I'm Virginia Allen. I'm Samantha Asheras. And this is the Daily Signal Top News for Tuesday, March 14th.
Here are today's headlines. The Consumer Price Index, a key measure of inflation, rose 0.4% in February, up 6% from February of last year.
That's according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The latest numbers were released this morning and reveal that the shelter index rose 0.8%, the food index rose 0.4%, the Transportation Services Index rose 1.1%, and the gasoline index rose 1%.
Looking at energy costs specifically, the fuel oil index decreased 7.9%. The utility gas service index decreased 8%.
and the energy index decreased 0.6%.
The used car and truck index decreased 2.8%.
President Joe Biden spoke about the report earlier today.
He said today's report shows annual inflation is down by a third from this summer
at a time when the unemployment rate remains near a 50-year low.
That is the slowest annual increase since September 2021.
I will continue working to lower costs for hardworking Americans.
so they have a little more breathing room at the end of the month.
E.J. and Tony is a research fellow for regional economics here at the Heritage Foundation's Center for
Data Analysis. He told us that February's CPI report did not contain any significant surprises.
Although the headline number continues to decrease inflation is far from dead, according to E.J.
And Tony added that prices rose 0.4% in the month of February.
that may not sound like much, but at that monthly rate, prices will double in less than 16 years.
Furthermore, the declining headline number is still three times the target 2% rate.
Those crowing about 6% inflation being less than 9% inflation are damning with faint praise.
President Joe Biden has signed an executive order that requires background checks for all gun sales.
Biden signed the executive order while in Monterey Park, California.
As you may recall from our previous reporting, a gunman shot and killed 11 people at a dance hall during a lunar New Year celebration back in January.
During his trip, Biden also met with the families and community impacted by the shooting, Fox News reports.
In a White House statement about the order, Biden said,
I continue to call on Congress to take additional action to reduce gun violence, including by banning assault.
weapons and high-capacity magazines, requiring background checks for all gun sales, requiring
safe storage of firearms, funding my comprehensive Safer America plan, and expanding community
violence intervention and prevention strategies. The president also said, in the meantime,
my administration will continue to do all that we can, with an existing authority to make our
communities safer. Alan Gottlieb, the founder and executive vice president of second
Amendment Foundation told the Daily Caller News Foundation, Biden has always had an anti-gun agenda,
and on this important constitutional issue has never let the courts, public opinion, or the Bill of
Rights get in his way. Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis fired back Tuesday at President Joe Biden
after the president defended transgender surgeries and procedures for children. DeSantis said in a
Tuesday morning tweet, it is not sinful to prohibit the mutilation of minors. It is not acceptable for the
federal government to mandate that procedures like sex change operations be allowed for kids.
The governor was responding to Biden's remarks on the Florida Medical Board banning transgender
surgeries, hormones, and so-called puberty blockers for children. Biden suggested that the state's
effort to protect children are cruel.
Let's take a listen to some of Biden's comments he made during an interview with The Daily Show with Cal Penn.
What's going on in Florida is, as my mother would say, close to sinful.
I mean, it's just terrible what they're doing.
It's not like a kid wakes up one morning and says, you know, I decided I want to become a man or I want to become a woman or I want to change.
I mean, what are they thinking about here?
They're human beings.
They love, they have feelings, they have inclinations that are, I mean, it just to me is, I don't know, it's cruel.
And the way we do it is we make sure we pass legislation like we passed on same-sex marriage.
You mess with that, you're breaking the law, and you're going to be held accountable.
Team DeSantis also responded to the president's remarks with a video that shows gruesome photos of the effects of transgender surgeries, including mesectomies and skin grafts.
side by side with Biden's remarks.
The DeSantis War Room tweeted,
Biden thinks it's cruel that Florida is not allowing experimental sex change operations for kids.
And the governor's press secretary called it incredulous that the president of the United States
attempts to make a moral argument for surgically altering children in the name of radical gender ideology.
An American drone was downed in the Black Sea on Tuesday, and Russia is responsible.
A Russian fighter aircraft collided with an unmanned American drone known as a MQ9 Reaper.
The drone's propeller was damaged when it was hit, forcing it down into the international waters of the Black Sea.
The U.S. is calling Russia's actions a brazen violation of international law.
U.S. Air Force General James B. Hecker said this unsafe and unprofessional act by the Russians nearly caused both aircraft to crash.
Hecker added that the U.S. and allied aircraft will continue to operate in international airspace, and we call on the Russians to conduct themselves professionally and safely.
The American drone was lost in the crash, according to the U.S. European Command.
The Russian Defense Ministry is claiming the American drone flew too close to the Russian border.
Russia claims they scrambled their fighter jets to intercept the drone but did not hit it.
Instead, they say the American drone crashed after making a sharp maneuver.
The American drones are multi-million dollar aircraft.
And that's going to do it for today's episode.
