Starting point is 00:00:01 I'm Jillian Richards. I'm Virginia Allen. And this is the Daily Signal Top News for Friday, November 18th. Here are today's headlines. New York Representative Hakeem Jeffries, a Democrat, announced today that he'll run for House Minority Leader. If elected, he'll take the place of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who announced yesterday that she isn't running for re-election in the House leadership races. Jeffries wrote in his Friday announcement, Our top non-governmental priority, for the sake of the American people, must be retaking the majority in November 2024. Percy and N, Pelosi, as well as the current House Majority Leader, Steny Hoyer, and House Majority Whip, Jim Clyburn,
Starting point is 00:00:57 backed Jeffreys after the three announced that they would step down from their leadership posts. House Democrats, who will be the minority party next year, are holding their leadership elections on November 30th. The Biden administration is asking the Supreme Court for help to move forward with student loan forgiveness. President Biden's student loan forgiveness plan promises to forgive up to $10,000 in debt for most student loan borrowers and up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients. Two judges have blocked Biden's plan after lawsuits were filed to stop the plan from taking effect. Now, Biden is asking the Supreme Court to allow the controversial student loan forgiveness program
Starting point is 00:01:38 to go into effect while the legal challenges play out in court. According to CNN, about 26 million people have already applied for the student loan forgiveness program. Stay tuned. A Republican state lawmaker introduced a bill to ban transgender students from joining sports teams of the opposite sex. This would be for Virginia K-12 public schools and college students. sports teams. Virginia delegate Karen Greenhalge introduced this bill on Tuesday. The measure would amend an existing state law, which requires that public school students get an examination before competing in sports. The bill would add the requirement that the student's sex at birth
Starting point is 00:02:21 is also identified. The bill, if passed, would require that Virginia school sports teams would be based on biological sex rather than gender. The Virginia General Assembly will be. The Virginia General Assembly will vote on the measure after it convenes on January 11th for the 2023 legislative session. A new proposed bill could stop all federal funding to teachers unions across America. Earlier this week, Republican Texas Representative Ronning Jackson introduced a bill that would prevent federal funding from going to teachers unions. The bill is only two pages long and pretty straightforward. It simply states no federal funds may be provided to, a labor organization, the members of which are education professionals. Jackson said he introduced
Starting point is 00:03:09 the bill because corrupt teachers unions sold out our kids when they lined Democrat politicians' pockets with campaign contributions to keep students out of the classroom, and later to force masking, despite clear evidence that these decisions were harmful to kids educational and developmental growth. They have even pushed a radical and inappropriate curriculum, which seems to to indoctrinate our students with a woke, racist, and anti-American worldview. Arizona Republican Representative Debbie Lesko is one of four other members of Congress co-sponsoring Jackson's Bill. And that'll do it over today's episode.
