Starting point is 00:00:01 I'm Virginia Allen. I'm Samantha Sherris. And this is the Daily City of Top News for Thursday, March 23rd. Here are today's headlines. It was a busy day on Capitol Hill today. The CEO of TikTok testified before Congress and answered lawmakers' questions on the security of the platform. Both Democrats and Republicans have voiced concerns over TikTok and the Chinese Communist Party's access to user data. TikTok's parent company is bite. and is headquartered in Beijing and subject to Chinese law that requires companies to make data available to the government. But TikTok CEO Shoe Chu told members of Congress today that bite dance is not owned or controlled by the Chinese government. Chu says via now this, that America's data is safe on the platform. He said TikTok is committed to four things when it comes to protecting
Starting point is 00:01:06 user data. Take a listen. Number one, we will keep safety particularly for teenagers as a top priority for us. Number two, we will firewall protected U.S. data from unwanted foreign access. Number three, TikTok will remain a place for free expression and will not be manipulated by any government. And fourth, we will be transparent and we will give access to third-party independent monitors that remain accountable for our commitments. Chew faced hours of questioning from lawmakers.
Starting point is 00:01:40 The central question was, can TikTok guarantee that Americans' data won't be handed over to the Chinese government? The platform's CEO says there are plans to create a firewall to protect American data from the CCP. Republican Representative Kathy McMorris-Rodgers of Washington State asked the CEO if the platform would, for example, remove content that promoted an act of aggression from China against Taiwan, per Reuters. business. Take a listen. We do not promote or remove content at the request of the Chinese government. The question is, we do not. We do not promote or remove content at the request of Taiwan. We do not promote or remove content at the request of the Chinese government. The question is, are you 100% certain that they cannot use your company to promote such messages? It is our commitment to this committee and all our users that we will keep this free from
Starting point is 00:02:40 any manipulation by any government. If you can't say 100% certain, I take that as a no. While lawmakers grilled Chu, a rally was held outside the Capitol at the same time, calling for TikTok to be banned in America. Libs of TikTok founder Hireachik spoke at the rally and said TikTok is a threat to young people in America. TikTok is designed to attract our impressionable youth, and groomers and predators know this and are using it to their advantage.
Starting point is 00:03:10 For more on the hearing today and the band TikTok rally, visit the Daily Signal website. Former President Donald Trump created a false expectation that he would be arrested on Tuesday. That's according to Manhattan District Attorney who was heading the investigation into Trump. As you all remember, Trump claimed on social media that he would be arrested Tuesday, but still no arrest has taken place. District Attorney Alvin Bragg addressed Trump's arrest claims for the first time earlier today. Bragg wrote in a letter to Congress that he could not reveal any details related to the investigation against Trump. The investigation centers on supposed hush money payments to Porn Star Stormy Daniels over an alleged affair she had with Trump. Bragg says that his office will publicly state the conclusion of our investigation, whether we conduct our work without bringing charges,
Starting point is 00:04:07 or move forward with an indictment. But Bragg did not provide a timeline as to when the investigation may conclude. In response to Bragg's letter, the House Judiciary GOP tweeted, Alvin Bragg should focus on prosecuting actual criminals in New York City rather than harassing a political opponent in another state. Make Manhattan safe again. Bragg is what legal experts at the Heritage Foundation have termed a rogue prosecutor for choosing to not prosecute certain crimes in the name of equity and social justice.
Starting point is 00:04:41 Kentucky Senator Rand Paul joined the Hill Rising earlier today and said he remains concerned over the safety of the COVID-19 vaccine. I frankly wouldn't vaccinate my children for COVID because I think the risks of the vaccine are greater than the risk of the disease. The risk of the disease are almost non-existent. Paul and others have raised concerns over the vaccine causing myocarditis. which is inflammation of the heart. According to the American Heart Association,
Starting point is 00:05:10 one in about every 15,000 men in their mid to late teens who receive the vaccine contract myocarditis. Paul's comments follow a congressional hearing on Wednesday, during which Paul said Moderna CEO Stefan Bonssel was lying to the American people over the risks myocarditis posed to young men. But Bancel claims that the risk of myocardin, carditis is lower from the vaccine than it is from actually having COVID-19.
Starting point is 00:05:41 Paul then challenged the number of COVID vaccine shots, saying, if you want to give them a vaccine and they've already had COVID, why not one instead of three? I think it really is malpractice. And for our final piece of top news today, we are joined by Daily Signal intern, Elizabeth Troutman. Elizabeth, there is some controversial news over school choice, a school choice bill in Texas right now. What's happening? A new Texas bill would give $8,000 to each student in an education savings account to use at the private public or online school of their choosing. Daily Signal reporter Tony Kennett writes, The Education Savings Account Program would be open to any student enrolled in a Texas public school,
Starting point is 00:06:23 entering pre-K or attending a public school for most of the year. The bill created a stir in the Texas Capitol. on Wednesday, with supporters and critics filling the room. Republican State Senator Brandon Creighton introduced the legislation, which would also prohibit the Board of Education from promoting sexual orientation or gender identity lessons in schools. Families would be required to use the funds on Texas-approved and accredited resources and programs. Creighton said his bill would place parents, not government, squarely in the center of the decisions for their children.
Starting point is 00:06:56 Parents should be able to use tax funds for their child's education, as they see fit, according to the state senator. Texas public schools currently spend around $9,600 per student a year. If the bill passes the education committee, it will move to the Senate floor for a vote.
