I'm Samantha Sherris. I'm Virginia Allen. And this is the Daily Signal Top News for Wednesday, June 14th.
Here are today's headlines. Former President Donald Trump has been indicted once again.
Trump appeared in a Miami courthouse on Tuesday, where he pled not guilty. Last week, special counsel, Jack Smith, made public a 37-count indictment against the former president.
31 counts alleging willful retention of national defense.
information in violation of the espionage act, one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice,
one count of withholding a document or record, one count of corruptly concealing a document,
one count of concealing a document in a federal investigation, one count of a scheme to
conceal, and one count of false statements and representations.
Trump's aide Walteen Walt Nata is named in five counts in the indictment.
Tuesday evening our colleague Fred Lucas reported that the former president denounced the federal
case against him as the most evil and heinous abuse of power in the history of our country
during a primetime speech from his Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey. He called it a sham
indictment put forward by the Biden administration. Let's take a listen to some of what Trump said on
Tuesday via WPTV News.
This day will go down in infamy and Joe Biden will forever be remembered as not only the
most corrupt president of the history of our country, but perhaps even more importantly,
the president, together with the band of his closest thugs, misfits and Marxists tried to
destroy American democracy.
Trump pointed out that the combined maximum sentence for the charges would be 400 years.
what he called fake and fabricated charges. Trump further argued that the Espionage Act is for spies and
traitors. President Joe Biden is also facing a special counsel investigation led by former U.S.
Attorney Robert Hur for his alleged mishandling of classified information.
Bud Light is no longer the U.S.'s top-selling beer. The Mexican beer, Madelo I Special, took the top spot in May,
replacing Bud Light.
And keep in mind that Bud Light has held that number one spot for over two decades.
Modelo Especial had 8.4% of the U.S. beer sales last month,
while Bud Light had 7.3%, according to the consumer firm, Bump Williams.
The firm told CNN that Mandelo Especial appears to be increasing its sales growth each week
as we get deeper into summer.
As you all will recall, Bud Light has come under intense scrutiny and backlash after it teamed up with transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney for an ad campaign during March Madness.
Former Secretary of State and failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is criticizing Republicans defending Trump over his indictment.
Clinton made the comments during an appearance on the podcast Pod Save America.
Let's take a listen.
Republicans claim that you got on.
You did the same thing and got off Scott Fri.
Why did your friend Jim Comey let you off?
So easy.
That's a really good question.
I can't figure that one out.
You know, I do think it's odd, let's just say,
to the point of being absurd,
how that is their only response.
You know, they refuse to read the indictment,
they refuse to engage with the facts,
there's nothing new about that.
And what they refuse to,
admit is, you know, this is on a track about him, not about anybody else, no matter how
much that they try to confuse people and how much they try to, you know, raise extraneous
issues. And it's going to be fascinating, I guess, in a bizarre and sad way to watch them
spin themselves up. If you watched any of the news programs this weekend, I mean,
their efforts to defend this man are truly
beyond anything that I ever thought possible in our country.
I mean, it is so profoundly disturbing how this could have been the break.
This could have been the opportunity to say, you know,
thank you so much for everything you've done for us.
We really appreciate it, you know.
But this is kind of serious, and so we're not going to, you know,
continue to defend you.
But no, they're all in again.
That's what the psychology.
of this is so hard for me to fully grasp.
During his speech in Bedminster on Tuesday, Trump took aim at Clinton.
Let's take a listen to his comments via CNBC's YouTube.
Most and famously of all, Hillary Clinton set up an illegal private server in her basement.
You never heard this story.
With the deliberate intention of violating public information laws so she could hide her pay-for-play scandals at the Clinton Foundation's
or whatever.
Hillary stored vast quantities of classified and sensitive information
on her illicit server.
Some of it happened to leak.
It leaked into Anthony Wiener's computer.
Remember Anthony Wiener?
Into his computer.
You don't want to be on his computer.
And all of it was illegal because, thankfully,
she was never president.
She didn't have the powers to declassified.
In other news from Capitol Hill, Ohio Republican Senator J.D. Vance has announced a new step to make it harder for judicial nominees to get confirmed.
Vance says he won't allow the nominations to move forward until Attorney General Merrick Garland stops going after his political opponents.
In a video posted to Twitter, Vance said, we have to grind this department to a halt until Merrick Garland promise.
to do his job and stop going after his political opponents.
Vance will be putting holds on nominees to the Justice Department.
If any senator places a hold on a nominee, that means there is not unanimous consent.
And as a result, the nominee will need to be approved in a floor vote, which will likely make for a longer process.
Vance's decision comes the same day. Former President Donald Trump pled
not guilty. Trump was indicted last week on 37 counts. The hillbilly elegy author turned senator
said the Trump indictment is part of a larger pattern. We have Catholic fathers harassed for their
pro-life activism. We of course have violent criminals walking the streets after the 2020 summer of
riots. And if you're letting the violent criminals go free and you're harassing Christian parents
for their political activism, you're not engaged in justice. You're engaged in politics. You're engaged in
Let's be honest about that fact, and let's make this department work a little bit more slowly until Merrick Garland changes course and actually does his job the right way.
We will leave a link in our show notes today for our colleague Elise McHugh's full report on this situation and Vance's actions.
And of course, we'll keep you all posted on this situation as more details evolve.
And for our final story today, Reuters is reporting that the president of Belarus said that his country has started to be.
taking delivery of Russian tactical nuclear weapons.
President Alexander Lukashenko told a Russian state television channel that we have missiles
and bombs that we have received from Russia.
He also said the bombs are three times more powerful than those dropped on Hiroshima and
Nagasaki.
NBC News reported back in March, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia would be sending
tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus and just last week said,
operations required for the weapons, deployments would be finished by July 7th or 8th.
And that's going to do it for today's episode.
