I'm Samantha Chiris. I'm Virginia Allen. And this is the Daily Signal Top News for Tuesday, December 13th. Here are today's headlines.
The Consumer Price Index, a key inflation measure, increased 0.1% in November, up 7.1% from November 2021, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday.
The figure marks a slowdown in rampant inflation, but not a reversal of the trend that has caused prices for everyday goods like food and gas.
to ratchet up in recent months. E.J. Antony, a research fellow here at the Heritage Foundation,
said earlier today, although a slowdown in inflation is certainly welcome, it's not a sign of
things to come. The latest data illustrate why families cannot afford to live in Biden's America.
Under Biden, prices have risen so much faster than wages that the average family has lost
$5,800 in real annual income. That loss is thanks to the hidden tax.
of inflation caused by the Biden administration and congressional Democrats policies.
President Biden commented on the inflation report in remarks at the White House this morning,
saying, this morning we received some welcome news, in my view, and I think the view of most
economists on the economic front, news that provides a reason for some optimism for the holiday
season, and I would argue for the year ahead. And we learned last month's inflation rate came down,
down more than experts expected.
President Biden officially signed the Respect for Marriage Act into law today.
The House of Representatives gave final approval of the Respect for Marriage Act last Thursday.
The bill passed 258 to 169.
Our colleague Jillian Richards and Tyler O'Neill have previously reported on this act.
Every single Democrat voted for the legislation, as did 39 Republicans.
Most Republicans, 169,
voted against the measure while one voted present and four didn't vote at all.
The bill is said to codify the Supreme Court's 2015 ruling in a Bergerfeld v. Hodges into law.
A Bergerfeld legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.
Vice President of Domestic Policy here at the Heritage Foundation, Roger Severino,
said in a statement to the Daily Signal that members of Congress who voted for this bill
and claim to support religious liberty are either naive or don't understand the laws they're passing.
Despite polling showing that their constituents oppose this legislation, they refused to adopt Utah Senator Mike Lee's amendment
that would have protected the religious freedom of millions of Americans without taking away a single benefit or legal entitlement for same-sex couples.
The U.S. Department of Energy appears to have parted ways with Sam Brinton, the non-biased,
binary Biden administration nuclear official who is facing charges for allegedly stealing two
pieces of luggage at two separate airports. Our colleague Tyler O'Neill reports. A Department of Energy
spokesperson told the daily signal in an email Monday afternoon, Sam Brinton is no longer a DOE employee.
By law, the Department of Energy cannot comment further on personnel matters. The spokesperson did not
respond to a follow-up email by publication time. The department did not clear
whether Brinton had resigned or been fired. The termination of Brinton's employment has not been
previously reported. Republicans had previously called on Energy Secretary Jennifer Grant Holm to fire
Brinton, citing the grand larceny charges he faces. As an appointed official, Sam Brinton
represents both your department and the United States. Congressman Andrew Clyde of Georgia
and other House Republicans wrote in a letter earlier this month.
It is simply not possible for an individual to represent American values
and simultaneously violate the felony laws of the land, the letter said.
A bipartisan trio of lawmakers introduced legislation aimed at banning TikTok nationwide on Tuesday.
Representative Mike Gallagher, who recently became the chairman of the Select Committee on China for the next Congress,
introduced the legislation with Senator Marco Rubio and Representative Raja Krishnamore,
Gallagher said in a statement earlier today, TikTok is digital fentanyl that's addicting Americans collecting troves of their data and censoring their news.
It's also an increasingly powerful media company that's owned by ByteDance, which ultimately reports the Chinese Communist Party, America's foremost adversary.
Rubio, who is a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, said, this isn't about creative videos.
This is about an app that is collecting data on tens of millions of American children and adults every day.
A TikTok spokesperson told the Daily Signal, it is troubling that rather than encouraging the administration to conclude its national security review of TikTok,
some members of Congress have decided to push for a politically motivated ban that will do nothing to advance the national security of the United States.
A major breakthrough in the science world was announced earlier today.
The Associated Press reports that scientists have for the first time produced more energy in a fusion reaction than was used to ignite it.
The Energy Department said that the researchers who achieved this breakthrough were from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.
Energy Secretary Jennifer Grant Holm commented on what she labeled as a milestone, saying ignition.
allows us to replicate for the first time certain conditions that are found only in the stars
and the sun. This milestone moves us one significant step closer to the possibility of zero-carbon
abundant fusion energy powering our society. And that'll do it for today's episode. Thank you for
