Starting point is 00:00:01 I'm Samantha Chiris. I'm Virginia Allen. And this is the Daily Signal top news for Tuesday, February 7th. Here are today's headlines. Tonight is President Biden's second State of the Union address, and there will be many special guests in the audience. Terry Nichols' parents will be in attendance. Nichols died last month in a police-involved incident,
Starting point is 00:00:34 which has sparked calls for police reform. First lady, Jill Biden, invited Bono, who has been an active. in fighting HIV AIDS and global poverty, the Hill reports. Paul Pelosi will also be in the first lady's box during tonight's speech. Republican Representative Elise Stefaniq invited Montgomery County Sheriff Jeffrey T. Smith of Fort Plain, New York, and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy invited former NBA player and human rights activist, Annes Freedom.
Starting point is 00:01:05 In a statement, Stefaniq said, Sheriff Smith and countless other members of law enforcement are on the front lines every day, protecting our communities and fighting against the crises caused by Joe Biden's failed policies. The American people deserve a government with the same dedication to public safety, and House Republicans are leading the charge to hold the Biden administration accountable for its crises and deliver on our commitment to create a nation that is safe. Retired Illinois Air Force Colonel Mark A. Hurley will also be in attendance. He left the military due to Biden.
Starting point is 00:01:40 Biden's mandate for the COVID-19 vaccine. He was invited by Illinois Republican Representative Mary Miller, who is not attending the speech tonight. Catholic pro-life activist and former Biden Department of Justice Target, Mark Halk, will also attend the State of the Union as Pennsylvania Republican Representative Scott Perry's guest, Halk shared with the Daily Signal on Monday. Perry told the Daily Signal on Tuesday Mark Halk and his family are innocent victims of the radical left's reprehensible abuse of power, which systematically seeks to destroy the lives of
Starting point is 00:02:13 hardworking Americans whose only crimes are using their God-given constitutional rights to protect their families, faith, and way of life. The DOJ had charged Howk with two counts of violating the freedom of access to clinic entrances, Face Act, when outside a Pennsylvania abortion clinic, Halk allegedly pushed a pro-abortion activist who was allegedly antagonizing his son. Last week, a jury found Mark Halk not guilty of federal charges brought against him by President Joe Biden's Department of Justice. We will include a link to a list with more guests in the show notes. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy says the greatest threat to our future is our national debt. He delivered this warning during a speech on Monday night, just one day before Biden's State of the Union.
Starting point is 00:03:02 Union address. McCarthy told Americans during his speech, our national debt is high, too high, and the problem is getting worse, not better. America reached its debt ceiling of 31.4 trillion in January. The Treasury Department has warned that lawmakers have until early June to raise the debt ceiling, or America will risk defaulting on its debt. Let's take a listen to some of McCarthy's speech via his Twitter. Mr. President, it's time to get to work. Surely we both agree that the national debt is too high. Surely we both agree that inflation hurts American families. Surely we can trim waste and streamline programs to make them both stronger and more efficient.
Starting point is 00:03:51 So let's do this. As a senator, you voted against raising the debt ceiling, Mr. President. President, to quote your words, your vote in 2004 was a protest of the policies that have brought us to a point and a demand that we change course. We need a different approach. No drawing lines in the sand are saying it's my way or the highway. No policy gimmicks or political games. But most of all, no blank checks for the way.
Starting point is 00:04:29 for runaway spending. Just sensible, responsible solutions to our growing national debt. While McCarthy told Biden, there should be no blank check for runaway spending, he told Americans he has a three-part plan to move the ball forward regarding debates over the debt ceiling. McCarthy said his plan includes
Starting point is 00:04:50 continuing to sit down and negotiate a commitment to finding common ground on a responsible debt limit increase and he added that we must move forward to balance the budget and insist on genuine accountability for every dollar we spend. Twitter temporarily suspended the account of Republican Senator Steve Danes. Danes, who is from Montana and chairs the Senate Republicans campaign arm, was suspended for reportedly violating Twitter's media policy. The Hill reports that Danes' Twitter account didn't show both his background and personal. profile photos as of Tuesday morning.
Starting point is 00:05:30 In a statement, Dane said, I am grateful Elon Musk reached out to me to resolve this issue and am glad that he recognizes that free speech is a bedrock of our country and acted quickly to reinstate my Twitter account after being made aware of its suspension. The initial ban over the profile photo of my wife and me after a successful Montana Antelope hunt was disappointing, given the fact that it is no different than photos Montanans share on social media every day. And finally, trans lives matter protesters were at the Oklahoma State Capitol yesterday.
Starting point is 00:06:05 According to videos posted on Twitter, protesters were chanting trans lives matter, and this is our house. The protest happened during Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stintz State of the state address, during which he urged the state legislatures to pass a law prohibiting gender transition medical treatment for minors. That's according to a report from Fox News. Stitt said on the House floor, minors can't vote, can't purchase alcohol, can't purchase cigarettes. We shouldn't allow a minor to get a permanent gender-altering surgery in Oklahoma. Stint went on to say, that's why I am calling on the legislature to send me a bill that bans all gender transition surgeries and hormone therapies on minors in the state. As governor, I will never shy away from calling out right from wrong.
Starting point is 00:06:54 I will not be intimidated by partisan interest groups or make decisions. decisions based on groupthink. And that I'll do it for today's episode.
