President Trump says he's moving ahead with plans to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico.
I'm Virginia Allen, and this is the Daily Signal's top news in 10 for Thursday, February 27th.
Tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico will go into effect on March 4th, according to President Trump.
Trump announced the tariffs in a post on true social this morning.
The president said he was going ahead with the plan to impose tariffs over the drugs that are pouring into our country
from Mexico and Canada.
The president specifically referenced the threat of fentanyl, which has claimed the lives of
thousands of Americans in recent years.
Until the flood of drugs is stopped or seriously limited, Trump says that starting on March
4th, a 25% tariff will be applied to all goods from Mexico and Canada.
Speaking to press in the Oval Office, Trump said he has not seen the flow of drugs coming
into the U.S. decrease enough to not move ahead with plans to impose the tariffs.
I don't see it at all. No, not on drugs. We've done a great job. If you look at Tom Holman,
he's been incredible, and Christy, they've done a great job in terms of the border.
But the drugs continue to pour into our country, killing hundreds of thousands of people.
We're losing substantially more than 100,000 people. I mean, dead. They're dead.
The families are destroyed after that happens.
Canadian energy products, including oil and electricity, will only be levied with a 10% tariff.
Trump also announced an additional 10% tariff on Chinese imports.
This is in addition to the 10% tariff that Trump already put on Chinese imports earlier this month.
The announcement today follows previous threats that Trump made earlier in his administration
to impose these tariffs on Mexico and Canada.
Trump had reached an agreement with Canada and Mexico to pause those tariffs.
but again, they will now take effect on March 4th.
Both Canada and Mexico have expressed intentions
to impose tariffs on the U.S. in response
and the Chinese embassy in the U.S.
condemn the tariffs,
suggesting that they could lead to a trade war.
Stay tuned.
Trump met with British Prime Minister Kier Starrmer
at the White House today.
The two leaders discussed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine
and global trade issues.
Starrmer emphasized the need for long-term
term security guarantees with Ukraine. But the two leaders discussed a host of other issues.
The leaders held a joint press conference in the Oval Office and the Daily Sidel's White House correspondent,
Elizabeth Mitchell, a familiar voice on this podcast, was in the Oval Office for that press conference.
She asked Trump to comment on concerns over free speech violations in the UK. For a bit of background,
vice president J.D. Vance recently gave a speech at the Munich Security Conference,
During that speech, Vance said that free speech was in retreat in the UK.
Here's the exchange between the Daily Signal, Trump, and Vance inside the Oval Office today.
In his remarks at the Munich Security Conference, Vice President Vance condemned free speech violations in the UK, particularly, could you respond?
What is your message?
I have an idea.
We have the man right here.
Come on.
Let's go, J.D.
We're putting you on stage.
Great.
Yeah.
Look, I said what I said, which is that.
We do have, of course, a special relationship with our friends in the UK and also with some of our European allies.
But we also know that there have been infringements on free speech that actually affect not just the British.
Of course, what the British do in their own country is up to them, but also affect American technology companies and by extension American citizens.
So that is something that we'll talk about today at lunch.
British Prime Minister Kier Starrmer then jumped in defending the UK's record on free speech.
We've had free speech for a very, very long time in the United Kingdom, and it will last for a very, very long time.
Well, no, I mean, certainly we wouldn't want to reach across U.S. citizens, and we don't, and that's absolutely right.
But in relation to free speech in the UK, I'm very proud of our history there.
The UK has been criticized for limiting free speech, especially after a woman in the UK was arrested for praying outside an abortion clinic back in 2022.
You can follow all of Elizabeth's reporting from the White House at daily signal.com.
And you can follow Elizabeth on X at the, a Liz Mitchell.
That's the E-L-I-Z-M-I-T-H-E-L-L-L.
The Trump administration is moving ahead with aggressive plans to root out DEI or diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in our schools.
Today, the U.S. Department of Education launched the end-D-E-E-E-I-E-E-I-E-E-I, or diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in our schools.
eI dot ed.gov website. So you can check that out if you want to check it out to see what it's all about.
But here with us to discuss more is a former teacher and the Daily Signal's investigative columnist
Tony Kennett. Tony, thanks for being with us.
Always a pleasure, Virginia, always.
All right. So let's talk about this portal. What exactly is it? How does it work?
So it's actually an offshoot of an idea by Indiana Attorney General Todd Rakita, who with the Daily
Signal in our Republican National Convention,
coverage back in last summer told us that there were so many cases of DEI of critical race theory,
of either sexual or gender discrimination in the interest of discriminating to try to correct
historic outcomes in public schools, either in curriculum or in the administration or in any aspect
of how the school operates. So Todd Rakeeta launched this portal to say, hey, if you see something
that you don't like, let us know and we'll investigate it.
The media lost their minds, vanity fair, salon, all of the LGBTQ plus outlets and magazines through a fit.
And then it actually helped the Attorney General's office investigate some very concerning instances of racial discrimination, not just against straight white male students, but against individuals of all backgrounds.
So now the Department of Education through the Heritage Foundation Fellow and the co-founder of Moms for Liberty, Tiffany Justice, they're launching this at a broader national scale.
and this brings in higher education.
This brings in any educational institution that is taking tax dollars.
And what I'm seeing is an administration that instead of just going through pressing Control
F, finding something and just deleting things with reckless abandon, which is what it was
suggested they might do, they are going to take this piece by piece and investigate instances
so this can be cataloged, brought before the appropriate congressional committees, brought before
the Attorney General's office through Pam Bondi.
actually brought to rest before the American people. Wow, big effort here. Again, if you want to check out
that website, it's enddei.edu.ED.gov. But Tony, there is a significant reason, of course, to talk
about education and talk about this portal that we have and having you on today. But there's
another reason as well. We have a big announcement coming from the Daily Signal podcast here today.
You have been hosting your own podcast for quite some time. You're going to continue
hosting that, but we are also so excited to announce that starting next week, you're going to be
jumping in as the new host of this podcast of Top News in 10. Congratulations. I'm really excited.
Thank you. I really found that the most popular segment of our radio, TV, podcast, live stream,
this amalgamation of new media and getting the show out that the most popular segment was the
Quick News Roundup. In fact, so many submissions of clips of the insanity,
that's going on day to day, it's encompassing more and more of the show.
So Rob Blewey, and then of course, your excellent wisdom have decided that maybe if we take
that funnel it into top news intends so we can get this out at the crack of dawn so that we can
get the headlines before we're even at work.
It's a really great way to say thank you to our subscribers, listeners, and supporters of the
Daily Signal and make sure that we are giving them the most consistent and up-to-date headlines
before they go into their day.
Tony, we certainly appreciate your work that you have done for the Daily Signal for so long.
And, you know, we thought, we were like, oh, we don't think you're wearing enough hats.
We really need you to put on another hat.
But we're giving you this out because we know that you are such a fantastic podcast.
I was you're so good at following the news.
It's staying in the weeds of what is happening.
And it has been just such an honor for me.
And it's so fun.
I'm a little envious of you getting to step in and co-host the show.
It is such a awesome show to get to.
to host every single weekday.
And fear not for our listeners.
I'm not going anywhere.
I'm just going to be focusing a little bit more on written stories of covering the border
and immigration issues and other critical issues that we were seeing come out of this administration
in the coming days, weeks, months, years.
So the dayless little team is stronger than ever.
And Tony, I'm just so excited to watch you really take top news in 10 to the next level
and break down so many of the things that you already break down on your show.
that is a lot of commentary where you just really dig deep into several topics.
You also are, you're so active on X.
You're constantly breaking news on there.
Too active on X.
It's like the, it's the reality of journalists these days.
You have to be.
You actually just had some interesting news on the Epstein files on your X today.
So the Epstein files was something Americans have been waiting for.
Cash Patel made promises about it.
Attorney General Pam Bondi said, don't worry, we are getting this done.
It's coming.
Then she went on Jesse Water Show and said,
we were going to be releasing them on February 27th.
Now the day is here.
Of course, they have a lot of things to redact to make sure that, for example, victims are not identified.
But they hosted a little influencer summit at the White House or at the Eisenhower executive office building and passed out binders of this phase one release.
And the controversy is wild.
And I'm sure we'll spend days talking about the contents on the inside or the lack thereof.
Congress is now already getting involved.
But in the meantime, there is a PR nightmare in full swing because very quickly the influencers
now have the binders, which were not released to the public.
The files were actually not posted on the DOJ and then binders given to these what the White
House called independent journalists and these conservative influencers.
So what the public was treated to was a good two to three hours of these popular accounts,
many of whom I'm friends with, and I don't blame them for going to an event like this, I certainly would have,
but that we're posting pictures of themselves holding the binders as Americans are going,
I don't care about you doing a photo op with the binder of the Epstein files phase one, release the files to the public.
So an interesting move to be sure it's getting a lot of blowback.
Fascinating. Well, if you all want to dig a little deeper into that, I know Tony is going to be covering so much on that.
today this week in the coming days on the Tony Kinnett cast. So check that out. And Tony, once again,
thank you for jumping into Top News starting next week. Once again, that is going to be shifting to
a morning show, but we will have Victor Davis Hansen, his show dropping here on the Daily Signal podcast
in the afternoon. So fear not, there's still lots of content coming morning, noon and night
from the Daily Signal and right here on the Daily Signal podcast. Tony, thank you. Always a pleasure.

He's also a social media influencer.
He and his brother Tristan have been accused of organized criminal activity in Romania and Britain.
They face human trafficking and sexual exploitation charges in Romania.
Recently, Romanian authorities lifted their travel ban, which allowed the brothers to return to the U.S.
The brothers deny the allegations that have been levied against them.
The brothers plane landed in Florida today, but Florida Governor Ron DeSantis did not have any words of welcome for the brothers.
DeSanta said Florida is not a place where you're welcome with that type of conduct in the air.
And we have some sad news to close out today's show.
Renown actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Aracawa and their dog were found dead in their Santa Fe, New Mexico home.
The actor was 95 and his wife was 63.
There were no signs of foul play, but an investigation is underway.
Hackman was a two-time Oscar winner and was celebrated for his roles in films like the French Connection and Unforgiven.
With that, that's going to do it for today's episode.
