I'm Jillian Richards.
I'm John Pop.
And this is the Daily Signal Top News for Wednesday, September 28th.
Here are today's headlines.
According to CNN live updates, Hurricane Ian has officially made landfall along the southwestern coast of Florida near Keo Costa.
With winds close to 150 miles per hour, Ian is a high-end category four hurricane according to the National Hurricane Center.
Here's Bill Weyer with CNN reporting from Punta Gorda, Florida today.
Yeah, the wind.
makes for some traumatic pictures,
but it's the blowing water that's going to make the most difference
to these people's lives for the next foreseeable future.
When this wind dies and the sun comes out,
the nightmare is just beginning for a lot of these folks.
Then comes the flooding water and the mold problems and the lost days of work.
This storm is going to hurt, John.
Governor Ron DeSantis said earlier, it's going to have major, major impacts in terms of wind, in terms of rain, in terms of flooding.
So this is going to be a nasty, nasty day, two days.
Here's Ron DeSantis' other remarks from earlier today.
A storm of this magnitude will produce catastrophic flooding and life-threatening storm surge on the Gulf Coast of Florida.
And the highest risk areas are ranging from Collier County up to Sarasota County.
The current track has the storm making landfall in Charlotte County.
If you are in any of those counties, it's no longer possible to safely evacuate.
It's time to hunker down and prepare for this storm.
This is a powerful storm that should be treated like you would treat if a tornado was approaching.
The U.S. Embassy in Russia is telling Americans to leave the country after the Russian government began sending its citizens
to replenish its military presence in Ukraine.
The Hill reports today that Russian President Vladimir Putin
called 300,000 reservists to aid Russia's military presence.
The U.S. Embassy released a security alert yesterday, stating,
Russia may refuse to acknowledge dual nationals' U.S. citizenship,
deny their access to U.S. consular assistance,
prevent their departure from Russia,
and conscript dual nationals for military service.
The embassy has urged Americans to avoid traveling to Russia
and urges Americans in Russia to leave as soon as possible
while limited travel options remain.
Vice President Kamala Harris said China's actions in the Pacific are disturbing
in a speech on board the USS Howard at Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan today.
She also promised to strengthen the United States' unofficial ties with Taiwan.
These comments came days after the U.S. pledge to defend Taiwan
against a military invasion.
Here's Harris posted by Reuters today.
China is undermining key elements of the international rules-based order.
China has challenged the freedom of the seas.
China has flexed its military and economic might to coerce and intimidate its neighbors.
And we have witnessed disturbing behavior in the East China Sea and in the South China Sea.
and in the South China Sea.
And most recently, provocations
across the Taiwan Strait.
Yikes, President Biden called on recently
deceased representative Jackie Wolorski
during a White House Hunger Caucus speech today.
During Biden's remarks at the White House
conference on hunger, nutrition, and health,
he thanked all of you here.
He singled out Wolorski for her efforts
in ending world hunger.
Biden asked, Jackie, are you,
hear, where's Jackie? He seemed to forget Wolerski, along with two of her staff members,
died in a tragic car crash in her home state of Indiana last month. Take a listen to Biden's
comments posted by the Daily Caller earlier today. I want to thank all of you here for including
bipartisan elect officials like Representative Governor, Senator Braun, Senator Booker, Representative
Jackie, are you here? Where's Jackie? I didn't think she was going to be here.
The U.K.-based Virgin Atlantic Airline just announced its new gender identity policy for uniforms
in an effort to become the most inclusive airline in the skies, as Washington Examiner reports.
As the airline writes in a press release, its new policy called the Be Yourself Campaign gives crew members,
pilots, and ground teams the option to choose which of our iconic uniforms designed by Vivian Westwood best represents them.
One video promoting the campaign, Touts the line, your uniform, your identity, your choice.
Virgin Atlantic released another video featuring comments by staff and LGBT allies on the new campaign.
Michelle Visage, a TV personality and LGBTQ plus ally, says the following.
I wanted to be involved in this campaign to affect change in this world.
I have a trans non-binary child, so for me, changing the world is my job as a mom and as a friend and an ally.
I feel fabulous, fierce, and ferocious.
And I am ready to take flight.
Tyrese Nye, a non-binary performer and activist,
also shares remarks while sporting a bright pink pencil skirt
with a matching blazer and high heels.
Here's what he had to say.
This policy allows everyone to have a seat of the table.
It's not taken away from anyone.
It's just allowing everyone from the community to just have a voice.
And that'll do it for today's episode.
