Starting point is 00:00:30 I'm Virginia Allen. I'm Samantha O'Sheris. And this is the DailySignal top news for Tuesday, January 24th. Here are today's headlines. President Joe Biden is re-upping his calls for a ban on assault weapons following two mass shootings in California. In a statement this morning, Biden said yesterday, Senator Feinstein, along with Senators Murphy, Blumenthal, and others introduced a federal assault weapons ban and legislation. that would raise the minimum purchase age for assault weapons to 21. Even as we await further details on these shootings, we know the scourge of gun violence across America requires stronger action. The president added that I once again urge both chambers of Congress to act quickly and deliver this assault weapons ban to my desk and take action to keep American communities,
Starting point is 00:01:35 schools, workplaces, and homes safe. Amy Swearer is a legal fellow. the Heritage Foundation, and she responded to the president's remarks saying, California already has the strictest gun laws in the nation and implements everything on the gun control activist wish list. It bans so-called assault weapons, which are functionally identical to their non-assault weapon counterparts. Swearer added, it prohibits most adults under the age of 21 from exercising their constitutional right to keep and bear arms. And yet, despite those laws, 18 innocent people are still dead. Nothing can be more unsurious than calling for the federal government to impose on everyone
Starting point is 00:02:23 the same laws that failed to save a single life in back-to-back mass shootings in California, all in the name of the victims, whom those laws did not protect in the first place. 11 people were killed in the Monterey Park shooting, and seven people were killed near Half Moon Bay. Another batch of classified documents have been found, but they don't belong to President Biden or former President Donald Trump. Former Vice President Mike Pence revealed to Congress today that he found some classified documents in his home back in Indiana on January 16th. Fox News reports that the FBI collected the documents on January 19th just a day after the former vice president's team notified the National Archives. Pence was in Washington, D.C. at the time. Republican Representative James Comer chairs the House Oversight Committee, and he told Fox News that former Vice President Mike Pence reached out today about classified documents found out his home in Indiana.
Starting point is 00:03:29 He has agreed to fully cooperate with congressional oversight and any questions we have about the matter. Former Vice President Pence's transparency stands in stark contrast to Biden White House staff who continue to withhold information from Congress and the American people. Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz commemorated National School Choice Week by filing two bills to advance school choice choice. Cruz's staff told the Daily Signal that one of the bills would be the most significant educational reform since the GI Bill. Cruz told the Daily Signal today that we need to provide students with a variety of educational options to fit their needs. I have often said that school choice is the civil rights issue of the 21st century, and I believe no differently today than I did when I began serving in the Senate a decade ago. Two bills are called the Student Empowerment Act and the Education Freedom Scholarship and Opportunity Act.
Starting point is 00:04:35 Both bills were filed today on Tuesday. The Student Empowerment Act builds on Cruz's Student Opportunity Amendment, an edited version of which passed as part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. That amendment enabled families to spend up to $10,000 from 529 tax advance savings plans for various non-public K-12 education expenses. Since 2017, 529 plans have grown from 13.3 million to more than 15.9 million in 2022. That's according to the National Association of State Treasurers. The Chinese-owned app TikTok is back in hot water today. Senator Josh Hawley is introducing legislation to ban the app nationwide. In a tweet earlier today, Holly said, TikTok is China's backdoor.
Starting point is 00:05:28 into Americans' lives. It threatens our children's privacy as well as their mental health. Last month, Congress banned it on all government devices. Now I will introduce legislation to ban it nationwide. States throughout the country have moved to ban TikTok on some or all government-issued devices. So far, 30 states have banned the app in some capacity, including Florida, South Dakota, Maine, Louisiana, and Alabama. Today, the Justice Department, along with eight states, sued the tech giant Google. The lawsuit alleges that the company is monopolizing the online advertising market. The eight states include Virginia, California, New Jersey, New York, Colorado, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Tennessee.
Starting point is 00:06:16 The Justice Department said in the lawsuit that competition in the ad tech space is broken for reasons that were neither accidental nor inevitable, and that one industry behemoth, Google, has corrupted legitimate competition in the ad tech industry by engaging in a systemic campaign to seize control of the wide swath of high-tech tools used by publishers, advertisers, and brokers to facilitate digital advertising. In a statement to ABC, Google said, today's lawsuit from the DOJ attempts to pick winners and losers in the highly competitive advertising technology sector. It largely duplicates an unfounded lawsuit by the Texas Attorney General, much of which was recently dismissed by a federal court. The statement continued, DOJ is doubling down on a flawed argument that would slow innovation, raise advertising fees,
Starting point is 00:07:15 and make it harder for thousands of small businesses and publishers to grow. And that'll do it for today's episode.
