I'm Samantha Chiris.
I'm Prigina Allen.
And this is the Daily Signal top news for Tuesday, October 4th.
Here are today's headlines.
President Biden is set to visit Florida tomorrow to survey damage from Hurricane Ian,
which killed more than 100 people, the New York Post reported.
The Washington Examiner reported earlier today that Hurricane Ian will likely be the deadliest storm
to hit the Sunshine State since 1935.
White House Press Secretary Karin Jean-Pierre announced today during the press briefing
that the president will meet with Florida governor Ron DeSantis during his visit.
President Biden was also in Puerto Rico on Monday to assess damage from Hurricane Fiona.
CBS reported the Category 1 storm, which hit the island on September 18th,
likely killed at least 25 people, according to the Puerto Rico Department of Health.
The president announced $60 million in federal funding aimed at helping the island rebuild after the hurricane.
Let's take a listen to part of Biden's remarks from Monday, per the hill.
Somehow, the people of Puerto Rico keep getting back up with resilience and determination.
Quite frankly, it's pretty extraordinary when you're looking from afar.
And you deserve every bit of help your country can give you.
That's what I'm determined to do, and that's what I promise you.
After Maria, Congress approved billions of dollars for Puerto Rico, much of it not having
gotten here initially.
We're going to make sure you get every single dollar promised.
And I'm determined to help Puerto Rico bill faster than in the past and stronger and better prepared for the future.
The Supreme Court heard oral arguments today about an Alabama redistricting case called Merrill v. Mulligan.
The case examines if the state's new congressional map negatively impacts black voters, as the New York Post reported.
Fox News reported that after Alabama redrew its congressional map following the 2020 census, the NAA,
LACP, some Alabama voters, and Greater Birmingham Ministries filed a lawsuit,
alleging the new map put majority black counties into majority white congressional districts
in low enough numbers that black voters have no electoral influence.
A lower federal court ordered the state to redraw its maps before November's general election,
a decision the Supreme Court stopped.
The Supreme Court also agreed to hear eight other cases on Monday,
according to scotusblog.com.
And later this week, be sure to check out our Daily Signal podcast interview edition
with the host of the SCOTUS 101 podcast where we dive a little bit deeper into this case
and several other cases coming before the Supreme Court this term.
North Korea reportedly conducted its longest-ever weapons test that flew over Japan on Tuesday,
the Associated Press reported.
BBC also reported that the ballistic missile traveled roughly 2,800 miles before falling into
the Pacific Ocean.
and had the potential to reach Guam.
It's the first time North Korea has launched a missile over Japan since 2017, BBC also reported.
National Security Council spokeswoman Adrian Watson said in a statement on Monday
that the United States will continue its efforts to limit the DPRK's ability
to advance its prohibited ballistic missile and weapons of mass destruction programs,
including with allies and UN partners.
President Biden reportedly spoke with Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Koshirochee,
today about North Korea's missile launch and their next steps, the Associated Press reported.
President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have unveiled a $625 million security package to Ukraine.
They share the details of that package during a meeting with Ukraine President Zelensky on Tuesday.
The Hill reports that the U.S. has spent over $17.5 billion in aid to Ukraine since President Biden took office.
According to a White House readout of the meeting, the president vowed to continue supporting Ukraine as it defends itself from Russian aggression for as long as it takes.
He also affirmed the continued readiness of the United States to impose severe costs on any individual entity or country that provides support to Russia's purported annexation.
