Starting point is 00:00:01 I'm Jillian Richards. I'm John Pop. And this is the Daily Signal Top News for Monday, November 14th. Here are today's headlines. Conservative leaders are calling on Republicans in the 118th Congress to delay electing leaders for the House and Senate. Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts, former Republican Senator Jim DeMint, and Conservative Action Project Chairman Kenneth Blackwell, were among those to sign the Monday letter, reports my colleague Mary Margaret Ollahan.
Starting point is 00:00:42 The letter states, the Republican Party needs leaders who will confidently and skillfully present a persuasive, coherent vision of who we are, what we stand for, and what we will do. Many current elections are still undecided. There should be no rushed leadership elections. The writers urge both houses of Congress to postpone formal leadership elections until after the December 6th runoff in Georgia, and all election results are fully decided. The House Republican leadership elections are currently scheduled to be held tomorrow. Republican Herschel Walker is facing Democrat Senator Raphael Warnock in Georgia's runoff elections for U.S. Senate on December 6th.
Starting point is 00:01:24 President Joe Biden held a three-hour-long discussion with People's Republic of China President Xi Jinping today. They met at a G20 summit in Indonesia, which was reportedly the first time they have met in person since Biden took office. Listen to Biden's remarks as well as Xi's through a translator per CNN. As the leaders of our two nations, we share responsibility in my view to show that China and the United States can manage our differences, prevent competition from becoming anything near conflict, and to find ways to work together on urgent global issues that require our mutual cooperation. In this time and age, great changes are unfolding in ways like never before. Humanity are confronted with unprecedented challenges. The world has come to a crossroads.
Starting point is 00:02:22 Where to go from here, this is a question that is not only on our mind, but also on the mind of all countries. The world expects that China and the United States will properly handle the relationship. And for our meeting, it has attracted the world's attention. Former Vice President Mike Pence said the former President Donald Trump's rhetoric leading to the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol was reckless. Pence shared these remarks in a Sunday interview with ABC World News Tonight's anchor David Muir. Pence told ABC he was angered by a tweet Trump had written after Joe Biden's inauguration. After Trump failed to dissuade Pence from certifying Biden's victory in the 2020 presidential elections,
Starting point is 00:03:14 Trump wrote on Twitter that Pence didn't have the courage to do what he should have done. Here's what Pence had to say to ABC. Members were barricaded inside the House chamber. And in the middle of it all, you can see that the president has tweeted. 2.24 p.m., the president tweets, Mike Pence, didn't have the courage. to do what should have been done. It angered me. But I turned to my daughter who was standing nearby.
Starting point is 00:03:58 And I said, it doesn't take courage to break the law. It takes courage to uphold the law. I mean, the President's words were reckless. It was clear he decided to be part of the problem. Authorities say the suspect who allegedly opened fire on a bus of University of Virginia students last night has been taken into custody. The suspect, Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., alleged
Starting point is 00:04:23 allegedly killed three of the university's football players and injured two others. UVA President Jim Ryan shared remarks this morning per Fox News 5 DC. So in terms of what we know, as I mentioned in an email we sent out early this morning. Last night at approximately 10.30 p.m., university police responded to a call of shots fired in the Colbreath parking garage area. The suspected shooter is UVA student Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. Upon arrival at the scene, University police encountered several victims of gunshot wounds. The shootings occurred on a bus full of students returning from a field trip. Three of the victims did not survive.
Starting point is 00:05:07 They were Devin Chandler, a second year from Virginia Beach, Virginia, LaVelle Davis, a third-year student from Ridgeville, South Carolina, and Deshawn Perry, a fourth-year student from Miami, Florida. All three were members of the football team. Two other students were wounded and are being treated for injuries at the UVA medical center. One is in good condition, one is in critical condition. In order to protect their privacy, we are not releasing their names at this moment. The University's police chief was informed during a press conference later that the suspect has been taken into custody.
