I'm Kate Trinko.
And I'm John Pop.
And this is the Daily Signal, top news for Tuesday, March 7.
Here are today's headlines.
The White House proposed today a new tax hike on wealthy Americans.
President Joe Biden's budget would increase the Medicare tax on income of 400,000 or above, from 3.8% to 5%.
In a press release, the White House wrote, since Medicare was passed, income and wealth inequality in the United States have increased dramatically.
By asking those with the highest income,
to contribute modestly more, we can keep the Medicare programs strong for decades to come.
The Biden White House says that changes will mean that Medicare is solvent for another 25 years
without any benefits being cut. However, Medicare is already a huge part of income taxes,
with 17% of federal income taxes equaling Medicare payments in 2019. It's estimated by 2040
that nearly 27% of federal income taxes will be needed to fund Medicare payments.
from the Treasury.
Of the four Americans who were kidnapped in Mexico, two are confirmed dead, while another
two survived and are now receiving medical treatment in Texas.
State Department spokesman Ned Price said, per CNN, we want to see accountability
for the violence that has been inflicted on these Americans that tragically led to the
death of two of them.
Reportedly, the Americans were in Mexico so that one of them could get a cosmetic surgery
procedure.
White House Press Secretary Karin Jean-Pierrez said to
also per CNN, attacks on U.S. citizens are unacceptable no matter where or under what circumstances
they happen. And we will continue to work closely with the Mexican government to ensure justice
is done in this case. Five women with the help of the Center for Reproductive Rights are suing
the state of Texas over its abortion laws. Prior to the Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade,
Texas banned most abortions after a baby's heartbeat was detected. Roe being overturned triggered another
Texas law banning abortions. According to a press release from the Center for Reproductive Rights,
the lawsuit seeks clarity regarding when doctors can provide abortions under the state's
exception for medical emergencies to protect the life and health of the pregnant person.
Four of the five female plaintiffs ultimately had abortions in states other than Texas.
A spokeswoman for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton told CNN that Paxton is committed to doing
everything in his power to protect mothers, families, and unborn children, and he will continue
to defend and enforce the laws duly enacted by the Texas legislature.
Florida is taking steps to protect unborn children. Republicans file bills in the Senate and
the House to ban most abortions at the six-week mark. USA Today reports that bills include
exceptions for cases in which the mother is facing severe injury or death. The fetus has a fatal
abnormality or if the pregnancy was the result of rape or incest. Right now, abortion is illegal in
Florida at the 15-week or later mark. Polling conducted for the pro-life group, Susan B. Anthony,
pro-life America found that 62 percent of Floridians support banning abortion once a heartbeat
is detected, which happens at the six-week mark. If there are exceptions for rape, incest,
or life of the mother, 58 percent of women support it, as do over three out of four Hispanics.
The legislation also would provide millions in funding for pregnancy centers and other resources to help pregnant women.
