Starting point is 00:00:01 I'm Virginia Allen. And I'm Jillian Richards. And this is the Daily Signal Top News for Thursday, November 17th. Here are today's headlines. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has led the House Democratic Conference for almost two decades. Today, she announced she is stepping down from the role. Speaking to her colleagues on the House floor, Pelosi said she will not seek re-election to the Democratic leadership per Benny Johnson. And with great confidence in our call. I will not seek re-election to Democratic leadership in the next Congress. For may the hours come for a new generation to lead the Democratic caucus that I so deeply respect. And I'm grateful that so many are ready and willing to shoulder this awesome responsibility. Following Pelosi's announcement, President Biden said in a statement that we owe Pelosi a deep debt of gratitude for her service, her patriotism, and above all,
Starting point is 00:01:12 her absolute dignity. Pelosi has not said who she will support to take her leadership position, but a member of New York appears to be the likely candidate. New York Democrat representative Hakim Jeffries is chair of the House Democratic Caucus and a member of the Congressional Black Caucus. CNN reports he has been seen as a favorite to take on the role of leader of the Democratic Caucus. Now that the Republicans have control of the House, they plan to investigate President Biden's involvement in his son Hunter's business dealings. Republican representatives James Comer of Kentucky and Jim Jordan of Ohio held a press conference today, in which they said Biden oversaw Hunter's business dealings and had knowledge of illegal activity. Here's what Comer had to say about the
Starting point is 00:02:00 investigation per Fox News. The investigation reveals a family that engaged with some of America's most powerful adversaries, planning to sell one of the largest sources of cobalt for electric vehicles in the world to the Chinese, for example. The Biden's flourished and became millionaires by simply offering access to the family. Among the dozens of shell companies the Biden set up, there were millions of dollars of wire transfers, flights on Air Force 2
Starting point is 00:02:27 to conduct personal business, and meetings with heads of state all while Joe Biden was aware of what was happening. All the while, he turned a blind eye. The questions Comer said he and his Republican colleagues are asking are, Was Joe Biden directly involved with Hunter Biden's business deals, and is he compromised? That's our investigation.
Starting point is 00:02:48 The Daily Signals Samantha Asharis reports that Hunter Biden and his brother James Biden are under scrutiny for possible crimes, including conspiracy or defrauding the United States, wire fraud, violations of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, tax evasion, and money laundering. The investigation will formally begin in January when Republican, officially take control of the House. Hispanic voters believe the U.S. government should do more to enforce immigration laws according to new polling data. An exit poll conducted by Rasmussen reports and numbers USA shows that 57% of U.S. Hispanics
Starting point is 00:03:28 who voted in the 2020 midterm elections believe the government is not doing enough to reduce illegal border crossings and visitor overstays. When it comes to Democrat Hispanic voters specifically, 49 out of every 100 surveyed say the government is doing too little to crack down on illegal immigration. Over 500 Hispanic voters participated in the poll. The survey also asked voters to share their level of approval or disapproval of President Biden. While 47% of Hispanic voters say they approve or somewhat approve of President Biden, 51% said they either strongly disapproval. or somewhat disapprove of the president. While Republicans gain more support from Hispanics in this election than previous elections,
Starting point is 00:04:15 the Burkings Institute reports that 64% of Latinos reported that they voted for a Democrat House candidate compared to 33% who reported that they voted for a Republican candidate. San Francisco is launching a pilot program to provide a guaranteed income to the city's transgender community. The pilot will provide 55 low-income transgender San Francisco residents with $1,200 a month for as long as 18 months. San Francisco Mayor London Breed said, We know that our trans communities experience much higher rates of poverty and discrimination, so this program will target support to lift individuals in this community up. We will keep building on the programs like this to provide those in the greatest need
Starting point is 00:05:02 with the financial resources and services to help them thrive. The city has allocated $2 million for the program to be used over a two-year period. The Philadelphia District Attorney has been impeached. The Pennsylvania Republican-controlled House impeached District Attorney Larry Krasner on Wednesday. They said Krasner's policies led to a spike in Philadelphia's violent crime. The Pennsylvania House Majority Leader Kerry Benninghoff said that under-Crow, Krasner, there have been nearly 1,000 homicides in Philadelphia in the last 22 months and over 1,000 carjackings since the beginning of the year. The Pennsylvania House voted 107 to 85 to impeach Krasner.
Starting point is 00:05:47 Now the vote goes to the Pennsylvania Senate. A two-thirds majority is needed to convict Krasner, and it's unclear whether or not critics of the district attorney have the backing in the Senate to remove him. Krasner said in a statement to the Washington Post that the Pennsylvania House impeached him without presenting a single shred of evidence connecting our policies to any uptick in crime. Krasner is known for taking a more lenient approach to prosecuting crimes, such as shorter prison sentences. We will keep you all posted as this story continues to unfold.
