Donald Trump spoke publicly last night for the first time since the second attempt on his life.
I'm Elizabeth Mitchell, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Tuesday, September 17th.
Former President Donald Trump said in an ex-base interview on Monday night that God may have allowed him to survive two assassination attempts so he could be president again.
Trump said, there's something going on. I mean, perhaps it's God wanting me to be president to save this country. Nobody knows.
This was Trump's first public event since a gunman attempted to assassinate him as he golfed Sunday at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Trump said Democrats' rhetoric, calling him a threat to democracy, likely contributed to the assassination attempts against him.
That's two in just over two months.
He warned about a Kamala Harris presidency citing her record on the border crisis.
He said Harris replacing Biden as nominee was the first coup of an American president.
He touted his own foreign policy record, saying there would be less conflict abroad if he was president.
He said there wouldn't have been an October 7th attack against Israel had he been president,
and Russia would not have attacked Ukraine.
Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal slammed the Biden-Harris administration for stonewalling
request for information on the two attempted assassinations of Donald Trump.
The Connecticut Democrat accused Biden's Department of Homeland Security of being almost derelict in its duty
by resisting our request for documents, evidence, and information that are necessary to investigate.
A would-be assassin tried to shoot from President Trump as he played golf at his Mar-a-Lago course on Sunday.
Blumenthal said he is angry that DHS has not been more forthcoming with information on the attempts.
Blumenthal said, we may need to require more cooperation from them, and we have the power to do so through the compulsory process.
In other words, the subpoena power.
House Speaker Mike Johnson announced this morning that the House will move forward with a vote on Wednesday on a continuing resolution to fund the federal government beyond the end of the fiscal year on September 30th.
The continuing resolution would fund the government for six months and avert the looming government shutdown.
Johnson has also attached the SAVE Act to the funding mechanism.
The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act attempts to add further measures to prevent illegal immigrants and other non-citizens from voting in federal elections.
Johnson wrote, in a post on X,
Congress has an immediate obligation to do two things,
responsibly fund the federal government
and ensure the security of our elections.
Johnson continued, because we owe this to our constituents,
we will move forward on Wednesday with a vote
on the six-month continuing resolution with the SAVE Act attached.
I urge all of my colleagues to do
with the overwhelming majority of the people of this country
rightfully demand and deserve.
Prevent non-American citizens from voting in American elections.
Johnson previously planned to have the House vote on the six-month continuing resolution and save act last week.
Amid Republican defections that would have resulted in a failed vote, however,
Johnson pulled the bill and dispatched House Majority Whip Tom Emmer to court more Republican support.
Lebanese military group Hezbollah promised to retaliate against Israel,
blaming the Jewish state for a pager explosion that killed at least nine people and injured around 2,800 others.
Many of those wounded included members of Hezbollah and its military units.
Hezbollah released a statement holding Israel fully accountable for the explosion.
The statement said,
The simultaneous explosion of hundreds of pagers across Lebanon represents a physical and symbolic hit on Hezbollah
that was landed, presumably, by Israel.
The Lebanese government called the explosion Criminal Israeli Aggression.
