Starting point is 00:00:01 I'm Samantha Escheris. I'm Virginia Allen. And this is the Daily Signal, top news for Thursday, October 13th. Here are today's headlines. The Consumer Price Index rose 0.4% in September, showing that inflation remained at a near four-decade high of 8.2%. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported earlier today. President Biden said in a statement, today's report shows some progress in the fight against higher prices, even as we have more work to do. do. Inflation over the last three months has averaged 2% at an annualized rate. E.J. Antony, a research fellow for regional economics in the Center for Data Analysis here at the Heritage Foundation, told the Daily Signal that the latest data from the Department of Labor shows inflation is not only crushing American families, but getting worse. Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, hit a new 40-year high. Antony also explained that while the September report,
Starting point is 00:01:12 did not mark the highest annual consumer price index increase under the Biden administration. It did register the highest core consumer price index increase. The producer price index rose 0.4% in September and a total of 8.5% since last year, the Labor Department reported Wednesday. Nicholas Cruz is the school shooter who killed 17 people at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018. On Thursday, he was sentenced to life in prison. Cruz pleaded guilty to the shooting last year, but was spared the death penalty after seven hours of jury deliberations that lasted more than two days. Manuel Oliver's son, Joaquin, was killed in the shooting.
Starting point is 00:01:58 In response to the ruling, the father tweeted, mass murderers, you get to live your natural life. You get your three hot meals a day. You get to shower every day. get medical attention, hey, even a hobby or a new education. What a great message is this sending. According to ABC, Manuel's wife told reporters, it should have been clear as day. If not now the death penalty, then when? Gun control advocate David Hogg attended Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School at the time of the shooting. He shared his thoughts about the verdict on Twitter writing, stop using the shooter's name or showing his photo.
Starting point is 00:02:38 Stop giving him notoriety, focus on the victims, and supporting their families. The January 6th panel is set to vote to subpoena former president Donald Trump today during the 9th public hearing on the Capitol Riot. NBC News reported that the move has been under review for a while and that the committee has issued over 100 subpoena requests so far in addition to conducting upward of 1,000 interviews and depositions. Outspoken critic of the former president and outgoing Congresswoman Liz Cheney said Thursday that the vast weight of evidence presented so far has shown us that the central cause of January 6th
Starting point is 00:03:16 was one man, Donald Trump, who many others followed. None of this would have happened without him. Trump has not cooperated with a panel thus far and is not expected to, Fox News reported. The Supreme Court also struck down the former president's request for a special master to review classified papers that were seized at his Mar-a-Lago home in August, NBC reported.
