadership.
We've got to stop protecting this establishment status quo that's gotten us a second term of Donald Trump.
As for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, he is still attempting to post his way through it.
putting up videos calling the Republicans evil
and a party attempting to starve children.
In another act of brazen cruelty,
the Trump administration is going to the Supreme Court
again to prevent hungry kids from getting fed.
And instead of just feeding these hungry children,
hungry veterans, hungry senior citizens,
they're going to court again to ask the courts
to prevent them from being forced to do this.
The cruelty of this administration is endless.
Meanwhile, despite
promises from freezing rent to free bus rides to state-run grocery stores, all of the promises
that helped get Zoran Mamdani, the young progressive Democrat elected in New York City. New York
Governor and Democrat Kathy Hochel announced yesterday that she wouldn't be giving Zoran
Mamdani a lot of the free stuff he had campaigned on.
Well, I'm from Buffalo. We don't put up a lot of crap. So I just want to set the stage
that you know you look at the history of people who've run multi-billion dollar ad campaigns
to try and get me to change my position I don't change my position so I just want to put it out
there I respect people's opinions I respect the proper place to convey them and so I've said
that I hear you and that was important but also there is a time in place and so that's all on that
no I've had conversations on this on this trip but many conversations I'd say over the
summer and the fall that were important that led to an understanding of what's in the realm
of possibility shared ambitions but what is what is doable is the question and so no we're aligned
on some of these issues you know I've made it clear where I have strong disagreements with
issues that really do not pertain to you know the governance of New York City and said you need
to get a police commissioner that people trust who has a record about the
accomplishment to keep the trajectory that we're on right now, which is crime is going
down. Crime is going down significantly. You don't say mission accomplished, but then is a
great trend. So him agreeing with that assessment, that recommendation to keep
Jessica Tisch was an important statement on many fronts. So I'm looking forward
to, you know, having our teams can keep the conference, a lot of conversations with
our teams. We said we'd be talking, you know, actually I'm meeting him very soon to talk
about our response, if there is a surge of ice agents and National Guard that do come,
perhaps after his inauguration, and how we can be proactive in preventing that from happening.
And that's the state I'm in right now, prevent that from happening.
So we've had a lot of conversations.
So, no, there's a, I think there's a mutual respect.
And that's going to, I think, only grow deeper.
And finally, an interview last night between President Donald Trump and Fox News, Laura Ingram,
has stirred up quite a bit of conversation.
It began with the president praising his administration's tariff policy.
But even with interest rates up, the economy is the strongest it's ever been.
You know, you asked me, just to go back to the beginning of your question, you talked about
presses, we're down on energy, we're down on interest rate.
You know, interest rates are down despite the Fed.
Now, if we had a normal person that the Fed would have really low interest rates,
and we will soon have that.
have somebody this. And why are people saying they're anxious about the economy? Why are they saying that?
I don't know that they are saying. I think polls are fake. We have the greatest economy we've ever
had. We have, uh, we will have over 20 trillion dollars come into our economy. And it's largely because
of my election, but it's also largely because of tariffs. Then the president drew a fair bit of
concern when pressed by Laura Ingram over his deal with Xi of Beijing to allow 600,000 Chinese
students to come study in the United States.
In my first term, I took in hundreds of billions of tariffs.
I put tariffs on China very early.
Then when we got hit with COVID, we fought that.
We did a very good job.
But that was COVID.
It came from a certain place in China.
Another great gift from China.
It was another gift we got.
But look, I get along great with Presidency.
I get along great with China.
But the only way you're going to get along well with China is you have to deal from a position
of strength.
We have tremendous strength because of tariffs.
We have tremendous strength because of what I've done.
I've rebuilt our military, and they have a lot of missiles, but we have a lot of missiles, too.
And they don't want to mess around with us, I can tell you that.
A lot of MAGA.
