Starting point is 00:00:01 I'm Jillian Richards. I'm Virginia Allen. And this is the Daily Signal Top News for Thursday, December 8th. Here are today's headlines. The House of Representatives passed the so-called Respect for Marriage Act 258 to 169 today. The bill is now headed to President Joe Biden's desk. It passed the Senate 61 to 36 last week. Per the Daily Signal, every Democrat voted to pass the legislation.
Starting point is 00:00:40 39 Republicans voted for it. as well. Most of these Republicans were among the 47 members who voted yes on the bill in July. The bill seeks to codify the legalization of same-sex marriage into federal law. Republican congressmen in the House and Senate introduced religious liberty amendments to protect those who believe marriage is between a man and a woman. Senator Mike Lee of Utah introduced an amendment in the Senate, but it failed to pass. Representative Chip Roy of Texas also introduced. introduce this amendment in the House, but the Rules Committee blocked it from going to the House
Starting point is 00:01:17 floor on Monday. Here are some remarks Roy shared in the Monday hearing per Fox News. If the amendment is unnecessary, then it will fail on the floor of the House and you have no concern about bouncing into the Senate. If the amendment is important and would pass on a bipartisan basis, by the way, it was a bipartisan amendment in the Senate, and it was a close vote in the Senate, It would be important for the people's house to express its will of full protection of religious liberty for the people of the United States on such an important issue as marriage. South Dakota's Republican governor, Christy Knoem, has called for an immediate review of the state's investments to see if investments have ties to Chinese companies. Last week, Nome banned the Chinese-owned video platform TikTok from state-owned devices. The Associated Press reports that Nome asked the...
Starting point is 00:02:08 the South Dakota Investment Council today to review its investments for any connections to Chinese companies. They have seven days to complete the review. Nome wrote in a Thursday statement that South Dakotans deserve to know if their taxpayer dollars are being invested to benefit the Chinese Communist Party. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's crown prince, Mohamed bin Salman, signed a comprehensive strategic partnership with the Chinese Communist Party president Xi Jinping today. Reuters has reported that the deal includes ties with the Chinese tech giant Huawei. Huawei's presence in the Gulf region has raised U.S. security concerns. President Biden confirmed today that the women's national basketball star,
Starting point is 00:02:54 Brittany Greiner, has been released from Russian prison. CBS News reports that the U.S. government negotiated a deal to send international arms dealer Victor Bout back to Russia in exchange for Griner. The Russian Foreign Ministry said the exchange took place at Abu Dhabi International Airport in the United Arab Emirates. From there, Griner would be flown to San Antonio, Texas. The exchange comes after months of negotiations between Russia and the U.S. over Griner's February arrest. Griner was arrested and sentenced to nine and a half years in prison after Russian customs officials reportedly found cannabis in her luggage.
Starting point is 00:03:37 She had brought that to Moscow. for a WNBA playoff. The House of Representatives passed its annual defense authorization bill today. The bill now goes to the Senate before the years-end deadline. The National Defense Authorization Act allocates $847 billion in defense spending. The bill passed the House 350 to 80 with bipartisan support. The measure includes a $45 billion bonus in addition to the Biden administration's $113 billion. request. House leaders approved the bill in a two-thirds majority under suspension of the rules
Starting point is 00:04:15 as a way to fast-track the process, according to the Hill. But there might be some good news for Republicans. The measure includes language that lifts the COVID vaccine mandate for U.S. military service members. Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy previously said he would hold up the legislation if it didn't repeal the COVID vaccine mandate. The Food and Drug Administration approved doses of the updated COVID-19 vaccine for kids under age five today. The Associated Press reports that the FDA authorized these new COVID shots for children as young as six months old, though eligibility depends on the number and type of vaccine a kid has already received. Per Associated Press, the CDC is expected to sign off on the updated
Starting point is 00:05:02 shots soon. Iran's state media announced today that the state executed a man. charged with injuring a parliamentary officer. This was the first known execution linked to protests that have swept across Iran since September. Iranian and Tasman news agencies identified the protester as Mosin Shai Kari. He was reportedly convicted of waging war against God. The suspect reportedly stabbed a besiege parliamentary member at a September protest in Tehran. Iran's Mizan online reports the suspect was, sentenced to death on October 23rd and was executed by hanging this morning.
