Starting point is 00:00:01 I'm Virginia Allen. And I'm Jillian Richards. And this is the Daily Signals top news for Wednesday, October 12th. Here are today's top headlines. Border Patrol agents did not whip Haitian migrants in September of last year. And Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas knew this, despite peddling a false narrative. That's according to newly uncovered emails. The Heritage Foundation's Oversight Project obtained the email through a Freedom of Information Act
Starting point is 00:00:42 requested between Majorcas and Marcia Espinoza, an assistant secretary of public affairs for DHS. Espinosa wrote this to Myorkas. The photos caused outrage because from certain angles, it appears to show Border Patrol whipping migrants, but photographer Paul Ratchie said he and his colleagues never saw agents whipping anyone. Fox News reported on the email earlier today and pointed out that despite knowing this information, Majorcas went on to discuss the photos at a White House press briefing just hours later. At the press briefing that day, Majorcas said, our nation saw horrifying images that did not reflect who we are. We know that those images painfully conjure up the
Starting point is 00:01:32 worst elements of our nation's ongoing battle against systemic racism. Congressional Republicans, including Texas representatives, Chip Roy, and Michael Cloud, are calling to impeach Majorcas in light of the email. I laid out the case for impeachment last spring, and this last revelation demonstrates a total disregard for his duty and those he is entrusted to lead, Roy told the Daily Signal. The Labor Department reported some unfortunate news about U.S. producer price inflation today. The Associated Press reports that wholesale prices increased 0.4% from August to September, despite declining in the previous two months.
Starting point is 00:02:18 They also increased 8.5% since September 2021. E.J. Antony, an economic research fellow here at the Heritage Foundation, told us, not only is inflation still near a 40-year high, it is accelerating. As these higher prices continue trickling down to consumers, we will continue to see American families squeezed everywhere they go, from the grocery store to the hardware store. The average worker has lost the equivalent of $3,000 in income from inflation under Biden. The Consumer Price Index will be released tomorrow, and we'll be sure to update you in tomorrow's episode with that number. During an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper last night, President Biden downplayed the risk of a recession. The president said, I don't think there will be a recession. If it is, it will be a very slight recession. President Biden spoke out against Saudi Arabia and vowed consequences against the nation after OPEC plus announced it would cut oil production by two million barrels a day.
Starting point is 00:03:26 During the same interview with CNN's Jake Tapper, Biden discussed. America's relationship with Saudi Arabia. Let's take a listen to his answer, per the hill. Do you think it's time for the U.S. to rethink its relationship with Saudi Arabia? Yes, and by the way, let's get straight where I went. I didn't go to one about oil. I went about making sure that we made sure that we weren't going to walk away from the Middle East. We should, and I am in the process when the House and Senate gets back,
Starting point is 00:03:56 there's going to have to, there's going to be some consequences for what they've done with Russia. What kind of consequences? Menendez says suspend all arms sales. Is that something you'd consider? I'm not going to get into what I'd consider and what I'm having mine, but there will be, there will be consequences. Democrat representatives, Richard Blumenthal and Rokana introduced legislation today to immediately freeze all arms sales to Saudi Arabia amid outrage over the decision by OPEC Plus, to slash its oil output, Politico reported. Earlier this week, Democrat Senator Bob Menendez called for a stop to any cooperation between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia. Menendez said, the United States must immediately freeze all aspects of our cooperation
Starting point is 00:04:42 with Saudi Arabia, including any arms sales and security cooperation beyond what is absolutely necessary to defend U.S. personnel and interests per Fox News. In that same interview with CNN, Jake Tapper asked Biden about potential criminal charges against his son, Hunter, over gun-related charges and tax crimes. Let's take a listen to that exchange, per CNN. Our reporting, CNN's reporting, and the Washington Post reporting suggests that prosecutors think they could, they have enough to charge your son, Hunter, for tax crimes and a false statement about a gun purchase. personally and politically, how do you react to that? Well, first of all, I'm proud of my son. This is a kid who got, not a kid, he's a grown man.
Starting point is 00:05:31 He got hooked on, like many families have had happened, hooked on drugs. He's overcome that. He's established a new life. He is, I'm confident that he is, what he says and does are consistent with what happens. The Washington Post reported last week that federal agents believe they have enough evidence to charge the president's son with tax crimes and a false statement related to a gun purchase. The Associated Press reported today that ACT College Admission Test scores are the lowest they've been in over 30 years.
Starting point is 00:06:09 Data from acet.org reveals that the average composite score for 2022 graduates is 19.8 out of 30 years. which is down from 20.3 per graduates last year. Moreover, the same data shows that 32% of the 2022 graduates who took the ACT met at least three out of four ACT college readiness benchmarks, which includes English, math, reading, and science, whereas 42% of students met none, and only 22% met all of them. Janet Godwin is the ACT CEO. She commented on the news saying, The magnitude of the decline this year is particularly alarming,
Starting point is 00:06:55 as we see rapidly growing numbers of seniors leaving high school without meeting the college readiness benchmark in any of the subjects we measure. And that'll do it for today's episode. Thanks so much for listening to this edition of the Daily Signal's top news.
