I'm Virginia Allen, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Tuesday, May 28. Here are today's headlines.
Starting point is 00:00:50 The New York trial of former president Donald Trump is reaching its conclusion. Today, the defense and prosecution made their final arguments. The case goes back to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, charging Trump with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in relation to alleged hush many payments that were made to Porn Star Stormy Daniels. The former president spoke before the trial's proceedings today, per Fox News. Take a listen. Make no mistake about it. I'm here because of Crooked Joe Biden. The worst president in the history of our country is destroying our country. This country is being destroyed rapidly, not slowly, rapidly, of the borders, on energy, on inflation, on everything you can name.
Starting point is 00:01:37 Afghanistan removal, everything about what he's done. He's destroying our. country, and he's also destroying it with weaponization, and this is purely its weaponization. Also, before the closing arguments took place today, actor Robert De Niro showed up outside the courthouse to denounce Trump and his supporters and announce his support for President Joe Biden. He wants to sow total chaos, which he's succeeding in some areas and places to do. Inside the courtroom during closing arguments, Trump's lawyers. said that the prosecution failed to come up with any evidence that Trump committed a crime. Trump's defense attorney Todd Blanche said President Trump is innocent.
Starting point is 00:02:22 He did not commit any crimes, and the district attorney has not met their burden of proof, period. He also pointed to the prosecution's star witness, former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, as an unreliable witness with a history of lying. Blanche said, you can't send someone to prison based on the words of Michael Conch. Cohen. Judge Juan Mershon reprimated Blanche for his remarks, calling his comments both outrageous and highly inappropriate. So why the strong reaction from the judge? Well, jurors are told not to consider punishments when deciding a case. Trump would face up to four years in prison if found guilty of all charges in this case. Israel delivered an official written update of its
Starting point is 00:03:08 terms for a ceasefire in Gaza to the U.S. and a few other mediating countries on Monday. According to a report in Axio citing two confidential sources, the Israeli proposal includes a willingness to be flexible about the number of living hostages that would be released in the first humanitarian stage of a deal. Indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas broke down weeks ago, and Israel has continued its military operations in Rafah, which first began on May 7th. Rafa is in southern Gaza. A CNN report said that Israeli tanks had been seen in central Rafa. Israel Defense Forces spokesman, rear admiral Daniel Hagari, said that Hamas continues to operate in the region. Hagari said there are still Hamas battalions in Rafa. A couple
Starting point is 00:03:58 days ago, launchers from Rafa fired rockets to Tel Aviv. Millions of people went into bomb shelters. The Biden administration has criticized Israel for conducting the military operations in Gaza and has threatened to withhold supplies for the military effort as long as the operations continue. Housing prices hit a record in March, according to Fox Business. The SNP CoreLogic K-Schrill Index showed on Tuesday that housing prices increased 6.5% nationally in March over the same month last year. Fox Business reported that that's the fastest rate of growth in housing prices since November 2022. Brian Luke is head of commodities, real and digital assets at S&P Dow Jones Indices. According to Fox, he said in a release, this month's report boasts another all-time high.
Starting point is 00:04:52 We've witnessed records repeatedly break in both stock and housing markets over the past year. The index tracks many cities and found that the largest home price gain took place in San Diego. which recorded a year-over-year increase of 11.1%. The Daily Signals Mary Margaret Olihan spent months talking with detransitioners. She wanted to know their stories. She wanted to know why they chose to take puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, or even have surgeries to remove body parts in pursuit of so-called transitioning. And then she wanted to know why they chose to go back to living as their biological sex.
Starting point is 00:05:31 Mary Margaret Olaihan has taken the stories of those individuals that she's book with and compiled them in her brand new book, D-Trans, the stories of escaping the gender identity cult. The book is out today and the author, Mary Margaret Ollahan, joins us now to discuss. Mary Margaret, thanks for being here. Thanks so much for having me. You were on our morning show just a couple weeks ago, so thank you for being back with us today on top news. Explain if you would. Why did you feel the need to write this book? I felt the need to write this book because establishment media ignores these stories.
Starting point is 00:06:06 These are people whose lives have been permanently altered by hormones and surgeries, and they were told by doctors and therapists that these things would cure them, would make them happy, and that was a lie. And I felt that this was important to give an intimate, vulnerable look at these experiences that they have suffered through. Because establishment media won't. And I think that these stories are their greatest weapon against gender ideology, the gender ideology that is harming our kids. Tell us a little bit about the people that are featured in this book. Who are they? What are their stories?
Starting point is 00:06:38 Yeah, so I focus the book mainly on five people, Prisha Mosley, Helena Kirchner, Abel Garcia, Chloe Cole, and Luca Hine. And the book follows each stage of their transition or attempted transition since we know that's impossible. We start with their background, what their families were like, what their social atmosphere was like, go on to how they were first exposed to gender ideology, where they first got hormones, whether they got surgery and what that was like, those very intimate, vulnerable moments leading up to surgery and right after surgery, when they realized that they were regretting the transition and how their experience has been since. And I followed each of these stages with each person together in the same chapters because I think it really helps people to understand what these people went through and how they fell down this slippery slope and ended up where they are today. So my hope is that that makes it a little more readable.
Starting point is 00:07:36 It's not just the stories one by one. And I really hope that the readers can connect with each person because this is their lives and they've each suffered both mentally and physically through every stage. You've spent years reporting on transgenderism and gender ideology. When you actually took the time to sit down and talk with these detransitioners to hear their stories in depth, what was something that you learned that maybe surprised you? I consider myself relatively tough when it comes to reporting on these times of stories. I hear a lot of sad things all the time and you kind of have to be okay with that. I was not prepared for how emotional these stories would be to me. And I had not fully thought through the purpose.
Starting point is 00:08:17 parental side of things. You know, a lot of the time I think conservatives are rightly so, very critical of parents involved in all of this. But I think the parents who have had their children go through this are deserving of empathy, at least the ones who were manipulated by doctors and therapists, because there certainly are parents who are narcissistic and evil and push their kids down this type of path out of a desire to promote themselves. But I think largely what's happening is parents who love their kids are suddenly confronted with gender ideology and their child says, I want to become a boy. They think, okay, I'm going to go to medical professionals who I trust, who will help me.
Starting point is 00:08:56 And those medical professionals lie to them and say, would you rather have a dead daughter or a living son? And so these parents are being betrayed by the medical community. And I think they deserve a lot more empathy from us. And they should be better equipped to handle these types of situations. So that was something that definitely surprised me. Yeah, extremely sobering and extremely powerful. All of these stories are recounted in Mary Margaret's brand new book, D-Trans, The True Stories of Escaping the Gender Ideology Cult. You can order it today.
Starting point is 00:09:26 Pick it up wherever books are sold on Amazon. Mary Margaret, thank you for your work on this for telling the true stories of these individuals who need to have a voice within this space. Thank you. Thank you. The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected Michael Avanotti's appeal. of his conviction for trying to extort $25 million from Nike, the shoe and apparel company. Avenotti is the former lawyer of both Stormy Daniels and Julie Swetnik. Swetnik is a woman who accused Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh of sexual impropriety
Starting point is 00:10:00 when he was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Donald Trump in 2018. According to NBC, Kavanaugh did not take part in the Supreme Court's decision in the Aveni case. In 2021, Avanotti was sentenced to two and a half years in prison. This stemmed from a series of events that began in 2019 when he was representing a youth league basketball coach who said that Nike was making payments to underage athletes. When Avinati met with Nike, he told them not only to pay his client, but to hire him to conduct an internal investigation into the matter for the company. According to the allegations, Avanotti threatened to take the story public. if the company didn't do what he wanted. Abenani has been in other legal trouble in the past.
Starting point is 00:10:46 He was also sentenced to 14 years in prison for cheating clients out of money and four years in prison for stealing money from Stormy Daniels. With that, that's going to do it for today's episode. Thanks for joining us here for the Daily Signal's top news. Be sure to catch the interview conversation tomorrow morning.
