And this is the Daily Signal Top News for Thursday, April 27.
Here are today's headlines.
I don't think the suit has merit.
Those are the words of Florida governor, Ron DeSantis.
Remember that earlier this week, Disney filed a lawsuit against DeSantis,
accusing him of a targeted campaign of government retaliation against Mickey Mouse and all his pals.
Disney's lawsuit against Des Moose.
DeSantis is just the latest in a long series of tensions between the Florida governor and Disney.
DeSantis has been working to end Disney's self-governing status. For decades, Disney World has enjoyed
self-governing status that has allowed it to operate almost like its own city. Desantis is trying
to put that to a stop. And now Disney is suing the Florida governor. But DeSantis says the lawsuit is just political.
The story is getting so much attention that DeSantis was even asked about the conflict with Disney earlier today while he is on an international trade mission trip in Israel.
DeSantis defended his efforts to remove Disney's self-governing status per Fox News.
They had no accountability, no transparency, none of that.
And that arrangement was not good for the state of Florida.
We did not think that that should continue.
so we now have brought accountability.
And so the idea that somehow being pro-business means giving companies their own governments,
that is not what a free market is all about last I checked.
And this controversy between DeSantis and Disney, of course, comes shortly before DeSantis is expected to announce his 2024 run for president later this spring.
Just a few hours ago, House Republicans announced they,
are moving ahead with a bill, they say it will secure America's southern border.
During a press conference on Capitol Hill this afternoon, Vice Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, Michael Guest, explained exactly what is included in the bill and how it aims to solve the border crisis.
This legislation were hired thousands of new agents. It will pay retention bonus to front-line officers. We will invest in new technology. We will construct hundreds of
hundreds of miles of walls and barriers, and we will support our local and our state partners.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalese, Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, and Homeland Security
Chairman Mark Green, all introduced the bill together and said members of Congress took
extensive amounts of time to craft the bill. Republicans say the House will vote on the bill
in May. We have an update today on how the economy is doing. In the first quarter,
of 2023, the real gross domestic product, or GDP, increased at an annual rate of 1.1%. That's according to the
latest information from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. So what does this mean for how the economy is
really doing? CEO of the Job Creators Network, Alfredo Ortiz, says today's GDP report
confirms what ordinary Americans and small businesses already know. The economy,
is stagnating. Ortiz blames the stagnation on President Biden and bad Democrat policies that make it
more difficult for small businesses to operate and expand. But President Joe Biden, he disagrees.
In a statement on Twitter, the president said, today's first quarter 2023 GDP report shows
personal disposable income and consumer spending are up. Our economy remains strong. Our economy remains strong,
as we transition to stable growth.
And with 12.5 million new jobs and near record low unemployment,
my economic plan is working.
The next GDP report will be released on May 25th.
A transgender state representative from Montana has been banned from the floor of the Montana State House.
The Montana House voted to ban transgender representative Zoe Zephyr
after he violated decorum on the House chamber.
Montana recently passed a bill banning transgender treatments such as hormones and surgery on minors.
Zephyr is a man who believes he is a woman. He is 34 and the first transgender person to serve in the Montana state legislature.
While the House was debating the bill banning transgender treatments on children, Zephyr stood up and said this.
And the only thing I will say is if you vote yes on this bill and yes on these amendments, I hope the next time there's an indication.
When you bow your heads in prayer, you see the blood on your hands.
For these comments, Zephyr has been banned from the House floor, meaning he won't be able to cast votes.
Montana State Representative Braxton Mitchell told Fox News Digital, not only has my colleague violated decorum, but has broken the trust given by the other 99 representatives.
Zephyr did not apologize for his comments, but said, when there are bills targeting the LGBTQ community,
I stand up to defend my community, and I chose my words with clarity and precision, and I spoke to the real harms that these bills bring.
An American journalist has accused former President Donald Trump of raping her.
Elizabeth Jean Carroll says Trump raped her in a department store fitting room in 1996.
Apparently, Carol was helping Trump to shop for a lingerie gift for a woman.
Carol has sued Trump over the alleged incident and testified in court on Wednesday.
Her words to the court, she said, I'm here because Donald Trump raped me.
And when I wrote about it, he said it didn't happen.
He lied and shattered my reputation, and I'm here to try to get my life back.
So far, Trump has not testified in court.
The former president has denied the allegations and has called the claims made up.
Trump's lawyers say it is possible that the former president may still decide to testify.
And that's going to do it for today's episode.
