Starting point is 00:00:01 I'm Virginia Allen. I'm Samantha Sherriss. And this is the DailyS Legal Top News for Thursday, January 5th. Here are today's headlines. Earlier today, President Joe Biden announced a plan to limit the number of illegal aliens coming into the United States. The plan expands an already existing program that limits the number of Venezuelan immigrants that can enter America each month. But this new plan is specifically intended to limit the number of migrants entering America. illegally from the nations of Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti, and Venezuela to 30,000 per month. Here's how it will work. Migrants from Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti, and Venezuela will be allowed to apply from abroad for entry into America.
Starting point is 00:00:58 They have to have someone here in America who will agree to sponsor them. If their application is approved, they'll be allowed to work in the United States for two years. But if they fail to use this new legal process, migrants from... from Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti, and Venezuela, who attempt to cross into the United States illegally, will not be allowed to apply for legal entry in the future. During the announcement of the plan, Biden attacked Republicans,
Starting point is 00:01:26 saying that Republicans needed to take action on issues related to immigration per Yahoo Finance. But if the most extreme Republicans continue to demagogue this issue and reject solutions, I'm left with only one choice, to act on my own, do as much as I can. in my own to try to change the atmosphere. Biden also announced that he will be visiting the border for the first time since taking
Starting point is 00:01:49 office. The president will be in El Paso, Texas on Sunday. Who will be the next Speaker of the House? That is still to be determined as of early evening Thursday. Representative Kevin McCarthy of California lost the ninth ballot vote this afternoon. McCarthy needs 218 votes to win the the speakership, meaning he can only lose four Republican votes. About 20 Republicans have repeatedly been voting against McCarthy. So the question is, why? Why is there a coalition of Republicans who are not voting for McCarthy? What do they want him to agree to before they back him? Representative Chip Roy of Texas answered those questions on Fox News yesterday.
Starting point is 00:02:38 I want to be able to have enough members of the Rules Committee that we can block bad bill. So that could be three, that could be four. And I want to make sure that Republicans are the ones making sure that those bills get through the Rules Committee to the floor. And I want an open amendment process. And I want to be able to have the ability to make points of order on the floor if amendments aren't going to be relevant if they're not germane, et cetera. Representative Bob Good of Virginia is another Republican refusing to back McCarthy. He told the Daily Signal today that he will never vote for Kevin McCarthy. Good said that he is so thankful that 20 members of Congress have shown the courage to do what they know to be best for the country.
Starting point is 00:03:17 He specified that in his opinion, doing what is best for the country means taking steps toward true transformational change to not continue what we've always done, to not vote for the establishment status quo, to not vote for a demonstrable failed leader in Kevin McCarthy. Voting in the House will continue until a speech. is elected as no business can move forward without a speaker. The son of Mexican drug kingpin and cartel leader Al Chapo has been arrested by authorities in Mexico. The son, Ovido Guzman, is considered the leader of part of the Sinaloa cartel, Fox News reports. He's a drug trafficker and wanted by the United States. Mexican National Guard made the arrest amid a firefight with cartels.
Starting point is 00:04:06 Mexico detained Guzman in 2019, but ultimately released him to prevent a dangerous confrontation with cartel members. The arrest comes just days before Biden plans to travel to Mexico to meet with President Lopez Obrador. Pennsylvania Democrat Governor-elect Josh Shapiro announced today that he chose Republican Al Schmidt to be Secretary of State of Pennsylvania. Schmidt previously served as one of Philadelphia's city commissioners. and took a firm stance in the 2020 election against former President Donald Trump's stolen election claims. Shapiro said that Al Schmidt has a proven track record of defending our democracy, protecting voting rights, and standing up to extremism, even in the face of grave threat. The nomination will move to the state Senate for confirmation.
Starting point is 00:04:59 If confirmed as Secretary, Schmidt will act as the state's top elections official. We're going to leave it there for today. for listening to the Daily Signal's top news. Starting point is 00:05:33 Here's a little preview of what's to come with our interview tomorrow. The work that's being done by these members should not be lambasted as chaos or nefarious in any way. I think this is how the system was designed. It's a healthy process. We get to see these debates in public, but the institution as a whole, Congress, is fundamentally broken in a number of ways.
