I'm Gillian Richards. I'm Samantha Escheris. And this is the Daily Signal Top News for Friday, December 16th. Here are today's headlines. Russian officials fired dozens of missiles into Ukraine today. The Associated Press reports that this was one of the biggest attacks on Ukraine's capital since the start of the Russian invasion. Ukrainian officials said the missiles hit at least four cities, triggering widespread power outages. Ukraine's armed forces reportedly intercepted 60 of the 76 missiles launched from Russia. The attack comes after the U.S. agreed to send a battery of Patriot missiles to Ukraine. Last night, the Senate passed a one-week government funding patch to avert a government shutdown. Matt Dickerson, the director of the Center for the Federal Budget at the Heritage Foundation, is joining us to discuss.

Matt, thanks for coming on. Thanks for having me. Of course. Now, let's just dive right in. What's the latest on this omnibus spending package? So they did pass a one leak continuing resolution, which gives Congress one more week to pass and negotiate and finalize this massive spending bill that's going to fund the government for all of next year. And this is going to be loaded up with all sorts of big spending liberal priorities right before Nancy Pelosi leaves office because she just got voted out in November. Yeah, and do you know what's included? Like, do we have any idea what's actually included in the bill? Well, they're not going to release it until the very last minute and then they're going to try to jam it through.

But we know because Pelosi's got the pin, she's the one writing the bill, they're going to fund all of their priorities. They're going to continue spending and spending hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayers' money on abortion providers like Planned Parenthood. And these are things that conservatives just should not accept and go along with. Yeah, and just along those lines of, you know, this one-week extension, I do think it's likely to pass next week. Next Friday, I believe it has to pass by. Yeah, and so the indications seem to be that there's going to be enough Senate Republicans that are going to go along with it. But I think we have more time to allow the American people to understand what's going on. This is totally an unprecedented situation.

Never before in the history of our country has a majority in the House been voted out. and then they passed a lame duck omnibus massive spending bill. And so I think when the American people realize that they're going to spend close to $2 trillion next week, that's going to have a big effect on people's pocketbooks. It's going to push up inflationary pressures. And so I think they shouldn't do that. Yeah, that is certainly a lot of money. Fox News host Tucker Carlson said yesterday that the CIA was involved in the assassination of former President John F. Kennedy. The National Archives released thousands of documents relating to Kennedy's assassination yesterday afternoon.

Carlson suggested the CIA has concealed these documents for the past 60 years to protect itself. Check out what Carlson had to say on Fox News last night. We spoke to someone who had access to these still hidden CIA documents, a person was deeply familiar with what they contained. We asked this person directly, did the CIA have a hand in the murder of John F. Kennedy, an American president? And here's the reply we received verbatim. Quote, the answer is yes. I believe they were involved. It's a whole different country from what we thought it was. It's all fake. It's hard to imagine a more jarring response than that.

Again, this is not a, quote, conspiracy theorist that we spoke to, not even close. This is someone with direct knowledge of the information that once again is being withheld from the American public. And the answer we received was unequivocal. Yes, the CIA was involved in the assassination of the president. Per the daily caller, two Republican senators wrote a letter calling out the Department of Homeland Security for redacting information on its now-defunct. Disinformation Governance Board. Senators Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Josh Hawley of Missouri wrote yesterday that the department didn't address the questions from a previous information request

they sent in June. The senators said the Department of Homeland Security offered two documents which were already in the public domain. The department provided other material, but half of it was mostly or entirely redacted. Grassley and Holly wrote yesterday that it appears that many of the redactions are up to pre-decisional and deliberative process material. They reminded the Secretary of Homeland Security that oversight letters to the executive branch are signed in our capacity as sitting members of Congress, a separate and co-equal branch of government. The senator said they were renewing their written informal information requests, including unredacted versions of the documents previously received.

My colleague Tyler O'Neill reports that South Dakota Governor, Christine Nome, a Republican, asked her state's health department to terminate a contract with a transgender activist group. The Daily Signal drew Noam's attention to the group called the Transformation Project, which is planning to host a gender identity summit next month. Noam's spokesperson said today that the governor immediately terminated a contract with the Transformation Project. The contract was reportedly signed without Noam's prior knowledge or approval.
