I'm Jillian Richards. And I'm John Pop. And this is the Daily Signal Top News for Thursday, September 29th.
Here are today's headlines. The Associated Press reports today that six Republican-led states are suing the Biden administration over the president's plan to forgive up to $20,000 in student loan debt for millions of Americans.
Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge is leading the lawsuit, which she filed today in a federal court in
Missouri. Rutledge said in an interview that it's patently unfair to saddle hardworking Americans
with the loan debt of those who chose to go to college. She added, the Department of Education
is required under law to collect the balance due on loans. President Biden does not have the
authority to override that. Associated Press also reports that Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska,
and South Carolina joined Arkansas in filing the lawsuit.
Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito told the Wall Street Journal Tuesday
that it crosses an important line when someone implies the court is an illegitimate institution.
Alito authored the court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade this June,
what the Hill described as the most dramatic court ruling in decades.
It goes without saying that everyone is free to express disagreement with our decisions
and to criticize our reasoning as they see fit, Alito told the journal,
but saying or implying that the court is becoming an illegitimate institution
or questioning our integrity crosses an important line.
According to a Market University Law School poll,
just 38% of Americans approve of the Supreme Court
down 22% since July 2021.
61% say they disapprove of how the court is handling its job.
President Biden said in a briefing about Hurricane,
Ian today. This could be the deadliest hurricane in Florida's history. The numbers are still unclear,
but we're hearing early reports of what may be substantial loss of life. The Hill shared some
of Biden's comments today. This could be the deadliest hurricane in Florida's history. The numbers
are still unclear, but we're hearing early reports of what may be substantial loss of life.
The hurricane made landfall along the west coast of Florida yesterday.
The storm has affected other parts of Florida as well.
The Hill reported that Governor Ron DeSantis said in a briefing this morning that over one million Floridians have lost power.
According to DeSantis, the amount of water that's been rising is basically a 500-year flood event.
The Hill reports that Biden signed a disaster declaration to give additional aid and help.
with home reparations in Florida. The president reportedly spoke with DeSantis earlier today.
Vice President Kamala Harris says the U.S. shares an important alliance with the Republic of North Korea.
She gave these remarks Thursday from Korea's demilitarized zone in an effort to affirm America's
commitment to our allies in Asia. Check out her comments shared by R&C research earlier today.
So the United States shares a very important relationship, which is an alliance with the Republic of North Korea.
And it is an alliance that is strong and enduring.
And that'll do it for today's episode.
