Americans search for answers about Wednesday night's fatal plane crash.
I'm Elizabeth Mitchell.
This is the Daily Signal's Top News in 10 for Thursday, January 30th.
Zero survivors have been reported after an American Airlines passenger jet collided with a U.S. Army helicopter at Washington Reagan National Airport on Wednesday night.
A search and rescue mission was underway all evening.
Here's D.C. Fire Chief John Donnelly at a Thursday press conference.
We are now at a point where we are switching from a rescue operation to a recovery operation.
At this point, we don't believe there are any survivors from this accident.
And we have recovered 27 people from the plane and one from the helicopter.
The district office of the medical examiner has lead on reuniting these bodies and these people with their loved ones.
And we will continue to work to find all the bodies and collect the...
them and reunite them with their loved ones. We should also acknowledge that the Virginia Medical
Examiner and the Army Medical Examiner are involved in this operation and a very important
part of getting people identified. More than 60 people are dead. The plane collided with a U.S.
Army Blackhawk helicopter and crashed into the freezing Potomac River. President Donald Trump
held a press conference on the crash on Thursday at 11 a.m. I speak to you this morning.
an hour of anguish for our nation. Just before 9 p.m. last night, an American Airlines
Regional jet carrying 60 passengers and four crew collided with an Army Black Hawk helicopter,
carrying three military service members over the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., while on
final approach to Reagan National Airport. Both aircraft crashed instantly and were immediately
submerged into the icy waters of the Potomac.
Real tragedy.
This is the first commercial airplane crash since 2009.
Vice President J.D. Vance said this is a call to hire the best people to staff the Federal Aviation Administration.
Something the president said that I think bears reemphasizing, which is that when you don't have the best standards in who you're hiring, it means on the one hand you're not getting the best people in government, but on the other hand, it puts stresses on the people who are already there.
And I think that is a core part of what President Trump is going to bring and has already brought to Washington, D.C., is we want to hire the best people because we want the best people at air traffic control. And we want to make sure we have enough people at air traffic control who are actually competent to do the job. If you go back to just some of the headlines over the past 10 years, you have many hundreds of people suing the government because they would like to be air traffic controllers, but they were turned away because of the color of their skin. That policy ends under Donald Trump's leadership because safety.
is the first priority of our aviation industry.
Thank you, Mr. President.
Tulsi Gabbard faced Senate scrutiny on Thursday
during her confirmation hearing to be Director of National Intelligence.
In her opening statement, she promised to break the cycle of weaponization of the intelligence community.
I'm honored and grateful to President Trump for his trust and confidence
in nominating me to serve our country as the Director of National Intelligence.
At a time when trust in the intelligence community, unfortunately, is at an all-time low.
Chuck Schumer admitted a few years ago, quote, you take on the intelligence community.
They have six ways from Sunday at getting back at you.
She made numerous allegations of corruption.
These include espionage against President Trump, the persecution of Catholics,
and the collection of Americans' Internet records.
Gabbard told the committee that she would work to rebuild trust through transparency and accountability.
She confronted left-wing smears of her qualifications.
Before I close, I want to warn the American people who are watching at home.
You may hear lies and smears in this hearing that will challenge my loyalty to and my love for our country.
Those who oppose my nomination imply that I am loyal to something or someone other than God, my own conscience, and the Constitution of the United States.
Accusing me of being Trump's puppet, Putin's puppet, Assad's puppet, a guru's puppet, Modi's puppet, not recognizing the absurdity of simultaneously
being the puppet of five different puppet masters.
The same tactic was used against President Trump and failed.
The American people elected President Trump with a decisive victory and mandate for change.
The fact is what truly unsettles my political opponents is I refuse to be their puppet.
Cash Patel had his Senate confirmation hearing Thursday to serve as President Donald Trump's FBI director.
Senator Eric Schmidt asked Cash Patel a series of rapid fire questions on how he'd deal with certain situations.
Let's take a listen.
And I know that Senator Tillis has got the game of bingo.
I'd like to play another game.
Would you rather?
Let's have that it, sir.
Would you rather the FBI prosecute and persecute parents who voice legitimate concerns at school board meetings,
or should it investigate domestic terrorists who commit school,
shootings and threaten the lives of American children?
Absolutely. Investigate, prioritize the safety of our children and any actual and real domestic
terrorist as I have prosecuted in my past in the Obama Justice Department.
Would you rather the FBI be weaponized by investigating presidential candidates, political
opponents, spying on, and wiretapping candidates' advisors, or should the FBI get its back,
get back to its core mission, and get politics out of the FBI?
There should be no politics in the FBI and having been a victim of the weaponization of law enforcement against me.
I know what that feels like.
And if I'm confirmed, I will make sure no American feels that sleight of hand ever again.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. faced his second day of questioning from Senators Thursday as he seeks confirmation as Trump's Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Kennedy testified before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions just one day after completing a lengthy hearing before the Senate finance.
Committee. He explained and defended his position on a wide range of health-related issues during
the hearing. Kennedy accused Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont of accepting millions of dollars
from the pharmaceutical industry. So let me ask Mr. Kennedy again, if we want to make America
healthy, will you assure the American people that you will fight to do what every other major
country on earth does guarantee health care to every single American? I'm going to be. I'm going to
make America healthier
than other countries in the world right now.
Will you guarantee do what every
other major country does? That's a simple
question. And by the way,
Bernie,
the problem of corruption
is not just in the federal agency.
It's in Congress too.
Almost all the members of this panel are
accepting, including yourself, are accepting
millions of dollars from the pharmaceutical
industry. Oh no.
No, no, no. No. I thought that that
I ran for president like you.
I got millions and millions of contributions.
They did not come from the executives,
not one nickel of pack money from the pharmaceutical industry.
They came to workers.
In 2020, in 2020, you were the single largest
because I had four contributions from workers all over this country.
Workers, not a nickel from corporate tax.
You were the single largest except.
pharmaceutical dollars.
No, from workers in...
1.5 million.
Yeah, out of
200 million. All right.
But
you have not answered, last question.
You have not answered my question?
How do we make America
healthy if you don't
guarantee health care of all people?
We're literally three minutes over here now.
How long does it keep going?
At some time, you're just battering the witness.
Not battering the witnesses.
Yes, you are.
You're getting upset at him.
You're going at him just like anybody else would.
Those were our headlines. Let's get to our news flashes right after this.
Senate Democrats on the Budget Committee boycotted the meeting to advance the nomination of Russell vote to head the Office of Management and Budget.
Nonetheless, Republicans on the Senate Budget Committee approved votes nomination, paving the way for a full Senate hearing.
Vote served as director of this department in President Donald Trump's first term.
Meadow will pay President Donald Trump $25 million for suspending his Facebook and Facebook.
Instagram accounts in 2021. Trump's lawsuit against META CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, alleged First Amendment
violations. A meta spokesperson said about $22 million of the settlement will fund Trump's presidential
library. On Wednesday, President Trump issued executive orders expanding school choice, prohibiting
DEI and gender ideology instruction in public schools, and preventing anti-Semitism. The school
choice order directs the education department to prioritize school choice programs through its discretionary
grants. Another order prohibits federal funding of K-12 schools that promote critical race theory
or radical gender ideology. Another directs federal agencies to combat anti-Semitism, including
deporting anti-Semitic activists who have violated laws. That's it for today's episode. Thank you so
