Starting point is 00:00:01 I'm Virginia Allen, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Monday, March 4th. Here are today's headlines. The Supreme Court ruled unanimously today that former President Donald Trump couldn't be removed from the 2024 primary ballot in Colorado. The case revolved around the issue of whether Colorado could remove Trump from the ballot under the insurrection clause of the 14th Amendment. The nation's highest court wrote in its opinion, we conclude that states may disqualify persons holding or attempting to hold state office, but states have no power under the Constitution to enforce Section 3 with respect to federal offices, especially the presidency. Trump spoke out about the court's ruling earlier today. Let's take a listen to his comments. I want to start by thanking the Supreme Court for its unanimous. decision today. It was a very important decision. We're very well crafted. And I think it will go a long
Starting point is 00:01:17 way toward bringing our country together, which our country needs. And they work long, they worked hard, and frankly they worked very quickly on something that will be spoken about 100 years from now and 200 years from now, extremely important. Essentially, you cannot take somebody out of a race because an opponent would like to have it that way. And it has nothing to do with the fact that it's the leading candidate, whether it was the leading candidate or a candidate that was well down on the totem pole, you cannot take somebody out of a race. The voters can take the person out of the race very quickly,
Starting point is 00:01:57 but a court shouldn't be doing that, and the Supreme Court saw that very well. Trump's counsel of record on the case, Harmeet Dillon, made a statement about the decision, saying today's unanimous Supreme Court decision underscores the bedrock principles of our democracy and the rule of law. This victory is not just for President Trump, but the integrity of our electoral system and the rights of voters across the country. Colorado's Secretary of State, Jenna Griswold, weighed in on the nine-to-zero decision with a different opinion. She wrote,
Starting point is 00:02:33 I am disappointed in the U.S. Supreme Court's decision stripping states of the authority to enforce Section 3 of the 14th Amendment for federal candidates. Colorado should be able to bar oath-breaking insurrectionists from our ballot. To learn more about the ruling, you can check out Jarrett Stetman's report in today's show notes. GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley defeated former President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C.'s GOP primary. The primary was held on Sunday and was Haley's first victory over Trump. According to the Associated Press, Haley won 62.8 percent of the vote, while Trump won 33.3 percent. Haley weighed in on her victory on X, saying Republicans closest to Washington's dysfunction,
Starting point is 00:03:25 know that Donald Trump has brought nothing but chaos and division for the past eight years. It's time to start winning again and move our nation forward. Meanwhile, the Trump campaign's national press secretary, Caroline Levitt, had a very different take. She told the Daily Caller News Foundation that while Nikki had been soundly rejected throughout the rest of America, she was just crowned queen of the swamp by the lobbyists and D.C. insiders that want to protect the failed status quo. The swamp has claimed their queen, according to Leavitt. Tomorrow is Super Tuesday, and more than a dozen states as well as one U.S. territory will hold primaries or caucuses. And I'm going to be sitting down with Heritage Action for America's Executive Vice President Ryan Walker on tomorrow morning show to talk about what exactly to expect on Super Tuesday.
Starting point is 00:04:18 So be sure to catch that interview Tuesday morning. Well, over the weekend, Vice President Kamala Harris called for a ceasefire for the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. Harris made the comments while in Selma, Alabama on Sunday. She was speaking at an event for the 59th anniversary of Bloody Sunday. Here's what she had to say via MSNBC. Hamas has shown no regard for innocent life, including for the people of Gaza, who have suffered under its rule for almost two decades. And Hamas still holds dozens of hostages for nearly 100,
Starting point is 00:05:02 in 50 days now. Innocent men and women, including American citizens who were brutally taken from their homes and from a concert. I will repeat, the threat of Hamas poses to the people of Israel must be eliminated. And given the immense scale of suffering in Gaza, there must be an immediate ceasefire. At least the next six weeks, which is what is currently on the table. This will get the hostages out and get a significant amount of aid in. This would allow us to build something more enduring, to ensure Israel is secure, and to respect the right of the Palestinian people to dignity, freedom, and self.
Starting point is 00:06:05 determination. Hamas claims it wants a ceasefire. Well, there is a deal on the table. And as we have said, Hamas needs to agree to that deal. Let's get a ceasefire. Let's reunite the hostages with their families. And let's provide immediate relief to the people of Gaza. President Biden announced on Friday that the U.S. would airdrop both food and supplies into Gaza. In an ex post, the president said in the coming days, the United States will carry out airdrops of aid to Gaza, redouble our efforts to open a maritime corridor, and expand deliveries by land. The aid flowing into Gaza is nowhere near enough. We all need to do more, and the United States will do more, according to Biden. The U.S. Central Command and Royal Dordadian Air,
Starting point is 00:07:03 Air Force released a statement on Saturday about the airdrops. They said U.S. Central Command and the Royal Jordanian Air Force conducted a combined humanitarian assistance airdrop into Gaza on March 2nd between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Gaza time to provide a central relief to civilians affected by the ongoing conflict. The statement also said that these airdrops are part of a sustained effort to get more aid into Gaza, including by expanding the flow of aid through land corridors and routes. College grads, listen up. You may find this story interesting and, well, frankly, a little bit depressing.
Starting point is 00:07:47 A newly released poll from the Strata Institute for the Future of Work and the Burning Glass Institute provides some grim information about college graduates. According to the report's executive summary, in spite of a. historically tight labor market, the under-employment of college graduates remains stubbornly high. Over 52% of graduates are under-employed a year after graduation. Even a decade after graduation, 45% of graduates are under-employed. The report says that among workers who have earned a bachelor's degree only about half secure employment in a college-level job within a year of graduation and the
Starting point is 00:08:32 other half are under-employed, that is, working in jobs that do not require a degree or make meaningful use of college-level skills. The executive summary also notes that there's a strong connection between internships and college-level employment after graduation, controlling for factors like gender, race, ethnicity, and institutional characteristics. The odds of under employment for graduates who had at least one internship are 48.5% lower than those who had no internship, and the benefits associated with completing an internship are relatively strong across degree fields. The Washington Times notes that liberal arts and humanitarian majors struggled the most, but the report found the biology, physics, psychology, and communications majors also failed to
Starting point is 00:09:25 secure related positions. We'll leave a link in today's show notes if you want to dive a little bit deeper into the findings of this study. And for a little more world news today, Haiti is in a state of emergency as of Sunday night. The Associated Press reports that authorities in Haiti have ordered a nighttime curfew after an explosion of violence when gang gunmen overran two big prisons and freed thousands of inmates over the weekend. The Associated Press further reports. that a 72-hour state of emergency began Sunday night. The government said it would set out to find the killers, kidnappers, and other criminals who fled. Finance Minister and Acting Prime Minister Michael Patrick Bavere said in a statement
Starting point is 00:10:13 that the police were ordered to use all legal means at their disposal to enforce the curfew and apprehend all offenders. The U.S. Embassy in Haiti said in a security alert that U.S. citizens in Haiti should, depart Haiti as soon as possible by commercial or other privately available transportation options in light of the current security situation and infrastructure challenges. The alert also said U.S. citizens wishing to depart, Port-au-Prince should monitor local news and information on security conditions from commercial transportation providers and should arrange to leave Haiti when security conditions permit doing so.
Starting point is 00:10:53 And with that, that's going to do it for today's episode. Thanks so much for joining us here on the Daily Signal's top news.
