I'm Virginia Allen, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Wednesday, May 1st.
Here are today's headlines.
Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clark wasn't truthful in her Senate confirmation testimony.
The Daily Signals, Mary Margaret Ollahan, broke the news on this story last night.
So let's set the stage.
Before Assistant Attorney General, Kristen Clark became one of the Justice Department's top leaders,
Clark was allegedly involved in a violent domestic dispute.
Court documents, records, and text messages show that the incident ended in her arrest and was
ultimately expunged. But during her Senate confirmation, Clark specifically denied ever having been
arrested for or accused of committing a violent crime. Clark was nominated by then-President-elect Joe Biden
back in January of 2021 and was later confirmed by the U.S. Senate in May 2021 to lead the DOJ's
Civil Rights Division. Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris celebrated Clark as the first black woman
to head the Civil Rights Division. They promised that she would focus on fighting voter suppression
and hate crimes across the country. During her confirmation, Arkansas Republican Senator Tom Cotton
asked then nominee Clark if, since becoming a legal adult she had ever been arrested for or
accused of committing a violent crime against any person. No, was the response from Clark.
But messages, as well as records obtained and authenticated by the Daily Signal, indicate that
Clark was not forthcoming in this statement. Clark's ex-husband, Reginald Avery, alleged to the
American Accountability Foundation's Tom Jones in 2021, but Clark attacked him with a knife,
deeply slicing his finger to the bone on the night of July 4th, 2006.
This was while they were married and living in Maryland.
According to messages and documents that the Daily Signal reviewed,
police arrested Clark that very night.
Clark has not responded to the Daily Signal's request for comments on this story.
Republican Utah Senator Mike Lee has now called for Clark's resignation.
Lee wrote on X last night that Kristen Clark is in charge of enforcing civil rights law.
She enforces those laws aggressively against anyone who sneezes near an abortion clinic,
and not at all against those who vandalized churches.
She lied under oath during her confirmation proceedings, and according to Lee, she should resign.
In New York City, NYPD cleared out an anti-Israel protest at Columbia University on Tuesday night.
A large number of those protesters were taken into custody.
Columbia University President Manucci Schaffick wrote a letter to NYPD Tuesday night asking for assistance after a group of students violently entered and barricaded Hamilton Hall on the campus on Monday.
The president wrote in the letter, the events on campus Monday night have left us no choice.
With the support of the university's trustees, I have determined that the building occupation, the encampments, and related disruptions pose a clear and president.
danger to persons, property, and the substantial functioning of the university, and require
the use of emergency authority to protect persons and property.
With the utmost regret, we request the NYPD's help to clear all individuals from
Hamilton Hall and all campus encampments.
Well, then, around 9.30 p.m., CBS News reports that police in riot gear entered Hamilton
Hall and began the process of clearing protesters throughout the campus.
At the same time, the university put out a shelter-in-place order to students.
During the operation, protesters yelled at the police and yelled slogans like Free Free Palestine.
CBS reported that, according to police, dozens of people were taken into custody, and three encampments were dismantled.
According to reports, the university said that the campus will be restricted to students and employees only for now.
Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Green held a press conference on Capitol Hill this morning.
During that press conference, she renewed her pledge to call for a vote to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson next week.
Green has filed a motion to vacate Johnson based on his work to secure appropriations for foreign aid.
She said that she thinks every member of Congress needs to take that vote and let the chips fall where they may.
She went on to say that next week she will be calling this motion to vacate.
Green says she is working to Al's Johnson because Johnson's presence jeopardizes Republican electoral chances.
We have to have a Republican majority in January and under Mike Johnson's leadership, we're not going to have one.
Because Republican voters, just like Thomas Massey just said, Hakeem Jeffries is endorsing Mike Johnson because he knows Mike Johnson's leadership is going to hand.
the House majority to the Democrats in January.
It will make our voters not want to vote for him.
They're gonna turn out and vote for President Trump
top of the ticket and then they're gonna skip
Republican House members because they're disgusted
with Mike Johnson, his leadership,
his speakership in the Uniparty.
Green also defined the Uniparty as a coalition
to make Ukraine great again.
She held up a blue hat with yellow letters
that had MUGA printed.
on the front. Yeah, that's what this is. The Unip Party is make Ukraine great again. The Uniparty is
all about funding every single foreign war. They think this is the business model that needs to be done.
We will keep you posted for what happens next week with Marjorie Taylor Green and House Speaker Mike
Johnson. The White House is reportedly considering potentially targeted tax cuts on white Americans
to create racial wealth equality.
That's according to a report from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
The Treasury Department highlighted in an analysis published in March
that increasing taxes on capital gains in income-based wealth
would reduce racial wealth inequality for black and Hispanic families.
Preston Brasher's is a research fellow for tax policy here at the Heritage Foundation's
Grover M. Herman Center for the federal budget.
and he called the proposal economic suicide.
He told the daily caller that before the tax ever took effect,
investors would rush to pull their money out of equities subject to such exorbitant tax rates.
U.S. businesses would be starved for capital and business activity would slow to a crawl.
Ultimately, corporate income and capital gains income would fall off a cliff,
so the net result would be less tax revenue, not more.
The middle class and working class would be slid.
with mass layoffs and low real wages.
With that, that's going to do it for today's episode.
