Starting point is 00:00:00 At Capital One, we're more than just a credit card company. We're people just like you who believe in the power of yes. Yes to new opportunities. Yes to second chances. Yes to a fresh start. That's why we've helped over 4 million Canadians get access to a credit card. Because at Capital One, we say yes, so you don't have to hear another no. What will you do with your yes?
Starting point is 00:00:24 Get the yes you've been waiting for at Capital One.ca.ca. slash yes. Terms and conditions apply. I'm Virginia Allen and I'm Samantha Sherris. And this is the Daily Signal Top News for Friday, January 20th. Here are today's headlines. Today, thousands of pro-life advocates were in Washington, D.C. for the 50th annual March for Life. This was the first national March for Life since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. I was at the March earlier today and I had the chance to talk with pro-life advocate and president of Concern Women for America, Penny Nance. I asked Nance why she and so many in the pro-life movement felt it was important to keep marching, even though Roe v. Wade has already been overturned. This is what she told me.
Starting point is 00:01:23 It's an option for us to get together and celebrate. This is a joyful gathering and also for us to get together and talk about what's next. Nance also told me that while about half of the states across America have laws on the books to protect life, that means there are still many states that have a long way to go in passing laws to protect the unborn. She said that she and the whole of the pro-life community is committed to continuing their fight for life in the years ahead. Marchers walked from the National Mall to the capital this year, which is a change from previous years. The march used to end to the Supreme Court, but now the pro-life community is calling on lawmakers in Congress, to take action and protect life.
Starting point is 00:02:08 Before the march began, notable speakers delivered remarks to the crowd. One of those speakers was Dr. Christina Francis. She is the CEO-elect of the American Association of Pro-Life OBGYNs. I spoke with Frances, and she told me that she was proud to represent the Pro-Life medical community. I was honored to be invited to speak from the stage today, and I see myself when I'm up there as representing the tens of thousands of pro-life medical professionals. across this country that really desire to practice per life medicine. They desire to care for the lives of both of their patients. Other notable speakers at the 50th March for Life include actor Jonathan
Starting point is 00:02:46 Rumi, who plays Jesus in the streaming series The Chosen and former NFL football coach Tony Dungey. The Daily Signal broke the news yesterday that a group of Republican lawmakers introduced two new pieces of pro-life legislation ahead of the March for Life. The bills aim at protecting babies with Down syndrome and stopping college campuses from distributing abortion pills to students. The first bill known as Protecting Life on College Campus Act of 2023 was introduced by Republican Texas Representative Chip Roy in the House of Representatives and Republican Montana Senator Steve Daines in the Senate. If passed, the bill would prohibit
Starting point is 00:03:34 federal funds from going to any higher education institution that hosts or is affiliated with a student-based service site that provides abortion drugs or abortions to students or university employees. Representative Roy told the Daily Signal that a college dorm room is no place to have a do-it-yourself abortion and the American taxpayer should not be paying for the destruction of innocent human life on our college campuses. The second bill introduced by Senator Daines is called the Protecting Individuals with Down Syndrome Act. If passed, the legislation would aim to make it illegal for a doctor to knowingly perform an abortion because the baby has or might have Down syndrome.
Starting point is 00:04:16 Dane said in a statement, every life is created with God-given dignity and potential, no matter how small or how many chromosomes they may have. Yesterday, the Supreme Court announced that the justices still do not know who leaked the draft opinion. of Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. So the House Judiciary Committee is taking matters into its own hands. Fox News reported last night that the House Judiciary Committee plans to investigate the leak in hopes of identifying who released the draft of the opinion to the press.
Starting point is 00:04:52 The Supreme Court released its report yesterday after conducting 126 interviews with nearly 100 staff from the Supreme Court. We will keep you all posted as this story continues to develop. and we have more details about how the House Judiciary Committee plans to conduct their investigation. Another tech company has announced major layoffs. Google and its parent company Alphabet has announced layoffs of 12,000 people. That's about 6% of its workforce. The layoffs are scheduled to begin immediately in America, but will take a little longer for employees in other countries.
Starting point is 00:05:30 Google is reportedly making these layoffs due to fears of a coming recession. Google is offering the employees 16 weeks of severance pay and an additional two weeks of severance for every year they've worked at the tech company. Google is far from the only tech company making layoffs right now. Amazon recently announced it would cut 18,000 jobs, and Microsoft just announced earlier this week 10,000 layoffs. Of course, Twitter under Elon Musk, has also let more than half of its staff go. And that'll do it for today's episode.
